View Full Version : Project 70 cougar ( Bullit )

Hi all ,
Starting this thread to share the build and updates of my cougar. ( project named Bullit )
Most of the idea's are worked out already in my mind, just getting it done in real life now.
Going for a fast engine, not sure about automatic or manual ( leaning more to the manual),
Coilover suspension in the back ,decent brakes ( wilwood ), racing seats and some custom stuff in the interior ( dashboard and center console) ,
Making it more modern with some 'gadgets'.
Headlights will be electrical (no more vacuum system).
Maybe go for a fuel cap as seen on a charger ( in that style)....
Backseat might be removed to create a sort of mustang fastback style interior in the back ( make something to put away a fire extinguisher and spare tire maybe....)
Paint is most likely going to be a wrap ( leaning towards dark carbon wrap)
Black rims and most of the chrome is going to be black to ( want it to look really 'dark')
And plenty other things....just to give you all an idea about whats going to happen.
Below a some pictures of the car at this moment.
Front has already been rebuild for the most part.
While rebuilding the front

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/04/UKDexpJ-1.jpg
So my intention was to just fix the front, clean it up and then place the original engine back into it.
But once the front was all cleaned up and the suspension was under there i was like, this is way to nice compared to the rear and rest of the floor ....
So i thought, might just do it all the right way now and thats when my project became a pro-touring project....
So what you see above has been done over the last few weeks.
over the last days i removed the transmission and rear axle and started cleaning up the whole floor and chassis ( still doing the cleanup => pain in the ass job).

The rusted parts in the front ( steering box etc are getting replaced)
just waiting for the new ones to arrive.
Untill the next update !!

At least you are just cleaning the floors and not replacing them! I had to replace pieces and clean, blah, sucks just like you said!! Looks like a great start for a project.

This car is amazing, besides a few minor spots or rust (surface rust) there is no work on the platework.
No welding or whatever has been done on this car, all i see when cleaning the floors is a floor in a very good condition.
Only thing i have welded were reinforcement plates in the shocktowers as a precaution for the heavy stress its going to go through.

This is my daily driver . I have a Big Block Ford . The other day I left a new corvette (2017) at two lights . Get a 460 , and yes , there is aluminum blocks that are liter then a new ls (after you bore and stroke them) . Math is math , you need air and fuel at a certain amount to have a certain hp . If want a little more power of a mild modified street 460 , then get a full race prepped lsx with twin turbos .

After allot of work on cleaning up the floor untill it was all bare metal,
i finally got it done and put a nice new layer on it!
The engine bay is semigloss black and the rest of the floor has been done with some sort of antigravel coating (fine coating though).
Pictures are not the best ,looks really neat in real life!
Happy with the result.
Now i am just waiting for some parts to arrive so i can install the new suspension in the rear and put it back together,
Currently pulled the axles and gears out, waiting for new parts for that aswell,
Will use the original 9inch axle housing ,so will give that some cleaning and paintjob this week.

Not so many things to share,
Been working on the inside ,cleaning everything up and started working on the wiring.
Also have been building a custom plate to place over the rear lights ( dark see through plate ) which will give it a more modern look.
Also decided to close of the side lights on the fenders and in the back also to give it more smooth look.
Pictures one of these days....
latest update see this :
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/05/DVV3Crg-1.jpg
Complete rearend from moser, Truetrac 3.70 gears , 31 spline axles and wilwood disc brake kit.
Company that provides my shipping and import to my country forgot my rear suspension...
so that is still in the States , and aslong as i dont have that i cannot install the rearend....this will take another 5 weeks now...pretty annoyed by it
but i got plenty of other things to do so i will focus on that.
Normally over the coming weeks all parts should be coming in and regular updates will follow.
Cheers !

