Hello! Long time lurker but this is the very first build thread I have ever made. This is my 15th car in the last 3 years and im looking to stop flipping and stick with one for awhile and build it. The project is a 1986 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. I bought it running and driving but needing a lot of TLC. It is a 350 SBC with a 200r4 auto and a 7.5 10 bolt. Seems mostly original with some remnants of a very powerful audio setup in its past (its an 80's Monte what would you expect). The keywords for this build are simple: unique, functional, fun. The plan is to build a mild pro touring 1980's throwback nascar Monte Carlo. I am redoing the wheels tires, brakes, suspension, engine, trans, rear end, the works. The interior will be mainly stripped with two buck racing seats, no carpet, no rear seats and no headliner. In place of those items will be black sound deadener. The gauges are being swapped out for a full set of Autometer gauges and the dash board will stay in the car but am unsure if door panels will be staying or not. I will be going with a C5 front brake setup and rear discs but haven't decided on them yet. 17x8 wheels with 255/40/17's all around. Planning on picking up a set of 17x9's for the rear and a large set of drag radials in the future. The suspension will be QA1's stage 2 handling kit minus their coil over setup. The plan is to run a 5.3 in the car with the existing 200r4. I have ported 853 heads, an ms3 cam and will be going with a carb'd setup and msd ignition. Going to send the 200r4 out to get rebuilt to hold roughly 400 wheel horsepower and the 7.5 will be taken out in favor of an 8.5 posi out of a GN or 442. The car will be decaled up just like a nascar and sit low and sound mean. I haven't seen too many people take these g bodies and replicate the nascars of the 80's so i thought id go down that route for the uniqueness factor. Not to mention I love nascar, pro touring g bodies, and things that sit low and make evil sounds. So this project has got me excited to say the least. I'm working with a limited budget but will be piecing together the whole build throughout these upcoming months.

Didnt like the black wheels with 215/65/15's so test fit some 255's i had laying around on the car and liked the look enough to keep them on until my new wheels get here in a few weeks.

Welcome and cool build!
Wanna sell the gauges?
This forum is awesome. $100,000 builds, and builds that start with a bombercan painjob as step one. I love it here.
Cool car. Looking forward to hearing all your plans.

Thank you! For what it is I don't think the car turned out half bad with a rattlecan paint job! But then again I've never been too much into the look of the car..just how it drives mainly.

Ended up not going with qa1's stage 2 complete kit. I bought there basic qa1 stage one kit without shocks that comes with some simple chassis stiffening pieces, then got some umi shocks, drop spindles I can modify for the c5 brakes, lowering springs and rear sway bar and such. Should handle a little better than now after all that is installed but I am doing an Autocross with the car October 22/23 on stock suspension just to get a baseline first...that should be a riot in itself :jump:

You're looking for stock Monte Carlo gauges?
Im looking for a set of stock type gauges but dont want idiot lights, Since I will be gutting all the wiring from the truck Im going to get a universal wiring solution and the engine is a GM (Cadillac) and the gas sender will be of some sort of GM I figured getting GM gauges would be the way to go. These dont look too big for the dash of the Toyota.

Well started finally tearing apart the suspension! Figured I'd start with the rear thinking it'd be easy...but after a few snapping the heads off some bolts and on blasting my way through everything the only items that are off at the moment are the rear sway bar and rear shocks. I'm working on getting the lower control arms off and then those and the springs will be out and things will start going back together! New QA1 rear lower control arms, qa1 sway bar, umi shocks, umi rear shock tower brace and the 2" lowering springs. Should have time today to finish up disassembly and getting some new parts on!

Good news! Came home and my wheels are here! 17x8 cragars...yeah pretty simple, cheap...and heavy...but I didn't have much budget for wheels and needed a 17 to fit the corvette brakes in front. Also if you look at the 80's nascars they had a similar wheel so I went for it! Also my UMI c5 front brake adapter kit came and my ARP wheel studs came as well. After the rear suspension is knocked out I'll be starting right away on the front and getting these big brakes on the car and my front suspension stuff. Here's my question. I initially wanted to paint these wheels the red that's on the car (GM bright red) and have them stand out once all the decals were on. But Ive received the wheels and I am kind of digging the black with red and blue stripe on them...you guys got any opinions? I guess I'll put them on the car tonight and see if I like the black look or not. If not I'll paint them red. I'll attach a picture to show the red wheels on a g body where I got the idea from.

