Try to Google for this information. I was able to get a layout with all the measurements for my a-body, complete front to rear. I don't remember where I found it, only that it came out of a body builders manual from Chevrolet, however, it was found on a website out there somewhere. Good luck.

Any bodyshop that does frame work should have repair manuals with this info in them. Ask if you can get some copies or if they have any old manuals they could part with...

I do... I've got the a '69 frame book at home and a '72 frame book at the shop. Give me a couple days.
Email me at
[email protected] to remind me to scan them in.

I have a subframe sitting in my garage right now. I will try and remember to measure it. If I remember right, the rear mounts are 34 or 34-1/2" apart center-to-center.

For a fast reply, why don't you call Gary Martz at Martz chassis. I am sure that he knows the dimensions off the top of his head. 814-623-9501.

Funny how many questions I can answering after reading Dave's website. Definitely a plethora of relevant info there!

Matt,
I am not sure. I think I got that from an old thread over at Camaros.net. The search function is my friend. I hope it was able to help you out over at Art's. It is one of the best I have seen for a first gen.

Check over at nastyZ28.com I understand the frames changed in 75 due to the cat converter. (I don;t know what year you have)

Yeah, that image is great, and I can see what looks to be a Chevelle on the next page. I'd love to get my hands on that book, and it'd really help to get some pre-installed body mounts squared away!

Great page! Does any one have the second page to get the measurements of the lowercase letters....(measurements from floor to bottom of framerails...

Here's a couple I scanned a while ago:
'64-67 Chevelle frame (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/data/516/medium/66-frame.jpg)
'68-72 Chevelle frame (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/framedims.jpg)
I haven't scanned the Camaro pages yet, but I do have them both at home sitting by the computer waiting for me to take the time to scan.
I have '66, '69, and '72 at home, and have access to a bunch of them into the 80s & 90s. They list all the american-built passenger-cars for the year the book was produced.
I can scan other makes, models, & years, but I don't want to spend too much time doing it, now that my chevelle project deadline is approaching rapidly.

Thanks Derek, but I already have those. The one above was nice because it showed dimesions from a vertical datum.
We've got all those dating back to the early '50s (maybe earlier), if you need something...

Ok, our first post after a few months of lurking...
Are these scans from different books, and do you have the titles of the books. I assume they are bodyshop manuals of some sort. Are these types of things available readily or is this something you find on ebay or the swap meet???
We are working on a rear suspension for the vintage cars( Mustang/Cougar Firebird/Camaro) and need to know how similar the various years and models are. We are more or less Mustang people, so we need some input on the GM vehicles.
For instance, we know on the 65-73 mustangs the crosscar dimension of the rear frame rails is the same, as is the case for the Cougars of that vintage. When it comes to the GM vehicles we do not have the slightest idea (well we have a slight idea) of what models/years are the same.
Can anyone tell me where I can get these books or give us a generalization on the Model/Year similarities?
Thanks...Mike

These scans are from books my dad got when a local body-shop closed that had been in business for many years... I don't know if you can find them anywhere anymore.
Maybe you could search ebay for "Tru-Way" frame books to find old copies. Each scan was out of a different year's book, so you would need to buy a book for each different year you wanted to compare.
I can scan any american car from '66, 69, or 72 if you need... I'd have to look to see what other years I have access to.

So each book is dated by year and contains all the frames??? I will do the search now.
If you could get scans of Mustang, Cougar, Camaro and Firebird that would be a great start, for each of those years.
In general, what are the most popular GM vehicles people tend to upgrade their suspensions on?
Was the Chevelle the same as the Camaro or was that a full frame.
Thanks....Mike

Mike - all of the GM RWD intermediates are body on frame construction. For MY 1978 this chassis was downsized slightly (shorter wheelbase, about 500# lighter total car weights).
Welcome aboard.

When I was doing my frame I saw different prints and manual dimensions that just weren't enough. I went to a collision shop that did electronic computer scanning for alignment of everything on the car. They gave me a print out that gave every factory locating hole, suspension mounting points and other nut and bolt reference points. It still took a bit of algebra to change the wheel base dimensions from the print but it made it so easy to make sure that the suspension mounting points were at the right height and in the right plane. I actuallly had to use the dimensions that you see below and also get the dimensions for the 85 Corvette that I installed the suspension from. It didn't even cost me to get them, they just said to bring the car in when done so they could see it.

I don't quite understand how to use that data.
On the image above:
The 56 5/8 line that goes from the aft DS side of the front sub to the fwd PS side of the rear sub. Are you to measure to the hole in the frame that those curved lines bisect, or does that curved line represent some theoretical point in space?

it goes to the edge of the hole..

Just to be certain.
Not from the center of the hole?

BTW, that's a bottom-view, so that's pass side front and drivers side rear.
