Finally deciding to share my project on the forum. I have made some posts on here but haven't gotten around to sharing my stuff. My car is a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am 400 4spd. It has the correct final year production 400 engine and the rest of the drivetrain in it. Although I'm modifying my far from stock, I do plan on trying make it appear like a factory built car.
Here is how I built it about 5 years ago....

Picked up an Edelbrock Super Victor 4500 EFI intake for Pontiac engines off another forum. This intake has received a lot of work. I had to grind the outside of the plenum just for it to accept the throttle body. After that, I found the throttle blades were contacting the plenum pad so I had to port match the throttle body to the manifold. The throttle body is a 4500 dominator style from FAST. I'm also using their whole FAST XFI 2.0 system, ignition, distributor, etc. Here is a quick overview of the transformation.

Another setup I'm working on is installing '87 GTA Trans Am seats. These seats offer adjustable headrest, electronically controlled lumbar, recline, lower cushion adjustment and rear cargo net. '79 and '87 both offered carmine red interior so this luckily turns out to be a close match for me. I still need to work out some issue with mounting the seats but I have a general idea of how it will install.

Figuring out where to mount the ignition box and ecu required a lot of thought but I think I found a good spot under the console. I welded in some mounting brackets to space the ecu and box off the tunnel but still keep it under the console.

For suspension, this was also another debate on where I should go with the car. I ended up deciding on sticking with a leaf spring set up. I've seen mixed reviews on Hotchkis but I'm going to try them out. I only have their rear sway bar, leafs and Fox shocks.

Thanks Ripper! I have this car on a few other forums under a different username. I've been on the PY, TAC and some other forums for a while but this year I logged into Pro-Touring and Yellowbullet. It's cool seeing the original stuff but these forums offer a lot more fabrication and engineering knowledge. I just stumbled upon your car through your profile link...looks great!

Been following some of the threads on this forum pertaining to swapping on 4th generation '98-'02 F-Body brakes. Some refer to this as the LS1 brake setup. I picked up two sets of brakes and I'm using both driver side "L" assemblies to work with the old style staggered shock orientation.
I also picked up a set of spacers from BRP Hot Rods to work with the old style 8.5" 10 bolt. Here's a link to the spacers if anyone else is interested in this kind of setup...
http://www.brphotrods.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=BRP&Product_Code=012-3400-00&Category_Code=BRK12F
Here's a pic of the initial mockup but I'm still waiting for the BRP spacers to come in the mail. Once the spacers are in, I will be taking the rear to someone local for a rebuild. I tried to set up the rear end myself but I think it's best to have a professional do it at this point.

Great build! I have the same feelings about resto-modding these cars....I'm not into crazy body mods or wild paint jobs. I like an original looking car, that's been updated under the skin!
Where did you source your LS brakes from? Are you doing the same for the fronts as well?
I've been searching for 6+ months for a 8.5 10 bolt for my '68, but haven't had any luck yet. I had plans for C5 brakes up front, and LS brakes in the rear, but I'm going to keep my eye on the for sale thread for your stock discs. Seems like a great, inexpensive way to upgrade from my drums!

I picked up a set of brakes from a '99 Trans Am off craigslist and my second set was from ebay. The '99 brakes came off a low mile car that got Brembo brakes swapped on. I even received this setup with the original GM pads and Rotors. I will modify my previous post later as I can provide more pictures.
The stock discs from my car are listed for sale on a couple forums and there's some interest but I haven't posted any pics anywhere. This is a great bolt on setup for those who are running 15" wheels or want something they can pick up parts for at a local parts store for cheap. You also don't have to mess around with emergency brake setups because this works with old style factory equipment.
I will also be selling two passenger "R" side '98-'02 F-Body brakes I have right now as well. With two R assemblies on an early 10 bolt rear end, this will position the passenger caliper towards the front of the car and the driver side caliper towards the rear. The reason for this is that on a 4th gen F-Body, both driver "L" and passenger "R" side calipers are clocked towards the front of the vehicle. I've seen on another forum where some have used the standard "L" and "R" assemblies but relocated the passenger shock 1-1.5" on the shock plate to clear the caliper and it works. I chose the two "L" assembly route to run on opposing sides of the shock like my original setup. This is mainly the issue 2nd gen ('70-'81) F-Body owners have to deal with when using this setup.
For '67-'69 F-Body, BRP makes an inward mounted shock kit so that makes it possible for 1st gen owners to clock 4th gen brakes in any orientation. With a setup like this, you can position the brakes in standard 4th gen "L/R" configuration. I would say narrowing down your choice here would be how you want to operate the emergency brake lever. In order to get the emergency brake lever to pull forward on this brake assembly, some may want to consider using the R caliper on the passenger side and L on the driver side. Here's link to the inward shock mount kit for 1st gen owners...

Ah!
Yea, my passenger shock is in front of the axle, and driver side is behind the axle, so I'll have to do my research before pulling the trigger. I'm trying to hold off and tackle one issue at a time, right now being suspension, or else I'd be too tempted to go nuts buying a bunch of stuff! haha

Made some progress with regards to getting the rear end complete. I ended up taking my housing to the person who assembled my engine. I was going to do it myself initially but went this route and it ended up being a great decision for me. Again this is the original 8.5 10 bolt rear end from my car. Here's the list of what's being done to it.
-Moser 30 spline axles
-Eaton Detroit Truetrac carrier
-Strange Engineering 1350 driveshaft yoke
-Crush sleeve eliminator
-'98-'02 F-Body brakes (BRP Hot Rods adapter bracket)
-Axle tubes fully welded to center section
-Custom length wheel studs

The ones in stock were a bit long so we cut them to fit. Aftermarket wheel, new style rotors and lug nuts change from setup to setup. I might change lug nuts so we'll see what happens here.

