View Full Version : 1968 Firebird project

After years of searching, looking and dreaming about owning a 67 or 68 Firebird I finally got my chance to fulfill a childhood dream of mine. In the spring of 1983 my dad brought home a Champagne 326 H.O. 1967 Firebird. As I walked home from school that day, I saw the surface rusted, jacked up rear axle, stars and bars draped across the package tray atrocity and my first grade self thought, "Why did he bring home this piece of junk?"

My younger brother was always hanging around that car.

Pics circa 1983 (rear shackle extenders were removed at this point.)

My mom, who has passed, restored all of the emblems and reupholstered the interior. My uncle helped my dad rebuild the engine and put it all back together. (He later bought it off of my dad in 1987, selling it to a collector in 1988 and bought a new black 5.0 5 speed Mustang GT.) My dad had his friend paint it Guard's Red. When I saw it after all the work they did it left a lasting impression on me. I was enchanted by it. It was and has remained my dream car.

Last summer my girlfriend's Uncle came across a first gen in Ohio. He asked what I was looking for and I told him a 67 or 68. Turns out a friend of a friend of his had passed and was beginning a full restoration of his 1968 Firebird. His son sold it to me cheap and I flew up to Ohio, rented a UHaul and towed it back to Florida. The firewall, cowl and rear seat bracket were the only original metal left.

I've got a ton of pics to load with motor and suspension progress, but for now I'll post up what I got done today.

Hopefully I'm done with the grind wheels for a while. Stripped the interior and finished coating the floorboard, inner firewall, back seat brace and package tray.

Remembered to take before during and after pics.

Thank you, trying to take my time to build a reliable semi-daily driver.

Awesome! I've read through your thread a while back and got plenty of great ideas from your car so I thank you for that. Funny, I stumbled on your photobucket while deciding on my wheels. Small world.

Thanks Shawn!

I brushed on POR-15 and plan on hitting the trunk, inner panels, wheel wells and underside with truck bed liner. Probably will get Upol's Raptor liner.

My plan for the car is restomod, I plan on going with a FiTech fuel injection on the 400 backed by a lock up converter 2004-R. (The missus wants to drive it so auto it is, and my need to row through gears is satiated by my '87 S10 I built with a '95 LT4/T56 combo.)

Went disc brakes all around, will post pics and process. Rear is a 3.55 lsd Pontiac 8.2". The axle housing # came back as 4.11 so at some point the rear was rebuilt. From what I can tell it was a 350/350 car. I'll have to send the VIN to PHS since the build tag was removed.

Already installed 2" drop coils and looking at 3" drop leafs for the rear. I retire in a little over 10 years and have plans of going all out by then and dropping in a new 650 hp LT4 4L70E combo with a C5 based subframe and IRS... Until then going budget minded and building a reliable cruiser.

Photobucket is on the fritz but I'll try my best to post...

The car was hit on the passenger front and the upper control arm was bent along with both tie rods. Frame measured true and was untouched so I started out with a pair of '68 Camaro upper and lower control arms off of a car my girlfriend Kristin's cousin was working on. My car shell came with a red Prothane bushing and mount kit. Prepped and painted the UCA's and LCA's with POR-15 and pressed in the bushings.

Picked up some "LS1" brakes and had drum hubs turned down to fit the 2002 F-body rotors. Brake lines clipped into the '68 bracket with minor modification. No issues lock to lock.

I saw a '68 Camaro build on another thread that utilized '98-'05 S10 Blazer rear brakes. They allow for a stock style parking brake cable that engages a shoe, have aluminum calipers and allow for a 15" rim (in case I ever get the urge to run a race slick...) The most important factor was the ability to use a 4WD mount on the driver side (caliper forward) and a 2WD on the passenger (caliper rear) allowing the stock staggered shock mounting position.

Start:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/04/image_zpsebkybazc-1.jpeg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/bennsb/media/image_zpsebkybazc.jpeg.html)

Removal of the rear axle and old drum assembly went very easily much to my surprise after working on the front end. Realized I didn't have a '68 Camaro rear end but have a BOP rear that does not have c-clips and uses pressed axle bearings and an outside bracket to bolt the axles in place.

