Offset?

Could somebody explain wheel offset to me. I thought it was the deviation from center. Such as an 8" wheel with no offset would have 4" backspacing. Recently at Disco Tire, they told me that the 8" wheel I was looking at had zero offset and 4.5" backspacing. Now I am confused.

You are correct in both accounts. Confused even more? Wheel width is measured from the tire bead surface to tire bead surface. Backspacing is measured from the wheel lip which happens to be around .5" out from the bead surface. That is where the extra bit comes from.

Wow, I didn't know that. Good thing somone brought that up since I'll be doing all my BS/offset measurements over spring break.