Again, same boat here. My new US Mag Bandit wheels, and disc brake conversion will definitely require longer studs. Seems there are some standard lengths to go with, like M12X1.5 APR press in, but I'm more worried about finding lug nuts that will secure my wheels properly! Unless I'm over thinking that...haha

Measure your wheels then pick the most fitting lug nuts. Choose the stud that matches your lug nut afterwards.

Seems simple enough!
I just don't know how well I can choose without physically holding and/or fitting the lug nut to my wheel in person, vs. ordering them online? Seems like something Summit would have, but you can't just browse through their selection at the store...it's all in the back and the employees bring the parts up to you after you've paid for them.

Finally made it the point of installing the rear end and Hotchkis leaf springs. Without the gas tank, bumper, exhaust, lights and everything else, the rear is already lower than the front. Next step will be adjusting my solid body mounts to the drop setting so that the body can sit lower on the frame up front. I plan on switching to a shorter 275/40 17 tire to lower the car further once the funds are there.

I had a rather short call with them...not sure if it was Tobin that I spoke with. I just ordered the parts really quick and asked a couple questions. I'm in debate on how I want to go about my front brakes. I want to use the matching '98-'02 F-Body front brakes with the Kore3 hub but they don't offer a bracket for that caliper. Looks like I have to study my options more at this point.
Nice car by the way. I just glanced through your thread.

FWIW, the C5 setup has been a cake walk for me....really incredible how simple it is to add 13" disc brakes to a 48 year old vehicle! If these didn't work out for me, I would have tried the LS front brakes next though. I know they've been ran on first gen F-bodies too, can't imagine they haven't been done on 2nd gens over the years? Or did you mean that since Kore3 doesn't offer a bracket, that you're looking elsewhere now?

Kore3 doesn't offer an LS1 F-Body caliper bracket. Their hub will accept the brake disc though. I might just run their Vette stuff.
Custom Works has a hub kit that I'm considering. Not aluminum like the Kore3 piece but it's designed around that brake.
CPP kit looks really cool but has mixed internet review due to the Corvette hub.

After doing some testing and comparing the Hotchkis sway bars with Dave @ Pro-Touring F-Body, I ended up selling the Hotchkis parts and bought an adjustable PTFB high clearance sway bar. The Hotchkis sway bars were nice but after testing, it proved to be about as strong as a factory WS6 sway bar but created less inboard tire/wheel clearance. The Pro-Touring F-Body sway bar is stronger and also has some very nice end links. Here are some pictures showing the comparison between a Hotchkis sway bar and PTFB's adjustable high clearance sway bar. You can see how the PTFB bar is pitched in more to allow for more tire/wheel clearance and also has a highly adjustable end link with bearings.

Since I ended up switching to the Pro-Touring F-Body sway bar, I've been consulting with Dave(79T/A man)@Pro-Touring F-Body and John Paige (NOT A TA) to further develop my front suspension. We ended up deciding that I pull my whole subframe out and do a whole build at the Pro-Touring F-Body shop since I live nearby. Over the next few weeks I'll be posting some pictures and doing a write-up as it progresses. This is going to be as good as it gets for building a factory 2nd gen subframe!
The following modifications will be done to the subframe...
-Pro-Touring F-Body coil-over install kit
-Pro-Touring F-Body upper control arms
-Pro-Touring F-Body lower control arms (built for coil-over only)
-Pro-Touring F-Body adjustable sway bar
-Pro-Touring F-Body sway bar brace
-ViKing double-adjustable coil-over shocks
-John Paige (NOT A TA) upper control arm adjustable supports
-John Paige (NOT A TA) lower control arm frame reinforcement kit
-John Paige (NOT A TA) body mount frame reinforcement kit
-John Paige (NOT A TA) sway bar mount upgrade

I wish you would have done this sooner lol. I am doing all the exact same things to my car. I am also doing the 1LE brake upgrade with wilwood calipers. I will hopefully be completed with mine this weekend. Would have been nice to follow someone's write up in lieu of trying to figure it all out myself.

That's cool, you should be happy once yours is done. I have been very fortunate recently to work with Dave@Pro-Touring F-Body and forum member John Paige (NOT A TA). Both are helping me out big time with moving this project forward. Part of my reason for posting my build online is just to show what can be done when you use the original drivetrain and apply updated parts. My car still has the original engine block, transmission and rear end. The original subframe and leaf spring suspension will be retained as well. I will try to make the subframe build as detailed as possible so others and yourself can see how certain modifications are completed.
Hope your build progresses well and fast rreichert82!

I've done most of the same with PTFB parts on my TA though I went DSE from the firewall back. Still waiting on a few parts from Dave but all the welding for the coilover conversion has long been done and just waiting on some new LCAs to go with the coilovers sitting on the shelf. I have original PTFB upper and lower tubular control arms but then decided to do the coilover conversion so Dave is swapping out the lowers. Using Willwood 6Ps Superlites and 14" rotors. I can send pics anytime or you can check the build thread at Lateral-g.
I may start one over here at some point but just haven't gotten around to it.

I've seen your build over on TAC a while back. That thing is put together very well! I'm trying to look for stuff on your build to give me ideas because it's a lot different than what I currently have going on. Curious, do you still have those d port shorty headers for sale that were on TAC? I sent a message a LONG time ago but got no response. I'm still up in the air as to what kind of exhaust I'm doing. Once I get back to working on the engine, I'll have to debate between modifying the iron heads myself, KRE D port or KRE high port...KRE high port would be most preferred at the end of the day.

