They may have improved but this has always been the case in my experience. I just installed owner supplied Soffseal on a 57 Nomad and they sucked.

I have to slam the doors and trunk very hard to get the lock, which I was trying to prevent by installing 5th gen latches, and on the lower door gaps I now have almost a 1/4" raise on what was very flush body work. Frustrating, but glad it has been identified
Have you ever tried 'Steele Rubber products'? I watched a video on how they're made, they appear to be superior to my current seals, the perk is that they're only 15 minutes from where I live?

I would rate Steele as better than Soffseal but not as good as Metro. I used Steele on a 55 Nomad.

Everything is looking great, but body work is very messy business. Wait till you start sanding skim coats and the bondo dust starts flying. FYI, I bought a 3M dust mask with pink cartridges on eBay for like $15 bucks and was one of the best things I bought. Definitely saved my lungs.
Oh and before you toss those Metro seals in the trash, shoot me a PM and maybe we can work out a deal.

I'll get straight onto that 3M mask, my current masks don't cut it as I'm already feeling the side effects of it. once it's in primer I'd say I won't see the car until it's in color, I've got a couple different shops coming to take a look to give me some quotes.
I'll let you know how I go with the seals tomorrow.

I just spent about $1k to have my doors torn back apart to have 1 year old wing window seals from Steel Rubber replaced. My car is kept in air conditioned garage, and these seals were disintegrating. I'm bringing them with me to Memphis to confront them if they are there

Metro seals arrived, I've only taken the time to replace the trunk seal but it's much better. The Soffseal was also slowly improving but only by compressing itself, so I'll continue with the skim coating asap.
Even while installing the Metro seal it was tight and popped firmly into place, while the soffseal could easily fall out, sometimes just by opening the trunk.
Soffseal on the left, Metro on the right.

time for an update.
I've spent over 4 weeks working around the clock on the body work on my car, I could have posted daily showing the tiny areas I refined over and over again but figured best just wait. And after all that time, I only achieved to complete the back half of the car...
I've done body work before on imports I've owned but never anything to this scale, I studied a ridiculous amount to allow myself to feel confident enough to tackle such a big job, but I'm happy with the end results.
I decided to use evercoat products only, with a variety of their fillers used for different purposes, Metal 2 Metal for the roof seam, Rage ultra for initial build up, Quantam 1 for skim coating and Easy-sand glaze for finishing. I'm pretty happy with the majority of the body lines and the trunk gap.
Just yesterday I managed to get some 2k epoxy on burn-throughs and areas of interest so it gives a good idea of the results.

I won't get too much more done at this point as the car is going to Charlotte speed shop later in the week for my last few items of fabrication, they will most likely complete the body work and high build the car, if the time and budget allows we may even aim for paint.

Wrapped her up because rain was in the forecast but luckily the shop is only 10 minutes away, first priority will be finalizing everything on the firewall and wrapping up some loose ends.
Always a stressful day when the car goes to a new shop but I'm hoping the results will be good.

Pics as promised, I spent the previous few days preparing the garage, storing everything properly followed by protecting it.
Then today I got stuck right into the car. First plan is to hit the whole interior with U-POL Raptor Liner.
months ago I seam sealed the interior so this saved a step, I removed the remaining bits and pieces throughout the car. A bonus to having the 5th gen dash is the support frame unbolts and can be removed entirely!
Then sanding with 80 grit and red scotch brite for what seemed like an eternity.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/5QlYVmSl-1.jpg
I already begun taping up some areas I didn't want to sand, just to maintain the clean epoxy.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/nJ30BT9l-1.jpg
finished the day with some extra seam sealing since I had very good access to everything, plugs went back in the car for the last time.
Yes, I'm going a little over the top with it, raptor liner will be sprayed inside and underneath the car. but hey, it's a street car and damn it'll be sealed.
Tomorrow, we mask up and start shooting!

The morning consisted of getting the garage up to temp while taping eeeeeverything up, I thought I was going a little over the top with this but once I got started I was very happy that I did, raptor liner can be messy!

Very happy with the results.

Once rolled down flat I don't think it'll have any difficulty sticking, I've seen it done like this a bunch of times. Either way, I could get some soon and get a definitive answer. I was going to use a combination of Noico and membrane.

Okay, So I have spent the last two day's looking at this thread and I am blown away. You sir are doing an incredible job on your car and I think I will be said when it's finished. However, for now I am just going to look forward to seeing your updates.
Once again Beautiful car and I like that you looked at the Porsche for inspiration on the body colors and the caliper colors.
Plus Porsche has some of the nicest silvers out there.
ps In the middle of my last build I actually bought a Cayman R and I managed to but 10,000 miles on it this summer including a track day at Road America.
slimjim
12-15-2018, 01:21 PM
Thanks for the kind words guys, it really helps to motivate me to get to work on this dang car.
Syborg tt, glad you like the style I'm going for, I'm still undecided on color however the Mercedes SLS has a pretty awesome silver at the top of my list.
So while I wait for the weather to get good enough for some primer, I decided to get stuck into the pedal situation now that enough parts have arrived for it.
This was an ongoing investigation which combined the issues of a pre-stamped smoothed firewall designed for the original 68 pedals and a dash structure from the 5th gen Camaro.
After purchasing 5th gen pedals, it was pretty obvious these would be a lot of work.
I figured it easiest to modify the dash structure over the firewall at this point so I picked up some original pedals and brackets off eBay and well...today I got busy on them.
The firewall from ambition road is designed for a flush mounted booster, this meant I needed to cut off the bolts from the original pedal bracket as it would now be bolted in the opposite direction, if that makes sense.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/9KMAl3Il-1.jpg
Another feature of the ambition road is the angled clutch master cylinder, after some research I went with the wilwood 260-10372, the machined bracket comes with the firewall for a very compact fit.
I had to slightly trim the MC to fit and it will have a remote reservoir.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/6annSN6l-1.jpg
After mounting the booster it's almost impossible to see the clutch master.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/ED8rKPOl-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/UZ7vP0zl-1.jpg
Behind the firewall will show what I mean regarding the booster mounting, I still need to run out for the 2 hidden bolts for the pedal bracket.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/TY71XT6l-1.jpg
So the biggest surprise came when trying to mount the 68 pedal bracket. I knew it wouldn't have any problem mounting to the firewall after I modified that end of it. but it came so close to the 5th gen location, that with a bit of tweaking, and some small spacers, I got it to bolt together. a huge shock, and not affecting the 5th gen steering column whatsoever.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/nMOm3kul-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/q86AIWnl-1.jpg
There's still some odd nuts and bolts I need to pickup to tighten everything 100% and I'll need a new clevis to attach the clutch pedal, but I'm now very excited to install the driver seat and get a feel for their current locations. if it works. it's a huge win!
oh and few days ago I also put. couple bolts in the battery tray, just because.