Small stuff over the past weeks
Made a template for the plate i am going to place over the lights in the back.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/05/EM5S2i8-1.jpg
In the middle a black mustang fuel cap from scott drake will be placed.
Removed the drip rail today, still need to work on it for a smooth transition, but i already love the look on the car without them!
(i know, what if it rains.....extra safety not to drive the car in bad weather and make sure it makes another 50 year! )
Also been messing around with a tire to see what size i would like , this one is to big but gives me a general idea (probably go for an 18 inch ,rest of sizing still not sure)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/05/TKR8tRJ-1.jpg
Also have been cleaning up the inside as you can see in this picture.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/05/n8B3Tu5-1.jpg
Finally received my door handles, will try to install them this week but more likely next..
these come from a fiat barchetta from the 90's.
Cheap but almost looks like hidden door handles ,except from the push button.
This is going to create a very smooth look.
(combine this with the removed drip rails and closed of sidelights, hell yeah!!)

Been working allot on the inside of the car, cleaning the floor, painting the brake pedal etc...
Then also allot of work on the body, fixing some little dents which is still a work in progress.
Last thing i have done lately is installing my new door handles,
Made a bracket for them, welded them in place from the inside, then started finishing it up from the outside.
Took a long time making it clean as it is now,
All i need to do now is give the door knob and handle a nice color but that's a finishing touch.
Next up, connect the door mechanism to the door handle.
(not to difficult)

As soon as i get my parts here i can show some more progress....
New coilover suspension was lost during transport ....they finally recovered it so should be here any week now.
rest of parts is also a pile of ****....been waiting almost 3 months now, unbelievable!!

Very long time since i posted stuff about my car, did some work over the last months, not as much as i wanted but that's life :).
Scraped the floor under the car to bare metal and put a new coating on it.
Installed a new electrical heater system under the dash.
Finished my rearend install and disc brakes.
Almost finished the cover i made for the rearlights,
Installed my fuel pump and lines almost completely.
Finishing up on the new wiring.
Installed an electric headlight kit to open the covers and allot of other small details.
Pictures will follow in my next posts.

Need so finish some small details and then its done.
Tested a few lights yesterday and it looks good!

In my build I just went with an 98 Explorer 8.8 with 31 splines, 3.73s , and a traclok . I originally planned on going with a Moser built rear end but it would have been overkill . But seeing that you're in Germany it would be hard to come up with an Explorer piece . Nice build.

Keeping it oldschool :).
408 with carburator, TKO600.
Engine just got tested on the dyno, 450 peak hp and 500 peak torque.
Should arrive end of this week or next week.
Thanks for the compliment

Hey cool! I had a forged 408 made out of my 351w block and chose a TKO600 too! I'm doing FI though. Looks like you'll be up and running a little ahead of me so I'm very eager to hear your feedback on the combo.
And nice work overall by the way.

Impressed by your front suspension!

No worries, All the same in pricing to get stuff here.
Everything i buy from the states you have to add 33% extra on top of the sum you pay to the store...( import and extra taxes)
So if i build a 50.000$ car it will cost me 68.000$...
Retard laws around here..

Engine arrived here last week,
gonna drop it in next week most likely.
Few questions though...i have no idea where to connect the water temp sensor and the oil pressure sensor...
Where do you normally connect these ??
I just found out i do not have a full picture of my engine, great :D
Will make one soon!
see allot of 'holes' in the engine, not sure if it goes somewhere there?
Some of them are open and some of them are closed of with a bolt.

Found some time again, such an important thing, time...
Installed the engine and the transmission over the last days.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2019/04/qz0vFo1-1.jpg
Offcourse not without some issues, electrical fan does not fit now so will need to make some adjustments.
Had to do some cutting for the tko but all went well.
Just doing the wiring now.
Will hopefully fire it up in the coming weeks if i find more time....
Got an issue with the wiring though, bought a standard kit from speedway motors, really happy with it.
But i also have a new msd ignition box.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2019/04/T22xIPN-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2019/04/TezC5Hr-1.jpg
So this pink wire is the ignition feed in the cable boom.
But when installing my msd box which i bought separate and has nothing to do with the new cable boom,
the msd instruction say connect the red wire directly to the battery and the black also ( + and - ).
Since this msd box is in control of the ignition and gets a feed from the battery,
what do i do with the pink cable from the cable boom???