I do have them. Funny. I need to sell a bunch of stuff like that just laying around but never seem to get around to them. I need to take care of my Pontiac brothers. I have another guy on Performance years wanting a breather I have no need for. Finding the time to ship stuff was always difficult but I now have a guy just up the street who will box it and ship it if I just drop it off. That solves a lot of time issues for me. If you still want them I'll get them out. I now have a pretty good idea of what I will need to keep for my build, which is almost nothing stock so I have several TA's worth of parts laying around.
I've done a bunch of TA now and have built enough Pontiac motors to have a decent idea of what to do first. I'd go aluminum head if you can. It's by far the best way to get the most bang for your buck from a Pontiac engine. The guys at Butler and SD have it down to a science. They can match one of their custom grind cams and get you 500+ HP in short order without breaking the bank. If I had one thing to splurge on in the entire car, that would be it.

I stealing this idea! There is a lot of room up under the dash that goes unused.
Got the coil hidden inside of the car this week. This ended turning out to be a nice install as well.
Mounted the coil to throttle bracket...

Absolutely no issue here with stealing the coil mounting idea. It's a simple but you have figure where to place the igntion box as well. A/C vs Non A/C bodies will change the method of attack. This was one of my favorite modifications but I'm actually debating on moving the ignition box and computer.
Doug1
07-02-2016, 03:15 PM
No. I wouldn't mount the ignition box or computer there either. Strictly like it for a coil location. I mounted my last MSD box in the glove box so I could get to it easily. I'll most likely go the same route with this car if I don't mount it under the console. I'll be making a relay panel that I need to mount somewhere and had planned on going on the console. We'll see since I probably need to build a custom console after raising the tunnel.
I will be installing a vintage air system but it still leave a lot more room than the factory system without all those big plastic ducts.

A small update today that I'm pretty excited about is finding a nice set of GTA rear seats that match the front seats. What's cool about these seats is that they can fold down, match the front seat design and overall interior color. From what I have found, '87 was the only year you could get GTA seats in carmine red and this happens to be the same color that was used in '79. Please disregard the severely faded carpet and beat up interior panels ;) These aren't bolt-in so I will have to fab up some mounts for the lower cushion mount, hinge and latch setup. The seat back also doesn't sit flush against the trunk block off panel so I will have to modify that some as well.

I actually really like the late 2nd Gen seats. They are very comfortable and look nice but the later 3rd/4th Gen seats do have a lot more offerings. I know yours might be a little bit of an older design so I can't disagree with you on your opinion.

KEV 190164, I just want to be sure you know that these seats are not a quick install.
-Sliders don't interchange so you will have to figure out how to mount the front seats.
-The trunk block off panel will need to be cut and modified for the seat back to sit flush.
-Mounts for the hinges and latch will need to be fabricated for the rear seat back if you want the fold down mechanism to work.
-Mounts for the lower rear cushion will need to be made because those seats are held in by bolts.

I randomly fell upon chasing down a new set of wheels. The 17x9 snowflakes were awesome but I felt that I wanted something different and sold them. Last year I was looking at lightweight forged big wheels but after swapping to third gen seats, I began looking at later style Pontiac wheels. I thought maybe the new 17x9 GTA wheels would look cool but then I found these. They're replica wheels of what came on the '91-'92 SLP Firehawk. They only built 25 of those cars and thought it match what I'm doing with my car.
Also, with these wheels, I think I'm going with the Pro-Touring F-Body 12" A.X. brake kit. I took the wheels to the shop and Dave found that the 13" brake kit will fit but are extremely tight and I would need to run a spacer. The 12" brakes are lighter, cheaper and fit better so I'm going with that for now. Once we get those parts together, I'll post some more pictures.
My next debates are what tires to go with. Here are my options...
1) 285/40 17 all around
-Small selection of summer performance tires only.
-Tallest tire of this group.
2) 275/40 17 all around
-Cheaper prices available.
-More tire types available (all season, summer, racing slicks)
3) 275/40 17 in front with 315/35 17 rear
-Requires spacers and wheel widening in the rear.
-Can be cheap or can be expensive depending on rear tire selection.

Thanks man. I'm right there with you on the penny pinching project. The wheels aren't the best for being light but are low priced, look awesome and are true to Pontiac styling. Many of the parts on my car have been purchased from forums, 2nd hand new, etc. I was looking at all the big name brands that sponsor this forum for suspension but I'm extremely happy to be going with Pro-Touring F-Body. Dave has a great handle on geometry and what works for a good price. I'm just trying the best I can to keep progressing until it runs.

Been almost 4 months since I've posted any updates to my build thread. Have had a lot go on since August. Got married, started a new job, picked up a '98 LS1 T/A, and have made some big changes with the direction of my build with the '79....again.
-Sold the FAST efi setup and am now switching building a Megasquirt system.
-Sold the VFN fiberglass good and purchased a stock style shaker hood.
-Sold the port injection Victor intake and purchased an old school Holley Street Dominator intake. Going TBI this time around.
-Ordered the matching front wheels this past week.
-Got back to working on the subframe at the Pro-Touring F-Body shop this week. I never posted any pictures before but it was primed about a month ago. The passenger side coil-over mount was just installed and the driver side mount should be finished this upcoming week.
Will post pictures soon.

Recent updates.
Suspension....I've bought a new frame locally to work on for my car after waiting and waiting for Dave at PTFB to supply my coilover suspension, lower control arms, g-braces, sway bar brace, etc. I paid him in full a year ago, have not received my parts and the business has moved to Tennessee. I've tried numerous times to get him to finish what I paid him for but every week there's a new story or excuse. It's just a shame because I know him as a friend and I've helped work in the shop a lot this past year but I just don't think he will finish my stuff at this point. I am now trying out Global West for suspension.
Engine...I recently acquired two 454 TBI's and a '81 301 Turbo HEI distributor. I am using the '81 301 turbo distributor because it's a 7-wire computer controlled HEI (no weights/spring/vacuum can). Currently, the distributor is being gone through by a specialist in that area. Once the distributor gets back, I plan on sending the 454 TBI to Sean at SPR Performance so he can bore out the throttle body and modify it so I can run an external fuel pressure regulator

Exterior/Body...Just traded my shaker hood for a 301 Turbo hood from an '81. I'm going to try and graft in a 3rd gen '82-'84 cowl induction setup because the hood bulge is the same between 2nd-3rd gen. It's stupid that this is now my 4th hood for the car but I feel very excited about this one.