Well my c5 calipers finally came in the mail today! That completes everything I need for the brake swap up front. Got my pads and rotors a few days back and the umi kit had been staring me in the eyes since it arrived haha. As soon as rear suspension is knocked out I'll be starting in that. Which speaking of! Both rear control arms are out, both springs and shocks. Reassembly is starting to happen back there. Finally. I'm tired of the garage being a mess of scattered tools and rust from these worn out pieces!

Progress has finally been made! Rear suspension is completely in and done.
Here's a quick parts list of what I have
-QA1 Lower trailing arms
-UMI street performance shocks
-UMI rear shock tower brace
-QA1 rear sway bar
-UMI 2" lowering springs
That's all for now. Not a crazy budget for this car. But since I had it buttoned up it does ride a lot firmer and you can tell right off the bat it's a tighter feeling and more precise. Front suspension is next and I'm getting tires mounted this weekend. If anyone was interested in part numbers or how the install went on an item I'm more than happy to help! The trailing arms were the bigger pain to get out cause the bushing had made itself one with the rearend house pretty much haha. So after giving it a good amount of leverage with a crowbar it came out, with a nice big patch of rust where the bushing was, so I chipped at the big chunks with a screwdriver and then took a DA sander with 80 grit and made it nice and smooth for the qa1 arms.
Here's the UMI rear shock tower brace
133291
QA1 Rear Sway Bar
133292
The new suspension put in. I didn't do a huge job cleaning up the rearend at some mounting points because the rearend is being swapped for a 8.5 10 bolt soon. (Still in the process of finding a good one)

The rear brace installed

Got them mounted! Couldn't wait to take pics but it was already dark so these are what I have right now. I'll get some better pictures tomorrow in the day light. But going from a 65 series side profile to a 40 series got me about another inch and a half lower actually! Going to be starting on front suspension tomorrow after I pick up a more accurate torque wrench. My last one broke on me finishing up the rear. 133443133444

Well I don't have a lot of progress, been pretty swamped with school and work. But I've been dying to get back onto some car work so today I just did the simple task of modifying my drop spindles and painting them. With the C5 front brake conversion you have to cut the old g body caliper mounting tabs on the spindle so I did a cut with the sawzall and sanding any sharp points where I cut with 80 grit sand paper and finishied it off smooth with 200 grit. Might be a little overkill for a spindle nobody will ever see but I figure if I make sure everything she perfect with it now I shouldn't have a problem in the future.
3rd pic is the unmodified belltech 2" drop spindle
2nd Pic is the spindle cut and sanded
1st is the spindle painted with a flat black rust protectant paint
Sorry for weird order, trying to upload on my phone is definitely a struggle sometimes haha. Hope to have a bigger update soon!

Well I've got a decent update for you guys finally. The hubs have been mounted to the spindles. All the ball joints have been installed onto the front end. Spindles have been mounted the car and are ready for the brakes now! Finally got to throw the wheels on and see the drop and I love it! its hard to portray in the photos since i still havent rolled the car out to get a side shot but as soon as the brakes are done ill get a few side shots. I still have most of the actual suspension to take care of too tho. New QA1 front sway bar, along with UMI shocks and belltech 1" drop springs. The only dissambley I have done is taken out the front bar...but ill be getting to work on taking out the springs and shocks either today or tomorrow and we'll be close to finishing up the front end. I only had a few problems when assembling the front end parts. 1) The captive washer for the spindle was too large for the wilwood aluminum cap to be installed so i had to spend some time at the grinder filing away some of the material but eventually got both to fit under the cap without too much material taken off. And while the car was still on jackstands the upper part of the spindle by the original dust shield mount was contacting the upper control arm and not allowing a lock to lock steering motion...but I put the wheels on and lowered the car on the ground, and the upper control arm settled at its normal ride height position and the car was able to turn lock to lock just fine. So were finally getting somewhere! Hopefully more progress to come before the weekend is out. I'll attach some pictures of the progress now.

