I have been working on a project at work that kids will be able to write on, and the pen and handle are setup for right handed people. And of the four people that are working on it three of us are left handed. So, we all get together an gripe about how the world is against left handed people. I just wondered how many people here are left or right handed, or both like I am. I write left handed and I do most everything else right handed. But I can play most sports either left or right. Any at work I change my mouse from left to right every few months to keep my mouse hand from getting worn out.

Right handed, but left eye dominant.

PITA for when I used to shoot in competitions.

Right Handed---my left hand is nearly useless. Being ambidextrous would come in real handy while working construction, on cars, or any sort of labor, really.

Right handed... know why? Because I'm a woman and we're ALWAYS right. RIGHT?

I know what you mean. My buddy has the same situation.

I am truly a righty but can use my left when needed for tough bolts/tight places. Then again there are just those times my hands are too big regardless of orientation.

I'm right handed, but can weld using my left hand as the dominant hand...dunno if that would count as ambidextrous.

I'm left-handed, though I am able to work on things with either hand. I just can't write with my right hand.

Lefty. Bat and throw right side. Hammer left. Darts either. Shoot pistols, either. Hit car when made at it, either.

Right handed. Fish with a left handed baitcaster. Drive with my left hand.

Armwrestling? Usually only win with my left hand. ??? I guess I am just weird!

Right handed. But, I can do anything with my left hand that I can do with my right provided I cannot see my left hand. For instance, reaching into some deep dark blind section of an engine compartment with my left hand to do something very precise is not a problem but I can't dial a phone with my left hand because I can see it.

LOL, All my life I thought I was the only weird one. I write righthanded, but play ball, golf and most everything else lefthanded. I am a carpenter by trade and use either hand to hammer. However, here is the weird part. My brother is absolutely opposite from me. He writes left handed but everything else is done with his right hand. I thought we were the only ones in the world like that.
Anyway, I did not vote cause I was not sure how to.LOL

I write and eat lefty and do most of my mechanical work with my left hand. However, I can use my right hand to get into tight places (exhaust work, sparkplugs, etc.) while working on the car, like True mentioned. It wasn't that difficult to adapt because I've been playing the trumpet for 20 years. It's a right-handed instrument.

Im right handed. but can work on my car with both.

You guys talking about using your opposite hands for things was making me laugh thinking about in "Gone in 60 seconds" in the begining when the guy is talking about sitting on his left hand till it goes numb and then calling it the STRANGER!

I'm right handed, but I can do many things with my left. Stranger included. But that's not the point here, now is it?

I used to be all lefty until I became a powerlifting bodybuilder in my 20's (nowhere close to that power/strength now). My right hand caught up over the years, and coupled with the fact that I was also a fitter and a carpenter during those years my right hand got to within 90% of my left hand's capabilities. I can now right with my right hand if I have to, but rarely do.

While most of my life has shown me time and again how the righty's have the advantages, I have found some for us lefty's as well.
1) Driving - I am able to shift with my right, while my more precise/strong hand stays on the steering wheel, which of course is the more important function.
2) Bowling - I studied the 'science' of bowling in my early-20's and learned that in the later stages of a competition, the lefty's have a distinct advantage in that our side of the lane is far less used, therefore it has a more consistent oil layer, resulting in more consistent ability to control the precision required for scoring.
3) Golf - I have also noticed that many holes are set up to punish the more common right-handed golfer. When timing is off, a righty will either hit it short and right, or long and left. A lot of trouble has been designed into holes to take advantage of this. Not all holes resemble this, but I have had poor timing at times and my bad shots find more rough than sand, as opposed to my right-handed friends. Next time you golf, check the placement of hazards around the green, it may surprise you.
4) Probably many others that I missed...

I won't go into the disadvantages, they are too numerous to list here. But we all learn to cope, and at my age everything has evened out. I will say that learing to use my right hand more has increased my overall effectiveness at whatever I choose to do.

I am right handed but I can do quite a bit with my left hand too especially on cars. When you grow up never asking for help on cars you learn to use both hands for everything. Sometimes I have 3 or 4 hands but they arent on the list.

Left handed, I do everything left-handed except manipulate a computer mouse. I tell you it looks strange to me to see people using their right hand to do things like write, open doors, throw things, use tools. Freaky! It took my dad years to teach me how to loosen and tighten nuts and bolts, I would always go the wrong way. I still have to think about it sometimes. Haha!

Naturally left handed, but I was forced to use my right hand in kindergarten, so now I have learned to do most things right handed.
I can use either hand for most things now.

My guess would be that there would be a disproportionate (sp)
amount of lefties that are in "creative" type careers and hobbies.
Left handed/right side of brain and vice versa. The right side of our brains being the more creative side if you will.
I saw in an earlier post on this thread that Kris Horton is a lefty.
That would have been my guess.
On the other hand us right handers are much more rational and logical in our thinking :poke:

I remember playing baseball right-handed the first year (6 years old), with the coach telling my mom that something was wrong with how I caught and threw. He finally told her that I might be left-handed, and sure enough, my abilities quickly grew. We laughed about that for years!

Actually what I have found here at my work is the opposite. Of the lefties that we have found most of them are in Engineering. Only one is in design. And our group here where I work it is split between Engineering and Design/Marketing folks. Out of about 35 Engineers we have 7 lefties and out of 30 Designers we had 1. Very informal, but interesting.

And being semi-ambidextrous is very handy. I basically can do anything with my non-dominant about 90% as well as I can with the dominant hand. And with a little pratice I can use either hand equally.

I had a similar problem when I was in Elementry School. Back then the teachers used to make you use your right hand. So I had alot of trouble in school until my parents found out what was going on. The only reason I found out about this was, My son is a lefty also and the teachers had no idea. I went and spent the day with him in class and saw for my self why he had trouble cutting and writing and other simple skills. The teachers never even thought to try the left handed approach. How many left handed people have children that are left handed?

That's an interesting question! My wife and I are both left handed, but my son (he's 2 1/2) seems like he might be right-handed. When he eats, he changes back and forth.

Meanwhile, my brother and sister-in-law are both right handed, and their 4-year old daugher is almost definitely left-handed. Wierd, eh?

can you gain a stroke when you change hands?

I found that when I was learning to weld that you can't always get into certain positions with your right hand to do it. Tanks and walls along with things like roll cages just don't let the right hand in sometimes. I can weld better with my left hand than my right. The welds done with my left always look slightly better than the ones done with the left. My right hand evidently shakes a bit and my left is as steady as can be. You can't see it visibly while I am welding but it shows up in the weld.

Go Figure
