Happy new year everyone. So my nephew has a 2016 Camaro SS and blew his cylinder head and oil pan and possibly need to replace the lifters? Engine is an LT1 6.2 with 24K miles on it. He's willing to give it to me, however it's in a shop (norcal) having a new engine installed. I have a 68 Camaro project and was wondering if this is worth rebuilding. Shop wants to charge $700 for the core fee and not sure if this is typical charge. Would really appreciate your take on this.

I'd call a few salvage yards to get takeout prices, then call a couple of your local engine rebuiders for a price, and ask what their core charge is. But, I'd have to wonder what else might be wrong with it if a head failure also damaged the oil pan since the block is between them.

Thank you for your reply. I’m wondering about that too. My nephew is giving me the engine but don’t know as to what extent is the damage. I’ll go check it out this Sunday.

If the head and oil pan are "blown" then you can probably expect the engine to be scrap. Most aftermarket rebuild companies charge a core fee if you don't return exactly what they sent you. Being it's an engine in demand the core charge is probably higher. Stating that, your nephew may be stuck with the core charge himself if the engine isn't rebuildable.