I was fully aware of this but did not realize the axle stop bracket will have to mount behind the Blazer caliper mounting bracket. Rather than press off the bearing and try to slide the Blazer mount behind the axle bracket I cut the retaining bracket so it slipped over the axle and was placed in its new correct position for the disc brake configuration.

My dilemma- The holding bracket needs to go behind the caliper mounting bracket. Holding bracket is slid on before bearing and axle spacer are pressed on:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/04/image_zpsjxwwakce-1.jpeg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/bennsb/media/image_zpsjxwwakce.jpeg.html)

The caliper mount leaves a huge gap between the holding plate and bearing. Solution:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/04/image_zpsryoe58bo-1.jpeg (http://s297.photobucket.com/user/bennsb/media/image_zpsryoe58bo.jpeg.html)

I cut the holding bracket just wide enough to slide off of the axle with my Dremel tool. There is a drain area already on the bracket at the bottom so I cut there. I lost minimal bearing contact area. (Also used the axle flange bolts from the Blazer.)

Rather than buy a spacer, I figured I wasn't going to use the drum backer plate and cut out and fabricated my own:

Awesome! I've read through your thread a while back and got plenty of great ideas from your car so I thank you for that. Funny, I stumbled on your photobucket while deciding on my wheels. Small world.

Ben

Glad my progress could inspire you! I know what it's like to scour thread upon thread on here, trying to gather ideas and form a plan of attack, so I tried to be as specific as possible with my thread for the more budget minded enthusiast!

And yea, I'm constantly getting compliments on the wheel choice around here! I love how it ties back to the original Rally II's. The inserts of mine are painted grey too, so that sets me apart a bit.

I'm anxious to see the 2004R install, that was on my list too, but I have no monies for a while. haha A guy on the Pontiac forums walked me through his install, but people always make stuff out to seem easier than it is!

Thanks Josh! Yeah, I saw the argent inserts and PMD center caps. My Dad painted his inserts black and used the 70's brushed center caps with the red arrow. I might go that route if I can score a nice set. I just installed the Bowtie Overdrives transmission crossmember and it was simple. If you had a TH350 it's about as direct a direct swap as you can get. You can use a TH400 crossmember but it blocks the pan and access to the transmission filter. I'd say the money spent was worth it.

Today's goodies:

Haha, yeah. It's coming out for the headers anyhow. I set the motor and transmission in to make more room in the garage. I have a shop crane so 4 bolts removed and it's out. I ran my S10's fuel lines and brakes while the drivetrain was out. I'll probably keep saying it but this car has been way easier to work on.

I'm going to coat the underside and inner panels/trunk area with bed liner then run NiCop brake lines. Guess that means the leaf springs and gas tank are on deck.

Love me some square body S-10's too! Nice job on that one!!

And yea, I've got a TH350 in my car now, but it originally had a powerglide. We needed a converter to correct all the issues the car was having due to NOT installing a bigger one with the cam swap (we didn't know any better at the time lol), so the guys on the Pontiac forums talked me into searching for a TH350 on craigslist because they were cheap, it would give me an extra gear, and they usually come with a bigger converter too. All was true, and I picked one up for $300 that's been working out good.

I drive the piss out of mine though, as much as the weather lets me, so an OD gear would be great for me. My understanding of "lock up converters" and "lock up controllers" and stuff like that is where the swap gets foggy for me. I guess "locking up the converter" gets you even more RPM back, like a 5th gear?

More and more people are opting for the 4L80E's because of the power they can handle, since the 2004R's were made during a time when they were being put behind 305's with less than 200hp lol, but that swap is well into the $3000-$4000 range...eff! There's a pretty reputable transmission guy around here who builds 2004R's for the Turbo Buick guys, I'm sure his transmission would hold up to anything I could throw at it for years to come. My friend has one in his 1000+hp T-type and has no complaints.

