I have a TH350 behind a Pontiac 400 with a cam that Comp recommends a mild converter to pair with. By "mild" they mean what? 2000 RPM? I also see choices for "sprag" and "spragless" converters and I can't get any info clear enough to help me make a choice. I'm also looking at 3.42 rear gears over my stock 2.73 if that helps.

What RPM range does Comp list for this cam and what rear tire diameter are you planning to run?

If you want clear information based on fact contact any convertor manufacturer of your choosing...they will ask you all the pertinent questions and supply you with what you actually need.

General rule of thumb from the converter people is 300 rpm higher than the bottom of your cam's power range. So, if you have a 2500-5500 rpm rated cam, then 2800 rpm stall. This is a little tough to pick unless you've had it dyno'd. MOST of the cams advertised are rated for the middle engine in the range -- meaning if it says Pontiac 326-455 - 2500-5500 rpm, then you could expect that power range out of a 400. Same cam in a 326 will range from maybe 3000-6000, in a 455 it might make power from 2000-5000.
