What is the opinion on bolting a 4L65E behind a stock LSA. The car will not be raced and the motor will be left stock, at least for now.

I think there is a good reason the GMPP Connect and Cruise LSA package has a 4L80E instead of the 4L65E/4L70E that comes with most of their LS packages. The LS7 comes with a 4L80E too...

I would not do it. Do it once and do it right.

Drive an LSA powered car and you will understand how hard it is to take it easy.

I have a 6L90E that is currently on the motor. With that being said I did not wan to open up the tunnel on a car that has a finished bottom. I guess I will look into a 80 and see where that sends me.

Wayne aka Motown454 on this site has an LSA and 4L80E in a 69 Camaro. He has a build thread.

GMPP has a 4L75e that they rate at 650lb/ft...

We have a 6L90E in our latest build. Will never do that again. What a tuning nightmare unless it's 100% stock. Found out that the MAF even controls the trans shifting!!

Looks like GMPP now offers the LSA with 4L75E or 4L85E.

This is why I recommended Speartech for the 6L90E with an LSA. They are one of the few capable of properly tuning a 6L90E.

I run a built 4L60E behind my LSA. No problems in over 3K miles. Like anything else, you need to put the right parts in it and it will survive......

I have had 3 rebuilds with 4L60E with stronger internals from Sonnax but i still peeled it like an onion in the end. Now i have junkyard takeout 4L80E and never had issues for the last 2 years. Only thing not stock is my 3500 TC. On the second gen firebird, it took a few persuasive hits to the tunnel to accept the case but worth it a million times.
Spend once i say.

4L75E is the answer, and only around $3k if you shop around. Smaller than the 80, tougher than the 60/65/70, and brand new.

I've had nothing but rotten luck with 4L60's and their variants, even behind stock power plants. Would not recommend, 1 out of 10

80e's are almost indestructible. The 6 speeds are a nightmare to calibrate.

So my next question is can you use the 65E trans controller on an 80

Pretty sure you cannot. You could buy the GMPP controller and harness for the LSA and 4L80E, assuming it is still available. If not you could use the GMPP LSA 4L85E trans, harness and controller.

Answer subject to fact checking... :)

What controller, perhaps a T42?

You can use a stock e38 pcm with a t42 to control a 4l80e. Just have to use a truck tune as a baseline. T42 can control either 4l60e or a 4l80e. If you’re ditching the dbw you can use a 0411 pcm to control a 4l80e as well.

I've got a built 4L70 behind a Forged LS2, 370ci, Cam, TEA heads, Magnuson TVS supercharger, headers. Best guess is the engine makes about 650 at the tire.

This is in an All Wheel Drive Trailblazer SS with a Yank stall converter. It is very hard on trans, and it is raced regularly, this thing has probably 200 1/4 mile passes on it. The builder I use requires shipping it halfway across the country to him, but he is worth it.