Welded in a set of Lab-14 sway bar reinforcement plates. I highly recommend these after my experience last year. Last year, I was tightening up a Hotchkis sway bar and ended up stripping the threads in the frame. These plates have a nut welded to them so it creates a very strong bolting point for the sway bar. Please excuse my welding if it doesn't look pretty. I've never had any professional teach me and I only have a couple jobs under my belt.

Also got around to installing a set of Lab-14 body mount reinforcement plates. These are pretty cool. I just noticed today that with a sleeved body mount like the PTFB mounts I have, they insure that the sleeve stays inside the bore. These plates should make for a nice clamp on the frame to keep it locked to the body and reinforce the metal in this area. I was speaking with John at Lab-14 recently to see if he has plans to make a similar plate for the rear body mount under the seat pan...hopefully that part becomes available soon.

Too bad about the issues with PTFB. Hopefully you will make out ok.
I'm just starting from scratch with a new frame at this point. It's hard for me to continue waiting for my PTFB order because I'm actually friends with Dave. I helped work in the shop this past year and I know there's been plenty of free time for him to finish my suspension but he didn't do it. I even paid him money to do side projects for my 4th gen but that fell through as well. I'm salty about it but I'm moving on and letting him do his thing. It's a shame because I'm not moving because I'm getting anything better...I'm just trying to get parts so I can assemble and work on my car.
For anyone else who is just the normal customer, I still recommend PTFB only when he says he actually has a part in stock and ready to ship same day. Other than that, hold your money.

Not much done to the car today but I was happy seeing my welds on the Lab-14 mounts look a little nicer after using a wire wheel to clean them up. I still have to grind down these areas a small amount so that the sway bar clamps and PTFB solid body mounts are able to flat and tight on the frame.

A little side-by-side of the Global West uppers vs. PTFB uppers. A member from this forum bought the PTFB upper from me today. I will be shipping those out to the new owner tomorrow.

On a side note, I did speak with Dave from PTFB the other day. He called me and said he's a few weeks out from shipping some parts to me. It was nice of him to sound positive about getting my parts completed but we'll see what happens. I don't want to get overly excited on that subject. There's been many stories of holdups between suppliers, tools, materials, and shop utilities at this point.

Good news on the PTFB front. Dave finally got around to contacting me. He said he's broken a couple phones over the past couple months and was unable to communicate. Besides communication issues, he said he is getting the shelves stocked up with parts for his new location reopening.
On my car, me and Dave working out a deal to finish off the rear suspension and brakes because I bought the Global West setup. For now, I'm holding off on doing the PTFB setup on my '79 subframe. He still has some designing to finish with his new lower control arms and by avoiding this, it gives him more time to work things out with that. The '78 subframe will be used for now with the Global West control arms, hybrid coil-over, stock ws6 sway bar, PTFB brake kit and Turn One steering box. Hopefully within the next 2 months, I will be making a lot of progress with getting my suspension/brakes sorted out.

Sorry, but if a vendor, or a "friend" was treating me like you have been treated, I would never talk or deal with them again. You paid in advance (mistake) and haven't gotten parts? Really?!?!
Dave broke some phones and couldn't communicate? Really?!?

Yes Andrew, I paid Dave up front just like any other vendor. Not single out PTFB, but I've been having a funny time with Global West as of late.
My credit card info was stolen before right before they tried to charge me for the lowers and coil overs. They called and left me messages saying they're holding my parts and that I should pay them. After a long story, I got a new card after 2+ weeks and paid them two Fridays ago but have yet to receive lower control arms from them. I called them this Friday (the following Friday) and now they're saying next Friday. Fine, no big deal, all good at this point my current thought...it was originally my issue of not being able to pay them upfront. I did however tell them that they can ship and I will pay once I got my new card. They didn't want to do it that way though. It has turned into me paying them and not receiving my stuff yet. After waiting a year for PTFB, I can wait a few weeks for Global West to do what they do.
Here's where I'm at odds with the Global West sales/customer service...at this point it's been about a month and I've been trying to get this tech guy to answer my questions on what they're doing with these new extended travel control arms. I've been told 3 different stories by them over the past two weeks. When I got through my credit card issue and paid them, I was told that the stuff won't ship right away because they're making adjustments to the arms. I said, "that's fine but can you please explain to me what you guys are doing?" They said they would call back and figure it out...they didn't call me back. I called them a few days later to ask again and they then told me the control arms have stock style bump stop and ball joint mounting points and there's no adjustment being made. I called them a few days later and then this same tech guy told me that these control arms now have revised framing and bump stop location. When my order wasn't shipped according to their deadline, I called to see what was going on and asked again about the subject and have gotten a new story. The new story is that they're working on their jig to make building the arms easier.
I'm just trying make moves with progressing on my project but I have to say buying suspension and brakes has been the craziest thing I've dealt with for this car. With my limited budget to finish other parts of my car, I can only get so "mad" at others. Even if they provide me the suspension this week, I still have plenty other things to finish that I can't currently afford.

Last month, I sent my distributor out to PY member Sun Tuned for a rebuild/service. He said he's been busy with orders so it took him some time but these are some pictures he sent me today. I'm very glad I sent it to him after seeing that he's addressing a few issues with it.