Sometimes it just works out that way. Good deal with the pedals. Make sure that you install some sort of positive clutch petal stop though so you don't overthrow the clutch master cylinder.

Another big couple of days in the garage, the first of which was spent protecting everything I didn't want to receive overspray followed by scuffing every inch of the car to receive feather fill G2 high build primer.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/iL3K7Qjl-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/BkS7xKdl-1.jpg
then an even longer day taping up. This was to be expected since I want as little overspray on the interior as possible.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/ACLms9tl-1.jpg
Then finally I hit it with primer. I used a 2.2mm tip and reduced it 5-10% but even then it was hard to spray. Regardless, I got the whole Gallon onto the body, and am happy enough with the result.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/QAGEWmzl-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2018/12/kEGF5X0l-1.jpg
So today I had the less than fun job of reverting the garage back to its original state and then hit the car with some guide coat.

That is the proform coil bracket, if you look at a picture below once the engine is further assembled, the coils now sit perfectly horizontal rather than angled. For now I will run it like that, but in the future I may consider hiding the coils on the subframe.

I have been doing bodywork for the most part of the last week, a crazy amount actually. progress is slow, but I'm very happy with it. I'll save the pictures until this stage of refining is complete, but my guess is I'll have another coat of high-build on it by this time next week.
Meanwhile, most days I start by doing something else on the car, just so my life doesn't entirely consist of being dusty.
I managed to get my clutch pedal connected, it seems 5/16-24 is a hard size to get an extension for the clevis, however it's done now.
I ordered some billet window switches from ringbrothers a few months ago, then I forgot about them, but they finally arrived a week ago, and some point in the last few months I also ordered a 'gauge-less console trim' for the 5th gen console and decided to put my idea to the test. I'm very happy with the final result and the switches are a piece of art.

Ok I have spent numerous days(every day since my last post) on the bodywork and finally the weather window started today so I didn't waste any time.
I setup my redneck garage/driveway paint booth and hit it again with featherfill poly. I took zero pictures during the sanding process and none bar this one picture today.
But I spent a lot of time refining the gaps over the last week, hit all the burn-throughs with epoxy and today it was ready.
Tomorrow I plan to push it out, clean everything up, and take some proper photos for you all. first results are very satisfying!

Wow, that is a great job! Body work really is satisfying. All the cussing you do while you are sanding, but when you step back after it's done to look at the finished product makes it all worth it. Dude, you just need to paint it yourself! You already have the booth set-up, just buy the paint and let it rip. If you were laying down nice consistent coats with the primer, the paint really isn't much different. The clear was definitely more tricky as it tends to run easier, but I just did light coats and took my time. YOU CAN DO IT!!

Thanks guys.
Ryan, It has crossed my mind, I doubt my abilities but then again, I doubted doing this stage of bodywork also. I was kind of driven to do this part as the previous body shop made no progress, moved my car to the next state over and since I brought the car home, and I was home, I got studying and tackled it myself and I'm now very happy that I did. Plus the car made significant progress when the other option was a wasted 6 months.
I would really like to continue sanding this second coat of poly, I'd hit it with 220 and continue hunting for any remaining lows...BUT.. this time next week I move back to Australia for the year...

So another project on my mind for a while got some attention today. Ages ago I bought the 4.5" Truck-lite driving lights which are made to match the 27270C headlights. But I couldn't figure out how to mount them and to buy a set of the fester billet mounts and re-work them would be an expensive experiment.
Well since these driving lights are most common for Harleys, I decided to get some cheap Harley pods and trim pieces from Ebay. So for about $18 I have these trim pieces that are sort of close to the 69 valance curve. They're far from perfect but I think with some nice tabs welded on the inside I should be able to get them to mount up pretty nice.

I also found what could be a very nice PCM location. This would sit directly behind my double din display, should get great ventilation and "shouldn't" intrude with the vintage air I am yet to purchase, and best of all, it is directly above the grommet where the harness goes through the trans tunnel.
I chose to use the dirty dingo E38 PCM bracket

Yeah I don't plan to use any of the original electronics so I'm running a PSI harness

Alright NiCopp update! finished up my brake lines this afternoon. I'm pretty happy with the end result considering I've never done this before, feel free to critique what you see.
I tried to keep it pretty similarly routed to the speedtech brake lines with the exception of the right and left front brake lines being separated. Gutter guard in all necessary places and even polished up the visible lines.

The two stainless clips on the crossmember are drilled and tapped, they're the only ones. but the pass-through sections are holes already provided on the subframe, since I'm using 5th gen brakes, I purchased Russell stainless brake lines off the shelf, then the AN fittings you see attach to those and are held to the frame with horse-shoe clips or whatever they're called.