I bet money that pink wire is a resistance wire that is meant to power the coil. Strip the insulation and I bet the conductor inside is very thin. This is done to protect the coil from full 12 volts, when used in an original installation.

Sure is a nice kit!
Only its a basic and for a cougar its a bit tricky to make it all work with the sequential tail lights.
And still figure out what to do with that pink cable...how to make it work with the MSD box, getting there though...

Spacing issues with the electrical fan.
Any idea's how to solve this?
Its a 3row radiator and as you can see i only have a around 5mm of extra space i can put it to the front, so that is not enough to clear the fan from the pulley.
In the picture the fan is next to the pulley but in reality it should be in front of it...
Cutting and welding is not an option to make it fit because it means i have to cut through the support frame of the car.
Only option i would see directly is putting the fan on the other side of the radiator and then reverse the rotation of the fan?
But i do not know if that is a good idea?....

This is how the fan/fan bracket sits when looking at the other pictures...should be centered

Some small updates, electrical system is almost completed, just need to fix the wiper washer motor en the power windows.
Once that is done, going to start on the interior, still waiting for parts...
Just a quick peak of the new wheels which i just fitted, bought them really cheap on a sale.
Wheels are from jegs, 17x8 size, tires are bridgestones 215/40/17 front, 225/45/17 rear
Should have gone with a 17X9 in the back to make it fit perfectly, but was not sure...will probably buy that size later on, still like the look!
Hard to get a picture from the side with all the tools behind me etc..

Did some fabricating on the instrument panel, gauges are from new vintage usa, really pleased by them.
Look modern but still simple like it was back then...
Panel has some tape around it because its a first try, will finish the real one with a chrome molding around the plate
Offcourse you will only see the panel where the screws are, rest is going to be surrounded by the dashboard.

Indicator are not from new vintage
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2019/06/pfY8wfh-1.jpg
Also installed a modern radio below the switches, not that clear in this picture.
But just to give you an idea, gauges are red light, switches are red lights and the radio to, like those red lights, pretty pimp!

I'm pretty sure you could have gone with wider tires. I wish there was more, concrete, fitment guidelines for Cougars. I have 225/55-16s on my Cougar now and I can for sure go wider in the back and maybe in the front as well.

I hear that, not at all simple to get information on a cougar when it comes to putting non standard stuff on it....just not a big protouring fanbase on this car it seems...
As said for the wheels/tires, will go bigger next year most likely....still liking the look.
Gonna focus on getting this thing out for a test drive in a few weeks, just need to measure the lenght for the driveshaft and order it, delivery will take a few weeks...

Long time overdue...jobs abroad keep this thing from getting finished.
Some small updates though.
Interior is almost finished from the upholstery shop.
Door panels will be finished somewhere next month.
Dashboard and rear seats are done.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/03/Y5xuFLm-1.jpg
Will take a better picture later from the dashboard
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/03/rpAAl6F-1.jpg
Just need to make a bracket for the front seats now and the interior can be installed.
Was planning on making a custom center console but just found the original back and
will use this one, just get in upholstered again with some custom touch to it.

Electrical is almost finished, just need to connect the horn and the temperature sensor.

Front panels are finished, back panels will be done next month.
This was the sketch we came up with:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/03/TRaIJ49-1.jpg
This was during the construction
Bought this flat panels and frames "new" from west coast classic cougar and the guy from upholstery is using his magic to give it some form
(Sold the old panels for 500dollars, some stuff for a cougar is rare and expensive!)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/03/qEgCm0P-1.jpg
And this is the result, guy has a crappy camera so you don't really see the details at the moment...just blurry black and brown...but you get an idea this way
Will get them next week and get a decent picture.
Need to paint the door handle black in my opinion now...

