I have 1.5 inches from the frame & 1 1/8 from the fender but it's not rolled so if the tire hit the fender than I can still roll the lip.

If it does not rub than that is acceptable clearance!

Sorry I could not resist...seriously though this is a tough question to answer because of all the variables involved. But I will say that on my mustang I have about a 1/4" clearance from the tire to leaf spring and about a 1/2" from the tire to fender...it is very tight and I may be raising it up in the near future.

There are a couple places I have mabey 1/4" at the most for clearance on my car and it doesnt rub. Unless I pull into a really angled driveway. But on a road course or regular driving it does not rub.

As a rule we use 1/2" all the way around and have not had any trouble. The tooling we built for measuring backspacing allows us to get pretty darn close to where the actual tires will be when inflated (side bulge) and mounted.