Did a little fitting with the new Global West control arms and finally got around to installing my Lab-14 lower control arm reinforcement plates. I must say, the control arm tool from Lab-14 was a big help in getting this done smoothly! Also if anyone else gets these plates, just FYI, you may need grind down the edges slightly so that they fit the frame better. Either way the fit is great and they really do appear to strengthen this area.

Thank you for those who have followed, influenced and helped me with my project up until this point.

Yeah. That sucks. I just got hit the other day after seeing it happen to other people. I have build threads going back YEARS on SEVERAL sites I no longer frequent. I think I'm going to switch to Google photos and update a couple of recent threads, but leave the others how they are. I feel like they should have just done a "From now on" kinda thing. Kinda crappy.

That sucks your '76 and the threads for it are pretty much done now. I'll probably do Flickr or something else eventually. It'll probably be easier for me to start new a build thread at that time. For now, I'm just going to lay low with posting about my car. Progress with my project has been slow for budget reasons lately anyways. I'm sure you know what I mean there.
I have a Facebook page called F-Body International if you want to check that out. It's not much but I have some of my build there still. I update it here and there but not as much as the forums. Much of my pictures are lost to Photobucket and old phones I don't have anymore.

After +6 months of my original pictures being disabled, I have finally went in and fixed my old posts.
Since I stopped posting on this thread, I've pretty much been cleaning out my inventory so I can start my build over again. Some people on here must think I'm crazy after so many ideas and parts being gone through. Over this past month, I've sold my PTFB subframe/suspension, BOP valley pan, Holley intake, SPR TBI, and some other things. Last month I decided to pull the trigger on going back to school to get a Master's degree so I'm pretty much back to being a broke college kid. On my daily driver '98 Trans Am, I've had issues with brakes developing a leak, engine overheated 1 day and check engine light just came on. Since that has been popping up, that car is getting a new set or brakes, full exhaust, wheels and some other maintenance related items over this upcoming month.
Amongst all the crazy expenditures (atleast for my budget) of school and repair/upgrades on the daily, I did pick up a couple parts for my '79 this week.
-On Craigslist, I found a good condition '78 iron intake manifold along with a good condition stock valley pan.
-On Facebook, I found a 454 TBI that came with a NOS nitrous plate.
Here's the story behind the TBI that I just picked up. The guy who had it got off a truck he bought from a lady. Apparently her son went to jail so she pretty much sold the truck to him for pennies. Since he had converted it to carburetor, I asked him about the TBI and he said he wasn't sure about the condition so he said he'd give it to me for free because he'd feel bad selling something with problems. For $22 shipping, I ended up giving him $25 total for his honesty and me taking a risk on an unknown item.
Since I got it on Friday, I've disassembled it, soaked some parts in CLR and reassembled hand tight. Once I get around to selling some more of my extra parts, I'll probably send this one off to SPR Performance so that it can get modified like the other one I had done.

Terrible looking picture here but I have degreased and brushed a lot of grime off this this thing. I tried doing this with CLR and it didn't work too well. I pretty much just figured out that it's a great home cleaning product for calcium, lime and rust like the bottle says but it's not good for greasy car parts. Either way, I still made process with it. I may try it over again with Evapo Rust just to see how that works.

I've been following along with all your for sale threads. I remembered all you did to this car, so I was shocked when I saw all this stuff being parted out! haha But, priorities are priorities....we've all been there.
I dropped a lifter on my '68 towards the end of the season, so I'm going to park it for a few years while I build up the knowledge and funds for the total drivetrain and suspension overhaul it desperately needs. lol Funny you mention your daily is a 4th gen though, cause I'm thinking about getting one so me and the family can tool around while the '68 is down for the count! lol A friend at work is selling his '99 Trans Am for around $3500....all it's worth with 145k mi. I figured that's cheap, t-top off, fun for the time being. Then if I choose, I can take what I need for my LS swap (decided on that route) in the '68, and part out the rest of the car. At least then I'll know what I'm getting in a used drivetrain, vs. buying an engine and trans sitting on the floor of some random guy's garage that he said "ran good before pulled".

Thanks Josh! I know you've always been one of the fans on this thread. Much appreciated to say the least! Sorry to hear about your bird. Get that '99 Trans Am if you can. Many people want '99-'02 for the later style computer.
At this point, I'm planning on using bolt-on GM parts for the most part but have some slight modifications here and there that I would like to do. I'll still make it a pretty fun project overall but it'll mostly be on an affordable budget. All the expensive hoopdy-doo stuff just started getting ridiculous in cost. Now that you bring up me selling stuff, I just sold the nitrous plate that came with this TBI. I would've like to play with the nitrous plate but atleast this took care of the cost for my getting my TBI. Nitrous would've just developed another cost on my end unfortunately.

Huge fan of using GM parts too. You were one of the people that helped me get my rear LS brake setup done!
Even though it's "just" a lifter at this point, a part of me wants to just get the whole engine rebuilt because I don't think it's ever been done, and it's certainly tired and leaky at this point. And, by the time I pull the cam to inspect for damage, half the engine is apart anyway. But, the trans has been leaking for a year, and spilled half the fluid on the floor after I parked it for the winter, so now would be a good time to upgrade to a 4sp OD. Then EFI for obvious benefits, and we're already at $5,000 or more. Might as well pull the subframe to clean and weld it up, then I might as well get the suspension done too while everything is apart......and things snowball quickly!
I've got a midnight shift at work again this spring, so it'll give me ample time to get some reading done on all this stuff. In the mean time, hopefully I wouldn't go too overboard modding the Trans Am! Typical car guy, I can't leave anything alone! Maybe a used exhaust off craigslist for the tone, drop springs for the look, intake, stereo....little things....hopefully. haha Again, it could spiral out of control quickly!
Got any pics of yours?