Thanks a lot, I'm glad the car is received so well, no-one is more excited to see it finished than me, however updates are now on hold...
A couple of weeks ago I reinstalled the interior, cleaned up the garage and made a small shelter for the car. The only purpose of it was to prevent the garage door dripping on the primer while I'm out of the country.

3 weeks was not enough time to get the car to sealer. Mostly because I spent at least half of it boating, boozing, and everything else that makes summer so great. Only managed to get the top half of the car done in 220.

I screwed up years ago, I bought my previous wheels too early in the build when my original plan was to run the standard subframe, and the 8" front wheels had been on my mind ever since picking up the Speedtech subframe. Some stand-up dude from Canada emailed me after learning SOMEWHERE that I had reservations with my current wheels and offered to buy them. I jumped at the opportunity since my car doesn't need to roll for a few months and I couldn't be happier.
I decided 19's on the rear may be a little over the top so decided to keep it 18" at all 4 corners.
Not only have I upgraded to 9.5" fronts (not previously available for the style of wheel) but I also got step lips which I prefer a whole lot more. I also felt like I had a bit more outer clearance up my sleeve so both front and rear wheels will sit 1/4" wider than previously.
Now I have a few months to decide on what tires they deserve, which is turning out to be a little more difficult than first thought, options are currently between BFG rival S for obvious autocross reasons, Falken Azenis for longer life, Nitto nt01's, unless I can pickup some toyo R888's. argh its frustrating

I hadn't looked at anything from Cooper until now but it turns out they don't have anything 315-335 for 18" wheels. The options are a little more limited than I was expecting.

I was concerned for months that downsizing to 18's on the rear could introduce a brake clearance issue.. and rightly so. I was concerned the wheels wouldn't fit over the 14.4" brakes but was pleasantly surprised when they did... JUST. however, It now seems that the spokes of the wheels touch the front face of the caliper and need about 1/32" to clear it, so I will have to run a 1/4" spacer to overcome this issue and possibly run a 315 as opposed to a 335.
Anyways, I'll hopefully get some tires soon and learn what other issues I've created for myself.
Today I will get the fronts on, as I literally put the rears on after traveling 29 hours and couldn't wait a minute longer.

spent a lot of hours on the car recently while the weather has been warm(ish), and have managed to get the car ready for its final round of poly. this picture was maybe 2 weeks ago before I spent FAR too long tackling the rockers which was an area I had neglected until now.
once I was exhausted enough with sanding I also decided to get started on another double din display.
Tires should be on shortly, then the garage can be cleaned intensely before setting it up to spray primer.

yes that's my exact size. on the front the backspacing is 6" and the rears are 5" with a 53" wide rear end. so it's pretty aggressive and I STILL don't have tires due to a shipping issue so I'm yet to know if more work will be involved to fit them perfect.

Well the work on my car has never been greater yet the progress has never appeared slower. Finished up this round of 220p as well as body working the rockers. lot's of burn throughs due to my minimalist approach to body filler and I guess it bit me.
anyways, spent this week finessing edges, skimming here and there, removing panels and cleaning everything repeatedly!
finally got some epoxy on the burn-throughs a couple days ago and taped up the garage for yet another round of featherfill.
yesterday was my weather window so I hit it with another round, the car looks great and it's always such a relief to see it in a single color. the aim is to get it to 300-400 and hopefully it should be ready for some sealer and off to a body shop for the more intricate stages of paint and body. Should it not be able to get in on time, I may blow apart the front end and body work the firewall and inner wheel wells.

Well, It's certainly something I've considered, I've thought about what you've told me on multiple occasions. It's not so much the spraying that concerns me but more the location and space constraints. If my fabricator allows me to use his booth rather than pay a contracted body-guy to spray himself it's certainly something I'll consider taking on.
But I won't be putting down color in the garage, poly is easy and forgiving but there were several times when it was a real struggle to navigate around the car, air hose scrapes another part etc.

What you have done looks really great, and you know that you've done an excellent job with the body work. Unfortunately, from my experience most body guys want to do their own prep since they would be spraying the paint and putting their name on it. They want to really ensure that the prep work was done to their standards, so if they don't know you they would likely want to re-do some of what you have already done.
I'm not sure if they can be rented, but there are also those portable/inflatable spray booths. Not sure if that is an option for you, but maybe something to look into.

Very true, this may become an issue but I'll just have to see later in the year. prior to paint it's going back to ambition road for a final look over, some small fab jobs etc, and take care of a few things better to do prior to paint.

Before leaving for work I tackled the last area I'd shown taped, not much to report there and overall I'm happy with it. But I forgot to mention my ongoing frustration with my anvil spoiler, it's fiberglass, it was at a reduced price and it's wavier than the southern ocean and I've put a lot of time just to get it how it is..
If anyone has any ideas how to get the leading edge straight which runs along the trunk I'm all ears...
In general the whole piece fits poorly.
I'm thinking I need to trim that edge off and re-fiberglass or epoxy on a straight edge.

Time for an update.
I've been busy, very busy. any guess what I've been doing?
got the entire car to p320 and I've gotta say I'm pretty happy with it. I'm confident it can be sprayed with Evercoat URO-FILL urethane primer next at which point I'll sand it dry 400 and maybe a wet 600. But first, I need to do the body work on the engine bay so today I started disassembly on the front end.
I also got my rear 315/30/18 rivals mounted and I'm very happy with the extra width in these wheels. I think I can lower the rear some more but I won't truly know until it's back on the ground.

Thanks fellas, I'm more confident every day about it's final outcome, and heavily considering painting it myself if I can hire a booth.
It really is just shocking how much labor is involved in paint and body. I finally tackled the body, then yesterday started the details under the hood.. however, the learning curve has been great and if I can apply enough of my time I'm hopeful I'll get this done quickly.

