My next upgrade for my car will be the steering, I currently have the OE Manual unit..:hand: . I have looked at the flaming river rack system (around $1500), would I be better of just getting a power steering unit instead? I would like to upgrade to one of flaming rivers polished columns as well..
Thanks in advance for any advice!:icon996:

I have the same question. Also what parts would I need to just do the basic manual to power steering.

if you guys are just looking to do an easy stockish swap, go out to your local wrecker, find a 70-79 Camaro/Firebird/Transam check the lock to lock on it and find a 2 1/2-3 turn box.You won't need the shaft or pitman arm.

Then find a Nova 70-72 with power steering and grab the pitman arm...the arm on the steering box. You will need a big hammer (BFH#4) and a puller with necassary tool. Its an easy afternoon job...bring band-aids.

Vince , do those boxes compare to the dse stuff, is the "feel" any better? My 69 box has no feel , too light. Dse really makes thier box sound like a big improvement.

The DSE box IS a big improvement.. I did the junkyard deal on my '67 Camaro (close ratio box from a 79 Z28) and it was a great improvement over the stock cruddy box and a GREAT bang for the buck.

But, I loved my 600 box that was in the '69.. It felt every bit as tight as any rack I have driven. AGR also makes some nice stuff. The only downside to the pick-a-part deal is that you don't know how worn it is and from an engineering perspective the 600 is better made than the older 800 boxes (Im my opinion)..

Personally I suggest the 600 box and a factory tilt column with a nice new rag joint.. but I guess I am just a bit old school.. lol

And hand degreaser :)

This is the best and cheapest way to have better steering.. Isn't there some sort of mark on the close ratio boxes.. like an X or something?

Agreed. The 600 box is a huge improvement.

Not sure, I can't comment first hand but I here they are very nice. For me I can't seem to justify spending more than $100 for a steering box. My favorite mod is using a 3rd gen box.Great feel.

And our new LEE 670 box is even better.... not to mention the price is much less than DSE's 600 unit. :naughty:

I'd go with either one of the new aftermarket boxes or a third gen box. You can get a rebuilt third gen box from the local auto parts store, get hose adaper fittings to use your stock hoses, a new rag joint must be used.
Here is an example.

I just received my SpeedDirect.com rack and pinion. It can be used manual or power with all components to install included. It was around $1035 shipped. I have not installed it yet but the product looks to be of nice quality.

I have ordered according to this site, yet to be installed. PS Box from Schucks, Moog from Summit, and Rag Joint from Rock Auto. Pump, hoses, cooler, and bracket from DSE.
