LT1 in a 72 Cutlass

I've got a buddy who has a lt1 he wants to put in his 72 cutlass, the car currently has a 403 olds motor in it. wWe wanted to know what would be needed to mount the motor in the car. ( could we get a set of mounts for a smallblock chevelle maybe?) He also has the tranny (460le?) to go with it. I know this has been done dozens of times in chevy cars but has any one done it to an olds? Also what modifications need to be made to the gas tank in order to update his fuel system? The motor will probably require a decent amount of fuel as it is a supercharged LT-1. Thanks in advance for the help.

a change to a small block motor mount wil be requiered,the motor is the same a small block chevy(reg).it will bolt right in,you will need a computer and fuel system upgrade,an areomotive fuel system will work fine.sumped tank and fuel return lines,the 4l60e should bolt right in,a good non computer is a 200r4.the olds frame is the same a chevelle,so anything for a chevelle will work.

rocketman, Thanks for the reply. Is the part that attaches the motor mount to the frame (not sure what it's called) different on the cutlass than on the Chevelle?

it will work fine the ac comp has to be moved for ac jsut use small chevelle motor mounts...the 4l60e requires some mods to tranny crossmeber and a shorter drive shaft.....wiring is the only other challange if you want ac they sell custom brackets that move the comp

personally id keep it olds powered if it were me fuel inject an olds 350 and put an od behind it it would be cool and fast and make insaine tourqe

The frame brackets from a Chevelle will be different. Usually the frame is drilled for the additional mounts, you just have to move the new bracket around on the frame until it lines up with the holes. You will find that the bracket hangs over the front of the frame a little.

Don't let 'em bug you about that Chevy motor though... I put a Big Block Chevy in mine.

You won't have to move the compressor, just set the right mount to the rear. That is what I did in my 70 Chevelle.

When you get the LT1 out look at the location of the mount on the block. It sets further back than a normal small block. Just set your frame bracket accordingly.