Thanks Wayne, it was relatively straight and flat so body work was easy. Most of the engine bay is super straight, really just doing body work to fill grind marks and scratches.
I found out today I will be home(not working) until this virus blows over, and with the 60-70 degree days I am jumping at the chance to get this body work squared away, If I can get all filler and poly primer work complete I'll be very happy, If I can get it sealed I'll be ecstatic.

Dude, you could totally paint it yourself. When I did my car, we did it in pieces. First the shell, then all of the others in groups. Unless you are doing a metallic, you could do it that way. Check out the Modern Charger build, he has a nice booth that he built in his own garage and the results were outstanding. You could always try to do something like that?

Keepats results really are outstanding. I am considering it, we'll see how it all plays out shortly with work/corona/ shop availability etc I suppose. I do plan to spray metallic, and silver at that so it's crucial it's all back together, If I were to do it myself I will probably choose a different route I suppose.

Another 8 hour day in the garage, unfortunately with minimal pictures, or should I say, very little work worth photographing...
As well as about 6 hours of filling and sanding places no-one will ever see, I decided it was best to A) make more garage space by using up scrap wood and B) make some work stands for the next steps..

I decided to combine two days together as progress is hardly worthy of photos..
But I have managed to complete 1 fender, 1 inner fender, the radiator support and lower valance and have removed them from the garage to clear the clutter as well as my head.
This is the first time I have had to sand a vented cowl and holy %$&* it took a while, 2 obvious low spots were the least of my worries.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/03/0DPR1cql-1.jpg
as well as all of the boring sanding and perfecting of obscure panels I have finally stripped the car beyond the point of return so it looks like I've committed now!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/03/qz80Qq9l-1.jpg

now we have 3 days into one post...but also, very boring process.
a lot of time is spent perfecting the panel edges and I finally got onto the door seals and firewall.
I was hoping the smoothed firewall panel would be flat enough to just poly but after scuffing it I quickly realized it'll all need a glaze coat.

Another 3 days work.
Hood's outer edges, Passenger inner fender, passenger fender, drivers door seal and fire wall as well as many other minor touch ups I can't remember have received some glazing work. I didn't want to get too carried away with the firewall, after all it is just completely flat and I figure the poly will reveal if it's anything other.
started taping up today and tomorrow I'll finish that, do a bit more seam sealing then epoxy the burn-throughs in the afternoon, the day after I should be able to hit these areas with feather fill.

There's simply just too many parts to paint in a garage once all is disassembled, and this step has easily confirmed that I will not be painting the car myself unless I have access to a booth. So for now I am priming the remaining parts in smaller amounts, and will then sand and prepare to seal them individually with some SPI epoxy before remounting them. but for now, I can get a start on blocking these parts in the sunshine.

It seems it has been a week since my last corona update, boy time flies.
I got the door seals and firewall complete and then begun the tedious task of going over the whole car with a fine comb to find any flaws or hidden surprises. This part was time consuming but I'm glad I did it.
I also removed the subframe and everything else from under the car. It was certainly exciting doing it all on my own to say the least.

Finally after EVERY piece of the car was finished to 400 grit and I was happy with everything, back came the ghetto booth for its final appearance.
As of today the pieces have begun going into black SPI epoxy.
I started with a couple of pieces I know I will be wet sanding in a couple of weeks so as to figure the product out a little but I couldn't be happier and I'm excited for the coming week as they hopefully all go back to black.

A warmer day meant an earlier start so I induced a bunch of epoxy and went to town.
some things I've learnt now that I have this glossy primer on:
-400 grit was not necessary
-320 grit was probably not necessary
-SPI primer fills almost as much as poly when it isn't reduced and flattens out much nicer!
-this car will be straight!....after a wetsand
I'm very happy to have sprayed 2/3 of the car now and have not found a single blemish that needs more attention. A couple more days like this and the whole car will be primed.

With primer looking that good, I bet you could paint it yourself. Nice job!
I'm sure I could, just not in the garage.
This primer stage has yet again confirmed that I don't want to paint it here.
During the high build stage I sometimes had the hose or my clothes brush a piece when wet but that wasn't a cause for concern as it would be sanded, I've fixed that by spraying a lot less parts at once, but even after cleaning the garage intensely and wrapping everything in plastic, I still have dust settle on the panels, particularly pollen due to the season. I just chose good angles above that didn't show it.
Then there's the value, I'm financially deeper than I've ever been with a car and although I've enjoyed the bodywork stage and don't see a reason why it couldn't be done here, paint just isn't the part for me to cheap out on at this point.
Then finally, as I want a metallic silver, the car ideally needs to be fully assembled for paint with all parts painted the same time, for this reason on top of all others it will go to a booth.

I have finished with epoxy. as of this morning I have started removing the plastic and cleaning the incredibly dusty black overspray from EVERYTHING.
I think overall, for the sake of not disturbing parts during the slow drying process It took 5 days to get everything epoxied, and it wasn't until the last piece of the last day did I perfect the process...
fortunately however this may be due to the fact that it is probably the only part that will remain in epoxy only so I gave it added attention and an additional coat.
I know powder coating is probably optimal but the rear housing already had an e-coat on it and figured this is reversible and will save it from rusting any further.
I did some research and found a large number of people who have done this, and was ensured that with an extended induction process of the epoxy it can have relatively good UV protection.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/04/So2JmtPl-1.jpg
I really like this product and learnt a lot while using it. I made a LOT of mistakes, fish-eyes, a couple runs, mismatched results due to differing induction times. but overall the car may stay like this for several months before I sand it prior to being painted so these mistakes are no real issue. But at least for now my bodywork is sealed and protected.
I have reassembled what I can and am very happy, the gloss of the primer has shown a low spot of the firewall and I am still trying to decide whether to address it or if the satin silver I want the engine bay will even show it. Also the rear bumper has never been body-worked so I will probably hit it with some filler and respray it once the epoxy has been given a little more curing time.