With a servo, billet drum and upgraded shaft and a few minor parts a 2004-R will stand up to 1,000 hp. The lock up converter is like an electric clutch that stops the torque converter from slipping. It helps the trans run at cooler temperature and drops you about 300/350 rpms in your OD cruising speed, acting like a "5th gear" if you will. You can run a manual switch or a switch made to install on your brake pedal. (Unlocks automatically and will only allow locking in D and OD gear) It uses the 4 pin output by your gear selector bracket. I'm going to buy the switch and install it. I had a manual switch on my old '85 S10 with a Vortec 350 backed by a 700R-4. I got tired of flipping that switch real quick.

With all the LS craze you can find some awesome deals on old transmissions. I picked my 2004-R up for $180 cash.

The 2004-R is virtually the same length as the TH350 and you can use the driveshaft without modification. I'm going to drive it "spiritedly" and on long cruises. If it breaks phase 2 of my build will just happen a little early...

Josue

Nice. I'll be on the lookout for when you install all that! The other guy spelled it out pretty good, but when it comes to stuff I've never messed with before, I'm more of a visual guy. He's a good 2hrs away from me too, so enlisting his help in person with the swap is a stretch. lol

Driveshaft that came with the car was too long, not even sure if it was for this car. Scored a 49.5" aluminum driveshaft off of Craigslist. Guy said he had it made for his old Camaro and never installed it and it has sat in the back of his garage for 20 years. He said he spent a week's pay on it back then. I gave him 3 crisp Jackson's and a handshake for it.

Started tackling the firewall. I cut out the two rust holes by the doors. Not much welding to do for the patches. I also ordered the pedals and covers. Going to weld the necessary patches and seam seal the firewall. After it spraying matte black and coating the underside with bed liner, I'll run the gas and brake lines and mount the subframe.

Researched the control switches for the 2004-R lockup. Going to search for individual parts and price it out over a complete kit. I will be sure to document and have a step by step how-to for those of you wanting to do the 2004-R swap. May be a while, but I should get quite a bit going this month. I'm leaning on the notion of a Camaro horseshoe console shifter. I can get an overdrive selector kit for that shifter with a corresponding indicator plate. My friend had one in his '72 Monte Carlo and it reminded me of an airplane cockpit. I figure it will be less intrusive and look a little more like it belongs rather than a B&M Mega Shifter.

Sounds like a plan!

My mom just retired in July after a 30 year career for the FAA, 10 yrs as an Air Traffic Controller, and 20 in management. Her retirement present to herself was a 1969 Camaro Convertible. I searched for a while for her, and we ended up finding a great buy that just needed a few things she wanted to check all the boxes. The main thing was....a "pilot" shifter, in her words. haha So we're gathering parts for the column to floor shift swap.

05-05-2017, 01:31 PM
No advantage per se if you don't run it at the track, just assurance I'm not going to miss a shift and grenade the transmission. Really can't count the weight reduction in the pocketbook as a positive, lol. I had a ratchet shifter in my old S10 and just got used to it. Maybe it'll keep the Missus from dropping in low gear and roasting the tires...

Ha...same here. My wife bitches about not knowing what gear the car is in because the shifter isn't perfectly lined up with the "D" on the shift plate! Seriously...if you can't count down 3 spots from park to know you have it right; R...N...D, then stay out of my car!!

Headers arrived on my porch today. I got them installed in about 25 minutes. Way easier than my S10. I used nord-lock washers on the header bolts. These cars really are quite simple to take apart and put back together, just like the model cars of our youth. But MAN does it take way more time!!! haha

It all looks so easy, makes me think "I could tear it apart in a weekend and clean my engine up real nice like this". Then I have to remind myself, that it would probably take me weeks if not a month or 2 to get it all back together!