the drop spindles made a world of difference. I was scared there for a minute...the gap in the wheel well. Now it's back on point.
Do you think that shock tower in the rear does a lot?
epeterson
11-18-2016, 05:18 AM
Haha no worries it was definitely going lower! I still have 1" drop springs for the front end but I fear they won't lower it too much more because they appear to be the original springs and probably have some sag by now. The 2" drop springs I put in the rear only lower about 1" 1/3...so we'll see. If it does end up lowering the front end more I might want to go with a three inch drop in the back, the rake is alright right now but I think I'd like the look more dropped in the back some. As for the shock tower brace, I did all my upgrades at one time unfortunately. So ultimately the car did feel a lot tighter and handled better but I can't definitively say the shock tower brace is working miracles or anything. The only reason I got it is because my friend with a regal got one for UMI and said it really improved things for his car so I went for it. Thanks for following along with the build!

Sooo....small problem. I finally got around two fitting the c5 brakes fully assembled on the car and the wheels contact the caliper bracket ever so slightly. So now the wheels do not allow the car to turn because of this contact issue. I did some research and it seems like people with cragar window d wheels and c5 brakes like a 1/4 spacer between the two to work properly. So now I'm in the market for a 1/4 inch spacer, any one have any recommendations on brand to go with?
epeterson
12-01-2016, 08:05 AM
Small update: ordered some 1/4 inch thick spacers from Motorsport-tech and got the c5 brakes bolted onto the driverside as well now. Waiting on some banjo bolts that actually fit and then the brakes will e bled and by that time the spacers should be here! Pictures to come when parts come in

New update with the Monte. Got both front springs and shocks out now. The shocks were the main holdup as the were pretty rusted in there and none of the bolts actually wanted to come out so the dremel was my bestfriend that day haha. After removing the shocks I took both spindles off the car again and lowered the lower control arm until the spring came out. Turns out the passenger side spring had half a coil broken off at the bottom and was just floating around in there:hammer: I have new belltech 1" drop springs but with the condition of the old springs being quite poor and that coil actually broken off I think i'm going to raise the front end if anything with these brand new springs..So i think i'll be taking a 1/4 or 1/2 a coil off both sides and seeing where i like it for now. Regardless, springs and shocks will be going in soon and the car will finally be able to roll around under its own power again. Not that it matters because Chicago got its first snowfall of the year and now theres salt all over the streets :banghead:
Its amazing what a change can happen in just a few hours.

So I'm at a crossroads with build here. My body guy friend cane over and saw what I did with the paint on this car...to say the least he thought it was atrocious haha. Not necessarily the color but the application. I too have been having doubts about the paint and am not as fond of the red/white/blue as I thought I would be so I come here to ask your guy's opinion because I go back and forth on the matter. Doni repaint it a different color scheme but still continue with a NASCAR theme and actually have a nice color combo and sticker it up with sponsor decals, numbers, the whole 9 yards? Or my alternative is I was thinking of just stripping all this paint and going with a simple white paint job, clean/subtle and ultimately not as crazy as this. What's your guys opinion?

Hi i just saw your thread and have to say looks like a fun build,
I've always loved the g-body in a nice clean white with the black cragars so i will say I'm biased. But at the end of the day what do you want? Clean subtle and maybe a little bit of a sleeper? or do you want something that's clean but also draws attention and will stand out more so?

At this point, I feel like I've seen 100,000 variations of paint on Monte Carlo's...from lowriders to drag cars. Yours was certainly different. I'm not a fan of all of the decals, but I think you can still go with red, white, and blue, just maybe in smaller doses. Maybe a white car with red/blue stripes or some variation of that.