The difference in gloss level between a 2 hour induction(body) and no induction time(trunk) with the likelihood of a thiner coat also.

I lost sleep on my firewall being less than perfect. I probably rushed the bodywork stage here as I had assumed being a flat panel, it would be...flat. the epoxy told the truth. I decided to rework it over the weekend to much greater results.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/05/qxAYHK4l-1.jpg
while at it I decided to start bodywork on the rear flush bumper, again the epoxy helped in showing the lows.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/05/pV9dIXcl-1.jpg
I then spent a couple days underneath the car, prepping towards raptor liner. there was a lot more property requiring scuffing and seam sealer than I anticipated.
I also used some old Nicopp to make a new feeder tube for the gun in hopes that it will work better when lying on my back to spray it tomorrow.

And finally, one crucial step to be done prior to Bedliner was to paint the firewall. so I spent yesterday wet sanding and got it shot in the afternoon. more pics to come once it's cured but the results are pleasing.

Will do, it's one of the steps I tried not to think too much into. I saw that Detroit speed, ambition road, and a couple other big shops use the product, it's priced well and is an easy application so didn't lose any hair over that particular decision.
I've already applied it on the interior some time ago so I know how it should look.
Updates from today. firewall is cured, I waited the exact 24hours of curing before applying tape and I'm now ready for raptor liner.
This is SEM hot rod smoke, a color I couldn't find too many examples of online but I think it'll look great on a dark silver car and a more custom contrast over the traditional satin black.

Spent today reinstalling the the subframe. I thought it would be quite difficult to do it alone but it was mounted in no time.
I then decided to dismantle it just to fully rebuild it with grease and thread lock and torque everything that was necessary. it has been a couple of years since I purchased it and wanted to be sure everything was 100% at this point.
question- there's some poly primer overspray here and there on the powder-coated frame. it's barely noticeable but does anyone have a surefire way to remove it? I've tried a bunch of things but still can't remove it all.

I’ve used polishing compound and clay bar to remove. Polishing compound slightly glosses satin black though so keep that in mind when rubbing if yours is satin.

I've rather slacked off on the bodywork which is quite stupid since there's only a couple of pieces remaining that need attention, however wet sanding the radiator support and inner wheel wheels is a tedious project.
So I took a little hiatus from it and got into some mechanical assembly.
for anyone who has been here since the beginning may recall my anger towards a couple of shops that screwed me over at the beginning, and well, it seems like they are still screwing me. since fully removing everything from under my car I found a string of issues with the suspension and how it was mounted. multiple cases of the incorrect hardware, steps skipped in the install, and a couple of brackets supposed to be welded in missing entirely.
Anyways, most have now been rectified but a huge issue I had was with the condition of the 3rd member.
I ordered a strange tru-trac years ago, the shop assembled it and installed it before I got a good look. well upon removing it I realized that it looked like garbage, not to mention lacked half of the hardware sealing it and nothing was torqued. To overcome the bright blue nodular(I suspect possibly used) casing they painted it in one piece in the thickest paint I've ever experienced. days of paint stripper later I got it off and started a complete overhaul, the end result looks a little more suitable.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/05/JGX6Pszl-1.jpg
Then, thanks to a certain recall on some jack stands I got a bit of a kick to get the car supporting it's own weight, at least in the rear. so finally, all suspension is somewhat setup and torqued and 'may' never have to be removed again.

I got a bunch done on the car over this past week. I got the inner fenders, fender supports and radiator supports all painted. then hit the underneath of the inner fenders with raptor liner so these parts are all finished for good.
Today I reassembled the front end.
The only thing missing is some nicer hardware...oh and everything else that goes in there.

Thanks for the kind words from a lot of reputable hotrodders! It keeps me going.
Since powering through the bodywork things have slowed down a bit, and they will continue to slow down as my wife starts her first business and I commit my time towards outfitting her shop until the dredging world calls upon me again.
I managed to get the hood back on the car and decided to rice up the engine bay with some black billet washers and Allen head bolts and although subtle, I'll decide once it's painted if I like them or not, for now I do.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/06/UcYN12Ll-1.jpg
I then ordered a 36sq/ft box of Kilmat and have spent the last couple of days laying it down with only the highest level of OCD! It's the cheapest 80mil option I found with 170 5-star reviews on eBay and I will probably be the 171st. considering I'm going full coverage on the car, it seemed just.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/06/ap5tiM5l-1.jpg
I will order another box, finish out the roof and trunk, but the firewall and rear seat will have to wait until those 2 departments are finalized.
Not easily shown in any pictures but I also managed to run the starter 1/0 cable straight down the center of the car, the best part is I managed to slide it "through" the corner(?) of the 5th gen tunnel, you can see where it comes out near the passenger footwell in the picture above. Also ran the alternator 4 gauge wire down the drivers side.
I also installed all 4 speakers with baffles(both before and after sound deadener just out of curiosity; noticeable difference), braided and hid all the wires and ran them down the drivers side. I wired them up to a home theater sound system and let them rip. very happy.

It has been a busy couple of months with non-car related endeavors, however I found a few chances to spin a bolt and start new projects. Like many projects I've done before, I have started new ones, still unsure whether the end result will survive the cut in the final product of the build.
I have been trying to decide what to do in the trunk for some time, and functionality is quite important. I decided to spend a day with MDF and see if I could come up with a layout that I like that doesn't sap too much space. It's incomplete but I decided to keep the battery fully accessible and maintain all space to the rear seat for luggage, or golf clubs or something. The big question will be how heavy it is once complete, and even though this is not going to be a track car, I don't need to be adding too much unnecessary weight.