After a long work weekend and taking it easy yesterday, I tackled my EFI fuel tank. Following the easy to follow instructions, I measured, cut and assembled the fuel pump and return along with the fuel sending unit. Tank was 6 3/8" deep, mid point for the rheostat was 3 5/16". Everything checked out, fuel pump sits nicely in the built in reservoir. I used PTFE thread sealant on all the mounting screws. The tank mocked up easily. I used some peel and stick roofing seal as my anti squeak strips on the tank and straps. I plan on using a C5 filter/regulator when I run the fuel lines. Turns out the FiTech calls for 58 psi so that works out well.

Been a while, not much done. Tidied up some firewall issues, a little more prep work to be done before the subframe gets bolted back on. I decided to go with a gas strut instead of the torsion bars. Welds could have been a lot prettier but it will hold. I'll dress that up later.

Plumbed my -6AN braided fuel lines. Had some left over 3/4" pex crimps and they worked perfect. I used heat shrink tubing over the crimp ring. I have isolation straps to hold the line in place, will tackle that tomorrow. I plan on getting Pypes SGF70 transverse exhaust so I grabbed some nomex sleeve to shield to lines from the tank to the Wix 33737 Corvette fuel filter/regulator. I decided to route it on the driver side given how the Pypes cross flow is routed. I tucked the filter up on the back frame rail, happy with how it turned out. I may weld in a rivnut to bolt the filter into for peace of mind.

I really think you should see if you can put the Ram Air setup on that Fi-Tech. There is a guy that sells the correct stamped pans on http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com site fairly cheep. I think my setup was under $400.

Bennsb
10-24-2017, 08:50 AM
It's possible and on my punch out list. Kind of low on the priority list, low performance gain but definitely tons of cool points. I'd have to run a banjo bolt on the supply to clear the ram air pan. A few guys have run them on second gen shaker hood setups with no issues. Wish my budget was as plentiful as my ideas for this car...

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. Right now the exhaust, shifter and center console are breaking the bank.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll have those coming with my next parts order. I have the factory clips on my LT4/T56 S10 as I used the stock plastic fuel lines off of a 4th gen Camaro. I bought new inserts every time I've disconnected the fuel lines and haven't had an issue in 6 years of daily driving but those are all GM factory parts. $35 is well worth the peace of mind knowing my rear disc brakes aren't going to get a gasoline shower.

Thanks again!

Going to incorporate the 69 shifter button. Camaro console is on its way. Need to put the front and rear glass in soon so I can get the interior prices out of the garage and in the car.

Got the FiTech installed and it works great. I drove her around the block for the maiden voyage and I’m quite pleased with my progress. The disc brakes work well and the throttle response was excellent. The ID tag was lost on the trans but it shifted from 1st to 2nd at 5 grand quite firmly. Don’t know if it is a bad fitting or bad line but my return is seeping at the top of the tank. 5 steps forward, 1 step back.

Got rained out this afternoon but managed to drill 36 holes in the sheet metal installing the passenger mirror and emblems/trim. Should be getting epoxy primer soon.

GREAT build! I love 68's- owned a few!! So glad to see it's Pontiac powered... but I see one huge issue-- You used a 557 block (the last three casting numbers)- these blocks were made when GM was forcing Pontiac to cut costs, so they're thinner castings, and have some cheapened parts on them (Pontiac went back to the earlier 400 castings- Block ID is "XX"- due to warranty issues with the 557 blocks) vs. the earlier blocks. If you're using it as a cruiser, no worries, but.... if you're planning on beating on it, or building it for more than 400 HP, I'd SERIOUSLY consider using another block.

Thanks! It’s a driver for now. I picked up the ‘77 block from a speedshop in Gainesville, FL. They had it bored .030 over and ready for assembly when the owner of the “Smokey and the Bandit” Trans Am it was out of sold the car. The purchaser was doing an LS swap so I got the “inferior” 557 block W72 engine for a song with the reworked 6x 4 heads. If it implodes it’ll just force me to install the 2015+ LT4 motor sooner than later. 😁

My junkyard radiator (94 S10 Blazer HD) for my S10 I got in May of 2011 split this morning dropping off my son at school, 38 miles from home. I swapped in a new one in 20 minutes but it ruined my plans on working on the car. Oh well, still shooting for being on the road by Spring. Connected the steering column and dropped her off of the jack stands. I stripped my two driver seats and am going to have to rebuild the lower seat springs. My passenger seat turned out nice so I’m sure I’ll get the driver side in order. It was late but got some pics of my LT4/T56 S10 next to the Firebird. She’s lower than I thought.