-Disassembled
-Primered
-Painted OER brand chassis black
-Waterproof grease applied to the steel sleeve and inside of the pucks

I'll have to remember the grease part. I've had a set of BMR mounts for 2 years now, but haven't gotten around to installing them. Figured it'd be best to do it when I overhauled the drivetrain and suspension...no point in doing things twice. lol

Yes, applying grease will help keep things quiet and reduce the chance of corrosion. BMR makes body mounts out of Delrin if I recall. I'm not sure if I would trust Delrin for a body mount application but if it works, then I don't really have much to say against it. I think I heard about someone have a Delrin body mount crack but I haven't searched on the subject. I'm sure install error could've played a part of that story that was relayed to me one time.

Damn man...you gotta drag that beautiful car through snow and salt like that? I thought when you said you had one as a DD, you were from a warmer place. lol
I saw a white 4th gen Trans Am with blue stripes just today when I dropped my daughter off for school. Single digit temps and snow/slush all over the roads....I wept a little inside.
Sucks but is what is now. I tried selling it for a while but not one person ever came to look or even make an offer. For the price of me doing maintenance on this car, it’s stupid for me to sell for what people want to pay.
I would simply buy a $3,000 winter beater and sell after the spring.

Considering everyone willing to pay only want to pay $3000-$4000 for these cars, it’s just not worth the sell. I couldn’t even get anyone to look at the car when it was listed at $6k.

I was surprised to find out what these 4th gens go for with average mileage. Low mileage ones with under 50K still seem to be getting 5 digit prices, but 150K mi ones aren't worth a whole lot. That's why I'm considering buying my friend's for $3500...not trying to low ball him, but that's all KBB says a 99 Trans Am with almost 150K is worth!

Yea, they're dirt cheap these days. I'm glad I got mine but I think people are selling good ones for way too cheap. Might as well buy it if he's willing to sell it to you. I just crossed 150k myself but I have a lot going in for upgrade repair/soon. I'll continue that on this thread soon enough.

Some more updates for my '98.
When I got the new wheels mounted up at my local Goodyear shop this week, they notified me that my passenger outer tie rod was a little loose. Because of that, I just placed an order for a set of Proforged inner tie rods and a Midwest Chassis bump steer kit (https://midwestchassis.com/products/93-02-f-body-bump-steer-kit-using-stock-power-steering-rack). After I get this installed and do an alignment, hopefully that should improve steering. Steering insn't bad but I imagine this will help.
Finally got to spend the time this weekend to install my Strano Performance Parts front brake kit (http://www.stranoparts.com/partdetails.php?ModelID=7&PartID=1354) that's been sitting my garage since the end of November while I had my wheel ordering ordeal. My initial impressions are great. The car stops much smoother from higher speeds than before.
Some words of advice....if you're trying to install new flex lines on a car with old brake lines, get yourself a little torch if you don't have one! Heat helps big time for helping old parts come apart! Also, read the directions carefully! I was a dumb*** yesterday and broke a bolt because I misread a torque spec. Thankfully nothing was damaged and it was a cheap replacement.
Here's a simple write-up of how to install these brakes on a 4th gen.
Before picture from the other day when I just got the wheels...

Step 1 - Disassemble the brakes, pull the wheel hub off and cut the spindle as pictured. Before reassembling everything, make sure to clean the mounting surfaces....again, as pictured.

Step 2 - Put the mounting bracket on (caliper faces towards rear), slip the rotor on, install the caliper and plumb up the new braided hose. Make sure to follow proper torque specs. After that's done, bleed the system.

Thanks Ryan! The way it works is through a UMI C5/C6 Vette brake conversion bracket. Strano then supplies the Wilwood (Vette based) caliper and line. They have some type of business arrangement between each other as UMI sells some Strano part while Strano sells some UMI parts.

I hear you. They’re BFG’s so I could see where the confusion might be. The car has been driving pretty good with them but I’m not really trying to beat on my daily driver too hard so I unfortunately can’t give you a full performance report on it. Once I get the suspension and some other things repaired or rebuilt, then I’ll think about getting more into spirited driving. If 4th gens are driven enough, the hollow front sway bars like to break by the end link. My front sway bar is actually cracked and broken on both sides where it connects to the end links...that will have to get addressed eventually but for now, it doesn’t effect everyday driving for me. I’ll be posting up progress on my ‘98 once the exhaust and a few other items go in.

Got some updates in regards to the '79. My wife and I just purchased a small townhouse so I will be forced to get my car back on 4 wheels in order to move it.
My built W72 engine was given away by a family member to cover a personal debt. Long story that ticked me off...my engine was pretty much stolen lightly. After my engine ordeal, I sold my Pontiac EFI parts and ended up buying a 4.8 "LS" engine from a truck. I'm a Pontiac guy through-and-through, but I got a 4.8 LS engine with computer and a 2nd gen rear end delivered to my house for $525...got a real good deal there after being ripped off. I know the picture is pretty "bare" below, but I have all the wiring, intake, exhaust, etc. The header's are for my '98 so please disregard that ;)

Picked up a set of 16x8 Convex '84-'86 Trans Am wheels for $80 in order to move my car. I just got them as rollers but I think I will try to run them now. With some research, I found these wheels started on the '84 15th Anniversary Trans Am, were used in '85-'86 for T/A and then phased out of production on '87 Formula cars. After seeing "Made in Germany" on the inside of the wheel, I think these are much cooler now. I was surprised by that...assumed these wheels would've been built elsewhere.

Been a while since I posted about my '98 Trans Am but I traded it for a truck last year due to me moving to a townhouse and this weekend I got it back from the person who had it. The car unfortunately got really messed up while out of my hands but I'm starting the process of getting it back to normal.

