I'm running the original stock controls in my El Camino.

There is no vacuum going to the heater hose valve and I assume not the recirculation flap neither. This makes the air coming out of the vents not as cold as I'd like.

I've confirmed that there's vacuum going to the vacuum switch thing attached to the controls but haven't pulled the controls out yet to take a closer look... if the vacuum-switch-thing has failed, what do people do about that? I can't find that it's being reproduced and I don't think I'd be surprised if it has failed after 55 years.

You probably just have a bad vacuum hose. I bought a vacuum hose kit on eBay that had the correct color striping to replace my 50-year old hoses. I'm not familiar with the Elco AC controls, but if it's similar to my '72 Olds 442, I just sprayed a few drops of silicone lubricant into each of the ports and rotated the controller a few times to distribute the lubricant; works like a charm. Here's 2 pics of the vacuum controller from my Olds before restoring it.