This thought process then lead to the next project, and although I have never had a subwoofer in any car, and I usually dislike them in any performance car, I stumbled across these powered subs designed for trucks/under-seat installation and the reviews were really good for this Alpine unit. The plan right now is to mount it underneath the parcel shelf IF I can find a suitable way to mount it that will stay secure. Overall it should provide a great mid-low range for the audio without taking up any space and only adding a little bit of weight.
To be mounted underneath this location.

I've been researching clutches for what feels like an eternity. There's recommendations for almost all of them, and bad reviews for all of them. It can be a frustrating topic. Last month I stumbled across an LS7 clutch going cheap on eBay, I made a bid and won it by surprise for a good price, so for now, the clutch headache is temporarily over unless I have any immediate issues with this one. I expect to be right on the limit of the LS7 clutches capabilities but at this point it gets me one step closer to completion.

MDF is pretty heavy stuff. You could use automotive interior grade waterproof cardboard (https://www.automotiveinteriors.com/waterproof-cardboard-door-panel-board-cowlboard-p/cowl-dp.htm) if you're just making paneling to make it nice looking back there for a lot less weight. From your described use, I'd suggest doing away with the MDF altogether and just get a decent padded carpet made up for the floor. If you put the carpet pad all the way across on the bottom, you could make the side panels so they fit tightly on the carpet for a clean, finished look. This would be washable if needed, and would be tons lighter in the back. If you do decide to go with the MDF, waterproof it all the way around. Trunks get wet, and MDF crumbles when wet.
Incidentally, I've never used the company I linked, but the link shows what I'm talking about.
That subwoofer one you have should make your sound system sound a lot better. I had a Kenwood version of your subwoofer in a pickup I used to have, and taking the base off the other speakers really improved the sound. I'm not one of those guys driving slowly down the road going thumpty-thump though, I just like clean sounding music at around the same volume level as you'd use speaking in a conversation. The truck is gone now, but that Kenwood subwoofer is now mounted in my shop.

Please don't use MDF in a car. It will absorb moisture badly. Not only will it swell as it suck up the water, it'll begin to mold.
Long term, things will end badly. Yea, it's what all the Honda kids use for their subs and it works great. But that's not long term.

Thanks for the advice guys, you both reinforced some of my concerns, I'll take a look at the waterproof cardboard but may end up going back to ABS sheets similar to what they use for door panels, it's significantly lighter and I only really need it on the perimeter if I choose not to run the heaviest panels on the floor.

Thanks frank, I'm a huge fan of your work and your products. Don referenced the correct parts, and they're easily found on eBay. I actually plan to eventually buy another, as there is a slight difference in the quality of some and I believe I have the more flimsy version. Let me start by saying great project!! Love all the mods and the knowledge sharing (like the rear bumper mod, etc) is very cool of you to do! One question I wanted to ask was when you did the custom mesh for your grill does it sit on the very back of your grill or does it actually sit inside of the shell itself? I’m assuming you use some sort of epoxy to attach it with? I’ve been knocking around the same idea for my 67, but my first attempt it’s going to be trying to use the factory grill and just add a piece. If I can’t do that then I will probably look at some mesh material similar to what you used.

Thanks for the kind words. I never considered what I was doing as knowledge sharing ha, The beauty of old cars is they can be done several ways and all I've tried to do is show what I did. If you've read the whole way through you'll even see the mistakes I made, the changes I made, what worked and what didn't.
As for the grille, I mounted the mesh behind the grill and yes, used an epoxy(or something similar, I don't quite remember now, maybe plastic welding) to do so, saying that, it seems weak. when I finally dig around to pull it out of storage for final install, I actually planned to lay a thin strip of fibreglass or similar to strengthen it.
Now for yours, I don't quite know how you'll mount the original mesh but I'm sure you can make it happen. one piece of advice I never mentioned previously, is to mount it on the car BEFORE mounting the mesh, just to ensure you're not distorting the opening or anything like that, I believe I got lucky with mine but could see it being a big problem for others. I hope that makes sense.

Yep I got to actually read through everything yesterday. All part of it - I’ve started a build thread but I don’t have the touch, lol! Plus I usually don’t take enough pictures.
As for attaching, I came across some videos yesterday where you take some plastic (old grill section), break it up into small pieces then mix them with acetone to make a “plastic glue”. So epoxy for strength and some small welding rod/wire on the back across the joints for strength, the should be hidden by the grid. The slurry mix would be to fill in any gaps, etc. then after all that and if it looks like crap I’ll go with a similar mesh material like you used, lol

Becoming a dad has made for a wild ride these last couple of weeks, especially with the wife opening a business just a month prior, however I have managed to find time to start getting back into the project. It seems like motivation/time comes in small squirts and will probably remain like this for coming months. Squirts is a common word used in my life at the moment.
I managed to get the trunk and roof finished out in kilmat. It sometimes feels like a step backwards adding so much weight but I want this cabin sealed and comfortable. I'm still planning the next noise reduction steps as I figure out the carpet situation.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/11/MCLzgIwl-1.jpg?2
I left the back seat area without deadener for now as I still need to figure out what I'm doing here. after a bit of foam removal I managed to get the 5th gen base to fit very nice, and I actually had the original bracket and I'm currently modifying it to fit, and most importantly, retaining it's baby seat mounting brackets(sorry no pics of this yet). The back rest will need some more serious modifications to fit between the wheel tubs but I'll most likely give this to the upholsterer to do at a later date.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/11/L2EV9SBl-1.jpg
I also got a little sick of it on stands, and wasn't really sure why I waited so long, but I ordered my front tires and got the car back on the ground.
I didn't want to mess with the inner tubs any more now that they're painted so I got quite an aggressive backspace for a 9.5" wheel, but the 275's actually fit really well and for now(without a motor and tranny installed) there are no rubbing issues.... touch wood.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/11/YbUr6vul-1.jpg
This also allowed me to roll the car out and take a proper good look at my bodywork now that it's sealed. overall I'm very happy with it and have newfound motivation to get it in for paint sooner rather than later.

