View Full Version : Seats for a tall guy in a first gen camaro
Got to get some seats soon for my 67 Camaro project. I am 6'5" and will be putting new floors and chassis in the car so mounting options are many. Looking for a low profile seat and probably won't be using headrests. Thinking about the Recaro Expert with the leg extension but can't find anyone local that has them to test. Any tall guys or builders out there with some recommendations? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The expert is pretty shallow/low compared to most other seats.
For maximum clearance for you, you may benefit from either fabricating your own floor brackets, or modifying the aftermarket ones. We've had to do that a couple times to suit the customers height.
Were a Recaro dealer, not sure if you had been in contact with us yet or not- just FYI!

New floors, as in stock replacements or fabricating your own floors?
If stock floors, I used the Planted Brackets in my Cutlass, and was able to cut the legs and re-weld to lower the seat about 1". Noticeable difference, I'm also using a shaved base driver seat.
Not sure if you'd be able to lower the Planted brackets for a Camaro, but I'd assume they could be lowered somewhat.
It's getting an Art Morrison chassis so the floors will be custom so I need something low profile. They will be pushed back towards the back seat too. Tough to fork out the dough for the Recaros too.

I have Corbeau GTS seats with their brackets in my 1st gen. I'm 6'-3" and had to cut the brackets down about an inch to fit. Now my seating position is great, but my helmet rubs the headliner. There is room above the headliner bows, and I've searched for a low profile headliner but found nothing so far. For you I would suggest getting the lowest possible seats, and if they offer "shaved" foam go for it. You may also want to look into some kind of alternate headliner.
Good suggestion on the headliner, thanks. I will look at that.

The TMI one-piece molded headliner for 67-69 Camaro's is supposed to give you 1-2 inches additional head room.

I'm very interested in this - 1-2 inches would be great!

Here is an option for you. At the new car show, I sat in several cars to find low and narrow seats that would work in my '69. I settled on the Scion FRS which are the same as the Subaru BRZ which has a leather/suede combination. These seats were readily available used. They fit great after making simple brackets. The drivers seat has the pump up/down level allowing the seat to go way down around 2-3 inches from the floor. Plan to reupholster them because those red shoulder patches just don't work for me. See pics.
Thanks for all of the suggestions, I sat in a ton of cars at the San Diego auto show this past weekend.
I decided to go with the Recaro experts from Dale at Schwartz with the stock sliders and custom brackets. They seem very low and in combination with an after market headliner, I should be able to fit in the car. I also picked up a cheap pair of LS Recaros this past weekend that I will probably use for the rear, but at least I have some good options. Bkfast, been following your build as well, keep up the good work, you are ahead of me, will be starting a thread soon.