Sorry for the lack of updates guys, I think its been around 2 months since I last posted progress. Been very busy prepping my 71' Chevelle for paint and sorting the mechanical's with that car. But back to the Monte!
The entire phase 1 build of the suspension is complete!
Here is a list of what has been added to make this car semi competent in the coming autocross season:
Front QA1 Sway Bar
2" Belltech drop spindles
Wilwood Hubs with ARP wheel studs
MOOG Balljoints
C5 corvette front brakes with UMI adapter bracket
1" drop springs which i had from a previous g body and have forgotten the company haha
UMI shocks
Flynbye stainless brake lines
Rear QA1 sway bar
Rear UMI shock tower brace
Rear UMI shocks
Rear UMI 2" drop springs
Rear QA1 lower trailing arms
17x8 Cragar Window D wheels with 255/40/17 Bf Goodrich Sport Comp 2's all around
1/4 Billet Spacers in the front to clear the caliper face
But thats about the extent of upgrades at the moment. This has been phase 1 of my suspension build to get me going out on the autocross course. As the car evolves more so will further suspension upgrades.
Upcoming plans for the car now are:
-New Paint! Not as fond of this paint as I thought i would be and i have started the process of sanding again to make way for a new more permanent paint job with the help of a body friend of mine. Undecided on the exact scheme but have a rough idea of how I want the car to look and I think its really going to be a looker once were done with that.
-New Rearend! The current 7.5 10 Bolt isn't going to cut it for the plans I have with this car so I am in constant search of a nice 8.5 rear that can bolt into this car.
-New engine! The plan is to build a 5.3 to go into here. I have one in the garage currently but am unsure if it will be a good starting point to build upon so I am looking out for a clean lower mileage one now. I have cam and heads for it along with an oil pan and all accessories. Once a new shortblock is purchased it should go together pretty quick.
-Seats. I sold the stock seats as the mounting brackets had broken and the stock side bolstering wasn't going to cut it. In the market for nice fixed back seats now.
Some pictures and updates from the last two months:
The driver front shock mount in the lower control arm had rusted and broke and in order to get the front springs and shock out I had to cut the shock and maneuver the coil spring out in order to get room to work on getting the lower mount off. This is the aftermath of that shock haha.
137190
Old Windshield had some major cracks all throughout it and I didn't think tech inspection would let me run with it so a new windshield has gone in as well!
137192
New FlynBye stainless brake lines, impressed with the quality and fit right up with no leaks, Also comes with standard banjo bolts for stock brakes and new banjo bolts for C5 calipers with associated washers.
137195
First time the car has been off of jack stands, outside and seen the light of day since December, id say its coming along and the ride height is alright the way it is right now. It felt good to get all the dirt, dust and grime out from underneath where that car had been for months.
137194
The chevelle thats been taking up most of my time along with the monte and daily driver silverado in the background.
137196
Monte and the Daily Driver Silverado out for a picture during this week of nice weather.
137197
Finally the clearance between the larger aftermarket sway bar and the 255 front section width of the tires. Most of the people on g body forums are saying a 245 is the maximum width for our cars before you end up rubbing on the front bar. Well even with the added girth of the new front bar and 255 I still do not contact at full lock. I'm sure once the car is out on the course and its in action it will rub somewhat, but on the few test drives i've done since all these upgrades I haven't gotten it to rub once, so i'm quite happy with that.
137201
Well thats all for this update, I believe this post has been long enough haha. Thank you guys for checking it out and ill be sure to update with some more progress soon!

Nice build, this actually gives me some motivation to work on my Monte. I will have to say I am not really a fan of the tri-tone paint scheme, but I am not one to tell how you "should" build your car. I enjoy seeing the g-bodies being built on here. Keep the updates coming. I will attempt to do the same. Unfortunately, that is going to be difficult for me with starting a new job.

New update! Was having some issues with the brakes but got it all ironed out now and they stop hardddd! Very happy with the results. But the big news is I finally picked up the engine for the Monte! It's an iron 5.3 ls motor with roughly 80k when pulled. It's very clean inside and out so the main jobs will just be cleaning and installing new parts on it. I have new heads and an ms3 can to throw in it right now. I just purchased some arp head bolts and have some new head gaskets on the way so the motors top end should be all installed by the end of the weekend. More updates to come soon!

