Which VIN?

I was tossing around the idea of doing a classic truck body on a modern 4x4 truck frame, suspension/engine/tranny.

In my search I found a couple of possible donors but they had salvage titles, and that led to the question "Which VIN would go with the truck? The old one, or the new one, and why?"

Hmm good question, might be best to check with local government. If it doesn't matter then I'd say go with the body . That's what would be the first identifier of a vehicle visually. Plus might get you a cheaper rate for insurance and such

My guess is Body. VIN will match the build year on title and Registration. You would get some weird looks if you got pulled over and your paperwork says 2005 and your body is 1966.

depends on the state....some will require a state issued VIN(assembled or homemade etc) which makes insurance a PITA. after all, you are indeed creating a vehicle that Detroit didn't.
that said, if you are an individual, not a shop, you will most likely be fine with the body VIN as long as you didn't alter the existing body VIN plate in any way.
as far as insurance goes, as long as you insure it with a collector car outfit like Grundy & don't pass it off as stock you will be OK.
here in NC, the DMV is a complete unreasonable PITA, it would be considered homemade & get a state issued VIN, a long drawn out process. I have a few examples for the asking, but won't bore you with the details.

The old VIN that is correct for the body.

A chassis swap is not illegal.

A VIN swap on a body is illegal!

Yeah dont open a can of worms for yourself, get a body with a matching vin and title and do what you want. But check you local laws for transfer of the title. Here in NC you have to have a vin verification done if it is a out of state title . The vehicle has to be complete and at least look road worthy to be titled...and if you have changed the chassis it may end up special const ....yeah as mentioned above ncdmv is a pita!

Thanks guys. Apparently my wife is first in line for the next project. Something about me not needing two "fun" cars before she gets one.

When the time is right, I'll find a classic truck body with good title/VIN. I just want to be able to pull the trigger on a modern Salvage truck engine/chassis if something comes along that's too good to pass up.
