      rotors......

i am looking for some replacements for my stock rotors .. but want something a lil lighter than what comes factory ....
has anyone come across such a thing .maybe some cross drilled slotted rotors.... how about some aluminum rotors.. is there such a thing ?
tell me what you guys are using or where to get something of the such....
      thanks .

      Rich,

What make / model car? What brake setup? You might look into a two piece rotor for weight savings. Going with a cross drillled rotor will save some weight, but the savings will probably be less than .5lb over a solid rotor, all things the same.

check out musclemotorports.com, they sell used nascar stuff, you could go to a 2 piece rotor and hat set up if you knew the offset you wanted to use and figured out your caliper mounting. lots of rotors and hats on ebay also.

      Rich,

I need to ask why you want lighter rotors? Is it to reduce unsprung mass, cooling or looks?

Steel rotor with an Al hat. Search for drilled rotors and you will find they are for cosmetic purpose only and that the contribute nothing to performance. Slotted rotors may have some advantages. If you want to stop better, a larger diameter and thickness rotor will do wonders. A two or more piston caliper will always help.

IMO 2pce will accomplish both your needs. Since 1 plate side of the rotor is no longer attached as 1 pce you gain the consistency of 2 plates cooling at the same rate, thus longer lasting and less likely hood of dealing with warped rotors later down the road. Also the Alum. hat section of the rotor will likely remove around 1.75-2.5lbs of material.

Now the expensive part.....to use a 2 pce rotor you'll have to come up with some hubs. To keep the weight down you'll need to go aluminum and place the rotor over the top of the hubs. 2 things happen that you should know about when you do this though, first expect a small track width change, second you'll need to relocate the caliper to re-center over the rotor (sure with worn down pads you may get away with it. You'll find problems if you don't re-center when you go to install new pads and the offset change (of the new rotor/hat combo) does not allow room for the OEM "floating" style caliper to re-center themselves because of the "new" pads).