Also removed the rear seat this weekend, going to be saving up for a cage to go in and the rear seat is not staying in the car so removed it when I had some free time. It's packaged up and sitting in the garages attic now in case I ever feel the need to put it back in the car

Closer look at the short block and the heads I got with the motor all cleaned up now

That's all for now! Hope to update soon

Small update for the last few days! Started ordering parts and getting the motor assembled.
Putting a new rear main seal in as long with the rear cover gasket, really trying to cover the motor with all the new gaskets to not have this thing leak oil like any other 5.3 ive had for awhile! Haha

Then i attached the rear cover and got the flexplate on as well.
And yesterday I got my arp head bolts in the mail! Still waiting on the headgaskets to assemble the top end but they will be here soon!

Thats all for now, will update with new info soon

Another small update but an update nonetheless! The body/paint work is starting again. I've started to tackle the problem areas of the body that I neglected before the rattle can job. So this time around i'm ironing out the body and making that to the best it can be and then repainting the Monte. I have yet to decide the exact scheme but have a few ideas on how i want the car to look when i'm all said and done. The car is still going to be NASCAR themed and this time around I will actually start to put that vision into action with door numbers and "sponsor decals". I know its not everyone's style on here but that's how I envisioned building the car when I was shopping for a G body and I want to make it happen. Ill attach some pictures of the slow moving body work and some images of idea's on how I want the car to look at the end.
The worst area by far on the whole body is the passenger door, my body friend is going to try and correct it but if he cant then a new door is going to find its way on here in the near future.

The passenger quarter panel had some rust bubbling on it so I started sanding that tonight
138001
Another problem area that had some rust buildup near the surface that I started to sand and then spot prime
138003
Spot priming the quarter panel that i've been working on tonight
138004
How the car sits right now, not much progress was made but any progress is good in my book. Im trying to get at least one thing a day done on this car so maybe ill be able to drive it sometime soon! :drive: Haha

Here are some photos of inspiration to what I want to design the car around. This time around i'm thinking of just a two color scheme and I'm leaning towards a blue and white scheme but its still up in the air. The body work has to be complete first before I have to worry! That's all for now.

No there is not one for the chevelle, its more of a restoration project with only a few 'pro-touring upgrades'. So I don't think that one will be getting a thread.

Been meaning to update for a few days now and i've finally got the time today! I went ahead and removed most of the interior from the car, assembled some more of the engine, and made more progress with the body work. Its been a busy week but i've got plenty of pictures for you guys, and Ill leave a description in front of every pic!
Remved all the old stereo wiring throughout the car, there is no longer a stereo or speakers in the car at this point and if I did happen to put a stereo in i'll run new stuff throughout.
138271
Center console is out!
138272
Getting the old crusty carpet out
138273
Hard to tell in this picture but it turns out that the wiring from the neutral safety switch corroded at the connectors on my shifter and were so brittle they essentially broke as soon as i jostled the carpet around the shifter haha.
138274
Carpet out and now onto getting all this insulation out. This took quite some time with it all being glued into place, probably one of my least favorite time consuming jobs i've encountered on this car so far.
138275
Old carpet out with all the sun discoloring.
138276
How I left my interior project that day after working in the garage for longer than I should of haha.
138277
finally onto some motor assembly:
Soaking the ls7 lifters before installation
138278
Cleaning up the deck surface before the head install
138279
Lifters installed, new headgaskets on, and my 853 heads with arp bolts all on. Starting to actually look like an engine!
138280
Garage all cleaned up and the monte back in one piece. Happy with the progress that got done this week and hope to update with new updates in the coming week. Thanks guys! Appreciate any and all feedback from you guys.

New update for you guys and finally got a sizeable one! Ive been busy the last 2 weeks getting the monte's body work up to par and spending endless hours sanding. Pictures will follow!
Before getting into the body pics just wanted to show the small update on the engine, got my valley cover from ict billet as I will be going with a carb and do not need the provisions for knock sensors.

Started with the car being complete and 95% painted still on Saturday morning and this is the progression of body work and sanding throughout the day.

After bodyworking and sanding the car all week I finally got to a point this last weekend that I could get the car in primer. I hung some clear plastic around the garage ceiling to create my own make shift paint booth and to cut down on dust and overspray around the garage. It seemed to work out great for how low buck the whole operation is.

Thats all for now, I noticed a few small areas that need a bit more work once I got the car in primer so im still working on getting the body 100% and then ill be shooting paint in the next couple of weeks!