Haha great advice!! these 5th gen seats are factory leather for now, and I will probably try and keep them that way to keep costs down in the upholstery stage. but being factory seats slightly narrowed, I bet that there's also an aftermarket cover available.
installing these brackets literally never crossed my mind until last week when A. I installed my first baby seat, and B. realized I had the factory 5th gen seat brakes, and with only minimal modification, will allow 2 child seats to be utilized, which are realistically the only thing that will fit on this back seat.

Getting this 5th gen rear seat to look at home hasn't been the easiest task but Ambition road are tasked with finishing this job. A part of this job is to retain the modern child-seat mounts and install a raised base so it becomes a little more functional.

That makes it exactly like they are in the 5th gen car lol the back seat is only there for looks rather than function. Otherwise the Camaro would be classified as a 2 seater like the Vette. It was quite a chore to get a child seat in the back of my ZL1 as well

I definitely tried to retain 5th gen dimensions by putting the front seats a little wider and a little further back than the original 68 mounting so I was never expecting anything even close to the term "leg room". I guess if I take any positives from it, it's that I'll never be the person in the back. The baby seat will also be a hassle, but at the speed I've been building this car, she'll probably be able to climb in herself by time we take it for a drive haha

You and I both, I have gone back and forth on the stinger hood, it's something I never loved 100%, but I just didn't want a cowl hood. If It wasn't so modified for my gas-strut custom hood hinges and VW hood latch, not to mention the modifications to the intake(still not 100%),I think I'd settle for a plain flat hood.

As previously mentioned, I wanted Aaron at Ambition road to take a look over my car and finalise a bunch of things that weren't 100% and that I was losing sleep on. I really wanted his expertise to take care of certain things before we got the car painted so that final assembly can go relatively smoothly.
Brake lines are all but complete and soon to be bled. I'd previously made Nicopp lines but Aaron likes to maintain his DSE standards so he re-bent them in stainless, I'm always surprised how quickly he can get it done, and wow they're tight.
I had also purchased the larger proportioning valve but it is apparently not necessary for this application and can over-complicate the lines, Again, following DSE standards we used the smaller unit and hid it underneath the floor.
While there I also had him finalise the E-brake lines.

Another task was finalising the pedals and steering column.
I wanted the pedals to match those of the 5th gen, this involved installing some new backing plates on all the pedals and fitting the pedal covers. A small DBW pedal bracket was also fabricated to fit the 5th gen gas pedal to Ambition roads flat firewall. Finally the dash was trimmed for better ergonomics and more leg room for my gangly long legs.
The steering column was a concern for a very long time, we looked at using the 5th gen column but in the end, the pros and cons lent in the direction of IDIDIT, where it's issues were simply cosmetic, whereas the modern column issues were electrical as well as the awkward fitment with the original pedals and steering location.
I have a billet steering wheel, it may get used temporarily, I may also look at modifying the 5th gen wheel and if all else fails, I may have to cough up the dollars for a Sparc wheel. options are open.

Everything is moving slowly, no surprises there, but I'll be bringing my car home shortly to finalise the body work before paint.
One thing that was important to take care of at Ambition Road is matching the front bumper to the tucked rear bumper.
I obviously like 69 driving lights on the earlier models, but often this makes it appear unfinished to me. The tucked, and more importantly raised bumper finishes it out a little better IMO.
This is also a subtle modification Roadstershop do on a lot of their 67's and 68's.

Getting this 5th gen rear seat to look at home hasn't been the easiest task but Ambition road are tasked with finishing this job. A part of this job is to retain the modern child-seat mounts and install a raised base so it becomes a little more functional.
James I have a 67 vert and debating on the 5th gen seats also. I have the tubs as well. Looks like it is just installing an elevated bracket for the tunnel clearance is the biggest thing. I don't know the actual width of the 5th gen seat but looks like it would fit the 48" narrower Camaro option. Not sure how the height is though. How tall does yours set up vertically. Getting the seats from local yard is not a costly deal but don't want to get if it wont fit. TIA

Radtexas, I don't have the measurements however my seat is now trimmed a bit. We lowered the backrest a little by trimming the lower portion of it so that it didn't stick up too high above the parcel shelf, although it still does by an inch or two. The base also sits a little higher than an original, this is just by design as the 5th gen is designed to sit on a flat floor, this is ultimately what we did with the brackets to mount it.
With the mini tubs you need to narrow the original fold-down seat bracket or make your own.

Finally got my car back home, and going over the work that Aaron at Ambition Road completed sure is exciting.
A couple small things taken care of is access to the car. With the updated 5th gen door locks paired with maintaining the appearance of the original outer door handles, I wanted the opening to be simpler and easier than the clunky door handle mechanisms. so inside the doors are now door-popper style solenoids which will be activated by soft-touch buttons inside the original door handles.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2021/06/HO69PCil-1.jpg
I was also concerned about the effects a dead battery would have on the car, so I now have a hidden mechanical trunk popper installed as well, which is pretty difficult to make out in this picture.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2021/06/W7jhG9Cl-1.jpg
Also, since I decided on using the ididit column rather than 5th gen, I've spent a considerable amount of time researching steering wheels. There's no shortage of great wheels out there but very few that suit a modern interior short of SPARC industries billet wheels, which are what I suspect I'll end up with. However, in my searches I found a heavily reduced CPP billet wheel that I ordered just to make do temporarily until I figure it all out. To my surprise, it looks a little better than expected.

