We've been looking at changing out the brake system on a track car.What we're running just isn't working. I've been playing with the barke system calculator found here. http://www.tceperformanceproducts.com/dual-bias-calc/ But I'm left with some confusion. I'm looking at some 4-piston calipers. When I add two additional caliper pistons into the calculations the brake forces multiply. It's my understanding from reading several brake engineering sites, that the second set of pistons are ignored in calculating the clamping forces. 4 x 1.75 pistons should be considered as giving the same clamping force as 2 x 1.75.

Is the calculator wrong? Or would I actually be gaining more clamping force by going to four pistons?

I was under the impression that when doing these calculations that only pistons on one side of the caliper are counted. From looking at that calculator it takes that into account.

Hmm. When I input diameters for two pistons, I get one figure for the torque output. If I add the other two, the figure for sq. in goes up as does the actual torque numbers.

So, I'm guessing that to be accurate, I need to add in figures for a single side. That's too bad because to increase the square inches over the 2.75" dia. GM Metric calipers we are starting with, I'm going to have to start looking at bigger bucks. Wilwood Dynalites would have been a cheaper proposition.

You will find that many racing calipers have less piston area than the older big single piston calipers. The increase in torque comes from larger rotors and more boost from the power assist. Multi-piston calipers also have more even pad wear.

I have made a brake calculator that you can use online if you're thinking about changing your brake setup. It will show you the change in brake performance in both percentage and actual brake torque in Nm (with a converter to Imperial added). It's easy to use, and please read EVERY word so you know what you're dealing with. I don't claim this calculation is 100% accurate because a lot of things, including subjective choices and inputs, affect brake calculations; it's a pure static calculation; don't account for the dynamics involved. Mehrwertsteuer Rechner Use a comma instead of a dot, and feel free to ask questions if you're unsure.

How do we get a copy of it?