First step was going to the junkyard. An LKQ by me had a '97 Firebird so I went and got the seats, rear view mirror, passenger door switch panel, door hardware and it even had a Metra 2 DIN radio adapter. With the labor day sale, I spent a whopping $75 out the door and $3 entrance fee.

I debated on not doing it because I know that it will slow me down with progress on the ‘79. What happened was I bought a complete LS1 for my ‘79 T/A last week and the guy with the purple car ended up posting the engine/transmission for sale the same day. He was about to part the car out! I asked how much for the whole car and after a conversation, I ended up trading him the engine and some swap parts I just bought for the ‘79.

Hey guys,
Been a while since I've posted about the '79 on this thread...once again. So many stories since last year.
LS1 story..........
This year I purchased an LS1 to have an engine shop build and set the 4.8 aside in the garage. After going through some big purchasing, the owner of the shop I was trying to work with ended up making a big fit with me on the phone about deciding to get the heads ported and purchasing a camshaft. The moment that happened, I decided to stop the process and pulled the LS1 out of the shop. I didn't want to do business with the guy anymore. Absolute rip-off. Paid $5,000 for assembly, machining and dyno time. Once I decided to pull out, they decided to order pistons/rods and overcharge me labor time for work they did not do. If anyone lives in Illinois area, stay away from Speed Performance Engineering in Wauconda, IL. Absolute rip-off artist. I'm now returning or selling off all the parts that were intended for that build. Shame as it was hovering $10,000 between everything at that point. Losing thousands on this failure but I just have to take it on the chin and move on.
4.8 story........
After getting ripped off bad by that shop with the LS1 I was trying to build, I decided to clean up the 4.8 that I had sitting in the garage. Before when I had found glass inside the piston cylinders, I was fairly not motivated and that I was why I coughed up coin to build and aluminum block instead. After cleaning the engine up and posting on Facebook, a friend of mine said he'd buy it. The engine is going to be featured in coming episodes for his YouTube channel and Facebook page. Foy's Automotive.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQG3AFJcXKY
Pontiac 400........
I never really voiced this on the forums but my 400 engine was actually used by some close people I know to pay off someone's theft debt. I won't go into details over forum but my engine got ripped off by some very close people. I always knew who had the engine but I was on bad terms with this person and basically stayed out of the sour subjects of others. That's why I started working on putting together an LS engine. After all this stuff happened with the LS engines, the guy who had my 400 engine started going through an ugly divorce. I personally never wanted to pay money towards the guy for problems that I was not involved and, thus, never expected to see this engine again but I really didn't want to see anything bad happen to it so I called and asked if I could buy it. Couldn't believe I was paying money for an engine that was pretty much stolen from me but I really wanted to keep the original engine with the car. Here I am with a restart, yet again, on the original 400...

Car Article Feature...........
This past month I was contacted by a writer named Tommy Parry from HotRodHotline about doing a feature on my car. I was a bit surprised because my car is currently not in the condition I was expecting to be asked for a feature but I reluctantly said yes. After sending him some information about myself, why I'm into the project and other questions, he developed a draft. I approved it but I also conveyed that I have a different direction I'm going with the car than what is currently posted online. With that discussion, he said he would be interested in doing another follow-up article in the future. Hopefully I can be ready fairly soon for that. I really have some neat ideas planned out for the car. For now though, please free to view the article here...

Alright, been a while since I've made any progress car but it's been a great year personally. Me and my wife just had a baby in January so I've been super busy with that among other things (OT at work, currently doing a mortgage refinance, etc.).
I bought another '81 Turbo 301 (computer control) distributor and am currently going about a rebuild on it. Doing it myself this time around. Ordered a bunch of parts from DUI (Davis Unified Ignition)...
-New magnetic pickup
-New coil harness
-New computer control harness
-New cap, rotor and performance coil (I had them send me a stock-appearing cover for a factory look)
-Gear shim kit (they're recommending .025"-.030" shaft end-play)
The start....

Ok, 1 day later, this rust remover stuff from Harbor Freight actually worked. I still need to order/find a shaft seal but I think I'm pretty close to being ready to reassemble this thing.

Looking good! I may have to pick up some of that stuff. I've still got some rusty stuff I need to clean up and paint.
Can you explain more about what you are going to do with the distributor? Is it EFI related?

Yes sir on the EFI....but a more old-school way!
This is an '81 Pontiac 301 distributor. '81 was the only year a Pontiac engine received a fully computer controlled distributor and these distributors can drop in any 350-455. These distributors utilized a 7-Pin module, unlike the traditional 4-Pin vacuum advance HEI's.
The Megasquirt manual probably explains it best...

Yea, I’ve been left, right, up and down with this car on changes so it’s definitely a confusing read. I’ve thought making a new thread but I guess I’m just keeping it going since most builds change anyway.
The route I’m planning is using a Rochester TBI injection on my stock iron intake. I’m basically planning on doing a fuel injection conversion with various OEM GM equipment and probably an aftermarket computer (still debating on using a modified GM computer).

that’s will be an interesting setup to see....I’m finishing my build on a new iron block 461 stroker on mine and thought I read earlier you were going with a MPFI setup....I am running a Holley sniper on my current mild 400 but I’ve been having trouble finding an intake that will work to go MP on a Pontiac motor that isn’t to high so I can still keep my shaker...I probably should start a thread in the fuel injection section but it’s alittle slow on the response over there...if you have an advice that would be awesome...was thinking about the terminator x

