View Full Version : 3rd Brake Light anyone?

Was just thinking of possibly adding a 3rd brake light to my 67, for safety/visual awareness reasons.

I know I've seen them integrated into the rear spoiler, but not looking to do any body mods. I've also seen the rear package tray set up with speaker mounts. Not really a fan of that. Feel like it looks cheap and the light is too small.

I did a quick google and found some people using LED light strips to add that feature to their newer cars, the full length brake light either on top or the bottom of the rear window.

Whats your take on this? Anyone done this? Care to share your thoughts?

Thanks!

Ebay is filled with universal versions of what you're proposing. I picked up a 12" LED strip and plan to integrate it onto the rear window or modify the roof liner but unfortunately I'm just not there yet.

Yeah I was just looking for some examples.

ULTM8Z, looks good and clean! Maybe I'll look at an OEM solution.

I was afraid of the full width strip looking too ricer or tunerish...

If you can't find a factory part from a different car you like, these are pretty basic and look OEM.

you also have to get the module that keeps the brake light from blinking with the turn signals.

I'm having a hard time getting something that doesn't take away from the classic aesthetics at the same time. I agree some improvements are needed, and they are safer, but I want to retain my classic car look.

I've thought about adding a flasher setup to my tail lights to pulse them 3x quickly before going solid. Not uncommon on motorcycles.

I hate this feature. I'm noticing some new cars have flashing 3rd brake lights and I can't stand it.

I installed these upgraded bulbs in totally stock housings and the output is incredible. Not spotty or pink like other cheap LED bulbs, these are legit. They are also "instant on" so people behind you know sooner that you're braking.

As for mounting a 3rd brake light, my windows have medium tint so I'm not too worried about it standing out. But I know what you mean from an aesthetic perspective.

But the flashing 3rd light gets your attention which is exactly the point.

I understand the point, and agree that it works to draw attention. It's also very annoying.

Imagine being stuck in stop and go traffic at night and every car in front of you has the center light flash rapidly each time the brakes are applied. Ugh.

What module is used to keep the 3rd brake light from flashing? I know that it can be done with 2 relays, but is there a simpler way?

What year Mustang is that 3rd brake light from?

Look at trailer supply places. They sell modules for adding a 3rd brake light. Supposedly they don't work with LEDs but I don't see why not. Another option is to run a wire from the brake light switch. That's how the aftermarket harnesses add the circuit.

I kind of like the idea of the 3rd brake light in sync with the turn signal. Would grab someone's attention even more when make a turn, than just coming on solid.

Mine, made by Hella, is LED and has an angle adjustment. It is not really noticeable and is not in my rear view mirror line of sight. With the tinted glass I have now it will all but disappear in day light. It is very bright. You splice into the wire between the brake switch and the column. Looks off center in the top picture, just an illusion based on the angle the picture was taken from.

Three different versions available depending on the angle of your back glass. You can mount it high like I did or down on the package tray.
Pictures about 3/4 the way down his product page, I also have the 7" Cibie H4 housings he sells with 85/80W Osram bulbs: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/products/products.html