Small update.
I didn't want all of my freshly fabricated parts to get rusty and since they probably never need to come out again I decided to pull a bunch of parts and give them a solid coat of epoxy.
Once done I finished the rear seat riser in a textured black coating and the seat bar in a hammer-finished silver. While they were out I jumped at the chance to finish this section in Kilmat.(it was still unfinished in this picture).

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2021/07/J84RU8zh-1.jpg
I also pulled the steering column and finished it in satin black. the closeout piece I had made to tie it into the dash was also treated with the textured black to add some contrast for now.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2021/07/mNeKL5Jh-1.jpg
One thing you'll notice is the airbag cover fits over the billet steering wheel, and although it doesn't fit as well as it could, it doesn't look entirely out of place, so it's something I'll toy with in the future.
While there I hit the front bumper with Epoxy as well as a spot I wasn't satisfied with on the hood.

James, did you use the Killmat then put something over that? If so, That's what I did! Fire retardant and mildew resistant.

I really liked working with it. it's a product Don Hutton has used on previous builds and that's all the convincing I need on a product like this.
Some good upholstery scissors and aluminum tape can allow it to be conformed any way you'd like, here's a pic early on after making it fit over the tunnel, it now covers everything, and acts as a carpet pad.

Small updates but I’m still staying at it when I can.
I’ve been hand-making some running light housings to fit the 4.5” lights I wish to use. It’s a little time consuming making the aluminum tube “eye-shaped” to fit the natural shape of the valance, and then there’s the slow process of sanding from 60-2000grit to get it looking pretty again. But after a few hours…I’ve almost got one side half way done…

Still alive!
Still progressing, just slower than desired. I feel like I'm in a Paint jail alternate-universe, I find myself awaiting a painted car but I at least have the car until it can get in the booth, so not the biggest problem.
I've been busy getting the bumpers perfect, which has been a bumper-on, bumper-off process several times. for pieces I thought we almost perfect they sure have taken up a lot of my time.

I've also been messing around with some 3M matrix vinyl for some of the smaller pieces.

Not sure how it ended up here but let's just say if I had this mediocre level of skill and reckless attitude years ago, this car would have been finished a long time ago..
After another call with the painter I've been waiting on for months, and another postponement to the new year, I woke up one day with a "F#%& it" attitude, ordered an Anest Iwata Kiwami 4 from Japan and some paint and decided to see what happens..
Between the wife's new business, a second child and an already full schedule, I spent many nights setting up the garage, and while weather was warm(ish), I spent the early hours of thanksgiving laying it down on my car. shaking with nerves and convincing myself I could sand it off if I fail, it actually turned out alright.
The massive diversion in the project has clearly resulted in a different color, but the panel painting made a dark metallic silver no longer an option and I'm quite happy about that. If there's any better option, it's definitely black.
I sprayed reduced SPI epoxy as sealer and it came our perfect! the black SPI single stage not so much, I just couldn't get the gun setup how I'd like but I threw down 4 coats and am happy enough with the result.
I left it a couple of days before staying up late one night and followed the advice from Don H on how he cuts and buffs this paint. Honestly I did not think I'd recover this paint as much as I did and after finishing just the PS rear fender at this point, arguably the most peeled panel, I am blown away with the flawless finish.
Anyways, here's some pics, a lot of late nights ahead getting this thing slick.

Couldn’t have done it without your advice, especially the Final Cut. I opted for dura gold sandpaper for its cheapness just because I did not know if I’d even be able to pull this off, as soon as I did that first panel I ordered some eagle abrasives and trizact!
So as it stands this is only 1000 dry, 1500 wet, 3000 wet, 3D aca 500 on wool, 3D aca 520 foam. Taped edges during the first cut and I try to maintain it and even reapply through the wet sanding but the tape just falls apart real quick.
I’m very excited to see it with even better abrasives plus an 8000 cut.

Curious what air pressure you used. The manufacturers specified pressure is just the pressure to make the gun compliant. Optimum spraying is usually with a higher pressure. I find 28 psi works well with my Iwata guns.
Usually full fan and 2-1/2 turns out on the fluid. 50% overlap on your passes.

I tried everything from 26-32, I just couldn’t get it to spray like the reduced epoxy.
Certain parts were pretty flat and perfect while others had peel, so it all comes down to my inexperience.
No moisture from my smaller compressor or problems with the cooler weather so I’m happy that the extra sanding is all I have to worry about.

Thanks, a test panel I started with had a lot of dust in it despite my excessive plastic sheeting. I chose to spray everything with the fans off and then just turn them on for a couple of minutes afterwards. Now there’s nothing settled that won’t sand off.

Wetsanding post-paint was yet another part of the paint process I heavily underestimated. I have enjoyed the late nights and each panel has come out better than the last, I’d like to say it is from an increase in skill, but I believe an increase in patience is more accurate. You truly have to see each step through to 100% perfection and then the buffing is the shortest and most satisfying step.
My stages were:
800 for some peeled flat panels
1000-1500-2000-3000
Each stage with mirka white guide coat
Then cut with 3D 500
Polish with 3D 520
Halfway through the panels my compressor decided to die, I’m yet to replace it but instead I turned to blocking the panels rather than DA, and although the process is obviously longer, the results seem better and I feel more in control of the results.
There is still some panels remaining, as well as all the lower rear panels to do but I’m confident in the end result. I think the results are near perfect on some panels, and maybe too nice for this stage in the build so it’s likely that at completion I’ll do some paint correction to get it’s absolutely perfect.
Black is exactly like they warn you, and already a pain to keep clean.
The build is really enjoyable now. Doors going together, final soundproofing, gapping, seals. Etc.
I also replaced the speedtech engine mounts with ICT adjustable a so I could position the engine another inch back.
I don’t get the same amount of time to keep this thread up to date but have faith that the build is still progressing.