Thanks, yes I can give you a few recommendations!
The Speedmaster EFI intake is a very affordable option for a Pontiac. It’s probably the shortest aftermarket intake because it’s basically a copy of the old Holley Street Dominator. See below...
https://www.jegs.com/i/Speedmaster/746/PCE148.1038/10002/-1
The next and more expensive option is the Edelbrock EFI intake which is based off the Torker II design. This one should be slightly taller than the Speedmaster but should still fit under most stock hoods.
https://www.edelbrock.com/torker-ii-efi-pontiac-intake-manifold-50565.html
For current computer options, the Holley Terminator X seems to be a great option most people’s wallet. You can look into the Universal kit...
https://www.holley.com/products/fuel_systems/fuel_injection/terminator_x/terminator_x_and_x_max_universal_kits/terminator_x_universal_kits/parts/550-936
For computer controlled timing, Holley and FAST make dual sync Pontiac distributors if you want to set the engine up for sequential injection. If you just want batch fire, any locked out 2-wire distributor will work. If you want to be cost effective, lock out your stock HEI, put in a 7-wire HEI module (like my post above) and it can plug into a computer. Either way you go, you have drop-in options here.
Holley...

FAST...
https://www.fuelairspark.com/pontiac-dual-sync-billet-distributor.html
If you want to check this out, I made a thread this past week for old-school Olds/Pontiac guys who are interested in going EFI on a budget. One Pontiac guy used the Speedmaster port injection intake, '81 301 computer distributor and used a custom-tuned computer from an early 90's Corvette.

Awesome awesome info....thank you so much.....the only thought and issue I might have with the speedmaster or lowish intake like that is my power goals for my new motor...will it drop those power goals compared to what I was trying to get to is my question.....also how much real world difference would I see with the terminator vs a TBI

Those low profile intakes can be port matched to +300cfm aluminum heads. You won't miss much.
Also, I edited the above post to add some more links for you.

Got an '80-'81 NA 301 passenger side manifold in the mail today. The reason why I picked this up is because these exhaust manifolds have an o2 sensor bung built in from the factory. I have not done any test fitting but hopefully this should work for the EFI conversion. One part that's different from my engine is that there is an extra bolt hole between the D-ports and I will need to block it off. This won't be high-performance but it should be a fun piece to add to the car since it's a factory Pontiac part.
My next debate is what manifold to use on the driver side. I've been thinking a log manifold would be good to make it cheap but I've also been wondering if I could get a driver side Ram Air manifold and loop under the oil and to this manifold.

That’s really cool and here I am asking more stupid questions.....I have my O2 sensor much further back in the exhaust system....is it much better up on the manifold like that? I do have headers though so maybe that’s why

You're all good. Sharing and communicating with people is the main reason why forums exist. I unfortunately can't give you any 100% educated answer here. I know most aftermarket companies say to put the o2 sensor "x" amount of inches after the collector so they don't get burned up. In the opposite fashion, I feel a lot of factory oxygen sensors are located closer to the cylinder head than what is recommended by the aftermarket. Maybe that could be a question for the EFI section :/

Scored a 2nd-hand new Megasquirt MS2 (3.57 model) EFI computer and harness this past week. I'm very excited to get to collect this one for the project. I'm still a way away from getting to working on test fitting but the EFI setup is getting closer. Next will need to be determining a fuse and relay setup.

The Megasquirt EFI harness is pretty nice for the money. Every wire is labeled for each sensor (IAT, water temp, TPS, IAC, etc.).

If the labeled wires aren't enough, they provide a nice wire map/pinout diagram.

That is one of the reasons why I like Megasquirt. Their manuals are huge reads but everything is so well documented. They can tell you how to wire to some weird old Volvo engine (as example) or the common LS engine.

Finally coughed up a few dollars for calipers and rear rotors. Still need rear pads, hard lines, axle hose, distribution block and manual push rod.
Apparently the '79-'81 WS6 disc rear calipers have been unavailable recently. I was pretty happy to get them in 2 days from Autozone.

You’re all good to ask questions. For a brake conversion, it depends on how much money you want to spend and what size wheel you want to run.

Got a few minutes in the garage today (should have done more). Pulled off my 1LE rotor and started wire-wheeling my passenger spindle with a drill. After I did that, I sprayed it with brake cleaner, wiped off quickly, hung some old t-shirts and rattle canned the spindle silver. I only did the one side but I will do the other side soon. I have a one car garage so I have to push the car to either side when I work on it.

Part of the reason I haven't done anything with the build in this area lately is because I wanted to get everything professionally degreased, blasted and painted. While that has been my intention, it feels good to get something done here. Yea, there's still some grease here and there but I'm happy just to get something done today.
I also did the calipers I just purchased. Again no special masking or anything. I just sprayed with brake cleaner, removed the bolts and painted the outside portion silver.

I hope this post helps someone out. Sometimes, this stuff is not perfect but you need to move on and not think about it. I wish I could have spent money on getting these parts prepped/finished professionally or even powder coated but for a few dollars and some effort, this makes me happy to have something more presentable.

Luckily I've never had that bolt break but I've seen it happen to others.
No progress on mine. Combination of reasons. House repairs became a priority, almost died two more times in the past 6 months from heart issues, and with no medical insurance they left me with even more debt than I had from the first heart attack & other medical issues. And now, the world has stopped, orders are few, and I don't even qualify for the stimulus. So I've got to work on and sell other cars to try and get my head above water. I'm expecting with the current situation I'll have to practically give away the cars to sell them because the market is going to drop like a rock. So it's going to be a minute before any real progress on the Firebird.

Went to the store this evening and picked up some Hi-Temp grease so I could start reassembling my Turbo Pontiac distributor which is getting repurposed for EFI.
Davis Unified Ignition recommends .025”-.030” end-play. I’m setting the shaft on the tighter side at 0.025” using my feeler gauge.
Had to stop before driving in the pin tonight (don’t want to wake the baby).
This should hopefully be a fully functional Pontiac EFI distributor tomorrow!