Got the passenger window in, drove it around the block. 200-4R shifts great through 1st, 2nd, and Drive. Have to wait on overdrive, can’t go that fast in the neighborhood. Time for final fitment and wiring work. She stayed running at 188 degrees at the manifold crossover, read 210 off the passenger head. Took my son around the block. He asked if the car was made before seatbelts were invented. Overdrive works, speedo is off, reads fast. I need a 28 tooth driven gear to correct it. Cleaned up the wiring under the hood and wired in my fans and relay. All seems to be working well. Passenger head temp is reading 190 on the mechanical gauge and coolant crossover is reading 176 on the FiTech dashboard display.

Finished a 2 hour test drive today with zero issues. Temp stayed at 190-195 at the heads and oil pressure never dipped below 20 at idle. I’ve got mysel another highway cruiser.

A while back my FiTech system crashed. The in-tank pump started shutting on and off then the main power 30 amp fuse blew. While tracing my wiring and double checking my work, I put in another fuse and the pump stayed on constantly. I tried starting the engine for about 30 seconds when a brown plume of smoke rose from behind the ecu cover.

I contacted Speedway motors and got a copy of my receipt. I contacted customer service after realizing my purchase was two years ago, therefore the one year warranty was long past. Murphy’s law. They advised to contact FiTech and see what their analysis was and,if it came to it, they volunteered to share in the cost of repair. Kudos to them for the offer.

After reading quite a few threads and reviews, I contacted FiTech and explained my plight of this $1100 paper weight I now own. I was given instructions on shipping and was sent an RMA form to complete. I finally got around to shipping it out 3 weeks ago.

With the FiTech on the fritz, I bought an Edelbrock performer 750 carburetor of Craigslist locally and rebuilt it. I pondered over my fuel pump dilemma- 52 psi was just going to flood the manifold if I hooked that up to the carb. Running an in-line pump or mechanical pump ran the risk of flashing if I tried to pull fuel through the disconnected in-tank pump. I decided on an in-tank pump used in an old Econoline van with a 4 bbl and a few carb’d Volvos.

The switch went rather easily, placing the rear axles on jack stands allowed easy access to the fuel pump assembly. In about 45 minutes I had the pumps swapped and tank bolted back in. (Lining up all the screws on the cap was the hardest part, the last screw took some time to line up.) The lope in idle was much more present and I have a slight hesitation in overdrive lockup at low speed but it has run well, especially for the $150 spent total to convert.

I got an email back with an invoice from FiTech, $310 to replace the ECU. Searching back through my build pictures, it appears a forklift or something similar punctured the original packing box and slightly dented the ECU cover. This caused an internal short and fried the ECU. The resolve on the invoice was replacing the ECU and waiving all cost. My bill was $0.00 which I was not expecting being a year past warranty. I was very pleased with the customer service, they kept in contact with email and my fixed FiTech system arrived at my door yesterday.

Now I get to put the 255 lph Walbro pump back in the tank and connect the pigtails on the wiring. I think I’ll take a bunch of pics on the install and post here soon. After driving around with the carb, I really miss the fuel injection.

Great to hear that FiTech worked with you. Says a lot about the company.

All went well with reinstalling the FiTech. I modified my 200-4R governor, switched the drive gear to a 10 tooth to correct my speedometer, and replaced the worn TV plunger spring. Shift points were 1000-1500 at cruise and 3500-4000 at WOT. Now shifts are 2000-2400 cruising and 5000 rpm WOT. Pretty pleased, tires break loose at will. Next up will be locking and phasing the HEI distributor and wiring in the timing control from the FiTech ECU.
