Hello gang! Bought my Chevelle back in 2019 and finally got it in my garage and have been buying parts left and right. Just wanted to post some pics as I start this build process, make it a great driver, while keeping the exterior still looking like junk until i can afford to do all the paint and bodywork after dumping my cash fund on motor, trans, rear diff, front and rear suspension, new core support, vintage air, wilwood's with hydroboost, and a ton of **** to throw at this junk. Excited to dive into this ride over the next, lord know how many years, lol.
Thanks,
Tony

First thing was digging this car out of my buddies shop and installing a 12 bolt with 4.11's with a hotchkis boxed control arms so we could get this ride on my trailer. The drive back to AZ from Northern California took 14 hours with my 5 year old and 2 year old boys. Finally got the car off the trailer with some help from my buddies. Rolled the 383ci full roller making 515hp in the garage that will eventually be mounted to a 700r4 that was built to withstand the power (fingers crossed). Installed my Vintage Air front runner. I then proceeded to tear down the front end to see how bad it was beyond the rough exterior. looks way worse than it is, nothing some wire brushes can't handle. Started a nice junk pile, coming soon to my local goodguys. Eventually i want to take the frame off and paint it, but for the time being i am only focusing on the front end which is the only place with surface rust on the frame due to a degreasing that stripped everything in the engine compartment back in 2007. Forgot to mention the last time this ride drove was in 2005. I thought the interior would have been worse than it was, but it is all surface rust too, even in the floor pans. Going to POR15 under the dash area after knocking most of the rust off. As i continue with more progress, i will keep adding pictures.
Thanks gang!
Tony

Since it’s been a waiting game for a lot of things to come in, I went a head and installed my vintage air evap after cleaning up the interior firewall.

Just dropped my 500hp 383ci stroker in, paired up to a built 700R4.

Swapped out the sweeping Malibu dash for a SS repo dash with Dakota Digital HDX. Went with the Painless Wiring set up pre cut for a 70-72 Chevelle. Seems like most people go AAW, but I like how painless set their stuff up.208967

Threw in the dash today and will start working on installing a center console soon.

Finally was able to spend some time in the garage today so I assembled and installed my shifter and center console. Getting ahead of myself with interior before I lay down some sound deadener and carpet, but this needs to be landed before I can get any of that started.

Been waiting forever on springs and a new steering rack for the chevelle, finally came in and I was able to assemble the front suspension and brakes on this old beater.

Very cool build! If you are interested, I have a 68-72 Chevelle 12 bolt that I pulled from my 70 GTO. PM me if you are interested and I can give you some more details.

Looks awesome. How did the Vintage Air install go? Thinking about doing that one myself as well. I'm a little scared of the size of the install. Some have said 20 hours plus. It's easier with a stripped car im sure but would love you opinion on it.

I have a 12 bolt with 4:10’s and strange axles already, but I do appreciate the heads up!! Thanks brother.

It’s been pretty smooth so far. All the under the dash stuff was simple to follow on the instructions, its just a matter of planning your plumbing properly. Wiring is cake too, but I’m sure it will get interesting once I get my core support back together and radiator installed. Also, vintage air has a great YouTube video showing the passenger compartment install on one video, and everything under the hood in another video. They did a great job of making it easy. Also, they just released the gen V vintage air, mine is the IV, makes me wish I waited for it, but I’m sure it will work great either way.

Looking good. Thats a clean body to start with.

Been a few weeks since my last post, but I’ve been getting some things done. Landed my radiator shroud, mounted inner and outer fenders, wired entire engine bay, routed my vintage air AC lines and condenser, landed fan relays to harness bulkhead, installed MSD6AL, reset distributor to TDC, replaced all body mounts, cleaned out the trunk and prepped for paint. The motor is ready to turn over, but the 1 7/8 headers I ordered have been pushed back for a 4th time. Should see those around 2/1/2024, hopefully. All that is left to tackle is installing my EFI tank, routing the fuel lines, and finding a place to mount my aeromotive fuel pressure regulator. I am still going to pull the rear diff and clean it up since the guy who built it didn’t have time to clean and paint it, but only charged me $400 to rebuild it so I’m not complaining.

Almost forgot, set up my POL hydrobooster. I did order new fenders since the originals have a lot of Bondo, rust holes, and are a little twisted.

Finally received up my rear brakes from Wilwood, so I pulled the rear end, cleaned it up, painted it with some Eastwood paint, wire wheeled the back half of the car and frame, and painted the underside as well. Installed the wilwoods, and they look huge on this 12 bolt.

70Junk, do you happen to have the part numbers on the wilwood brakes you used on the front/rear. I am in a similiar situation with my 69 cutlass (updating brakes/suspension/redo factory AC). Any info would be appreciated.

the rear brakes you have to measure your axle offset which is the distance from the axle face to the face of the housing where the brake mounts to it. The front are pretty strait forward. My rear offset was 2.75 on my 12 bolt.

if you need anything, let me know. The only parts I haven’t replaced on this car is the body and frame.

Got the rear end finished and back in the car. Threw on my rear sway bar. Then my rims from Weld came. Still need tires. Don’t mine the door gap, rebuilding the hinges this week.

Ran brake lines to the rear, mounted my new wheels, and put the car back on the ground after 5 months in the air. Still have some ways to go before it’s driving. Also probably have to lower the rear about 2-4”.

It is amazing how much better a car can look with new wheels!

Been a while since I posted much. I rebuilt the door hinges and got the driver door lined up perfect and swinging as it should again. I started to sand and prime the car to rattle can it black until I can afford an actual paint job. I also bought new fenders and hood and had them powder coated. Found a little rust once I removed the front windshield, but I’ll probably just treat it and send it. Still waiting on headers to be built by American Racing Headers. Hopefully once I get those bad boys, she’ll be ready to be fired up!!

Making some progress on the paint, just wet sanding to get rid of the fish eyes and trash. Keeping it one stage paint until it’s time to replace quarters and paint this thing for real.

Been away from the keyboard all summer long and out of the garage for the most part, 5 month of 100+ was too much. I did manage to finally run my fuel system. Got a Tanks Inc EFI tank with a big in tank fuel pump, aeromotive filter and fuel pressure regulator. Since I’m running a carb on this bad boy I’ve got a low pressure spring in on my return style system. Got the trunk coated, 1 7/8’s American racing headers that bolted in nice and easy with some minor modifications, hood is on, front end is assembled, finally threw on the front bumper. Just need to finish wiring my relay for the fuel pump and I should be ready to turn the key on this bad boy. Also cleared off the 55 years of dirt, grime, and grease that’s accumulated under the passenger compartment. Next step is rubberized coating, installing the drive shaft, and 3” stainless exhaust. Hoping to have a driving car by next month. Still need interior, but at least she will drive.

Looks nice, but the wire from the coil to the distributor is too short. When you hit the throttle the engine will twist clockwise when standing to the front and that will pull that wire tighter.

While I agree, it's on the short side, your reasoning is backwards.

Bugger. You're right. Crank spins clockwise, block tries to go counterclockwise. It's been a while since I've handled a cable throttle and my memory has never been great to begin with.

What are the details on the tires front and rear? Looks like 18s? what tire size?

That picture is before I buttoned it down. I was just testing mounting spots.

front tires are 255/45/18
Rear tires are 295/45/18
i could have gone with a 305 but when I purchased these rims they only had it in a 9.5 with the backspacing for the chevelle.