Most things are working but struggling with the engine, running rough at idle...
and currently not enough buildup of pressure on the throwout bearing from the transmission.
When bleeding no air comes out but need to get the pedal completely to the end to get it in first and that is a struggle...
Going in reverse is not working, just cracking sounds when pedal is pressed down completely.
Not sure what is wrong there but will start a different topic on that.

That is looking really good. What size speakers are you using in the front doors?

Currently nothing since the ones i had will not fit anymore...
Need to find something small but powerfull that will fit in that speaker hole..
Thanks for the compliment!

I moved the radiator forward by making the opening bigger.. some people just lean it forward.. i ended building a custom radiator support.173786173787

I'm thinking of doing the same thing. Did you fab the entire fender support panel or just blend in a shock tower eliminator panel?

I fabbed the whole thing.. just cutting the support made it too weak for my taste.. I used heavier gauge sheet metal when I made the new one.

Small update on the interior.
Door panels in the front are finished and installed,
waiting for the rear panels and center console.
Under the dashboard will be finished with brown leather.
Console will be brown leather too.
Quick fit to see if it fits, still need to install the weatherline strips, install the door handle properly, and install the speakers.
Afterwards details such as trimming the carpet nicely around the sides etc...

That interior looks great!
Thanks, appreciate it.
Really happy with the result, dashboard frame has been reused, seats are from Braum and all the rest is custom made.
Gauges are from New vintage USA.
Patience is beeing tested now waiting for the rest of the interior :).
Car wrapping is going to be a weekend from now...
Just need to get the transmission fixed!!
Rest is small stuff such as installing the hood and making sure the windows are lined out perfectly and some rubbers...

Well fixed the transmission almost, just need to adjust the angle of the connection from pedal to pushrod.
Installed that thing 5times by now, getting really good at it :)
Been busy with many small things and bleeding the brake system, parking brake, fixing a fuel leak, water leak etc small but irritating stuff.
Decided to mount a spoiler at the rear just like eliminators have.
Attached it without locking it down.

Decided to go for a ride yesterday but had to bleed the brakes, boy what a mess i made :).
half of the connections were still open...
After that my connections at the front callipers kept on leaking,
Had to screw up perfectly nice callipers to make it work...
The wilwood letters were in the way of my brake line connection, had to grind some off them off.
perfect fit now and who has Wood disc brakes and callipers ?
Exactly, that's what i call custom.

Finally was able to get it on the road for the firs time since rebuilding it.
Rough idle, needs some finetuning and that squeaking sound is probably from the coolant leak before..
Sitting still for 10 years almost, so happy that its driving again!

Got my car back, still got some things left to do but the general view is there...
Need to install the windshield, some parts of the interior, install backup light lenses and fix some small issues electrical wise, fix the brakes and fix my clutch pedal...getting there!!
The cover i made for the rear lights and indicators was going to be dark see trough but now its covered with a dark hexagon foil and i am liking the result!

Pictures from the current state,
Carbon fiber wrap (semigloss) with red striping (gloss)
Bumpers and rear wing are in gloss black finish.
Not sure what you guys think off this but this cougar is for me the coolest one i have seen so far
and i am not saying this because it is my car, its just amazing.
Sadly it is very difficult to take a picture of a carbon fiber wrap, difficult to get it nice on display on screen, looks way better in real life.

That is very cool.
Question, How did you eliminate the trim around the grille/headlight area?
70CougarXr7
04-28-2020, 01:11 PM
Welded it from the inside ( put a small plate in the holes) and finished it off with some filler.
Had to do it since i am missing one piece of trim and it is very hard to get theses pieces...
Thanks for the compliment :)

On my list to get bigger tires in the back.
But not sure how big you can go without mini tubbing it...bit off a gamble at the moment
