Hey Guys,
Made some more progress on the Camaro build.
We have knocked the "punch-list" down to 4 pages from 10.
The hood and front spoiler came out awesome and I cannot be more pleased with the fit, finish and quality of everything else.
Still a lot of things to do, still a work in progress.
Thanks to all for all the positive feedback on the build.
Here are some shots from the other day.

Hey Ray - We tried doing some video of the car running parked but the sound just does not translate well. I can tell you this though, the boom tube set up we have with the inline muffler deal is way loud. It mellows some once at temperature but it is still a lot louder than my old Flowmaster setup. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the exhaust system is almost half as long as a traditional setup to the rear bumper so the sound is a lot more powerful. I would have to imagine your set up with the mufflers should be a little more quiet but still overall a loud mama-jamma. Once the car is "done" we will do some proper video of the car at speed as well as some "drive-bys" to get the full effect. Keep up the great work on the bug!

Did I miss where the hood came from? It looks awesome. What is the gauge lineup? this car is awesome and I absolutely love the color. Probably one of the more radical first gen builds in a very subtle/beautiful color.

Hey Stephen - Thanks for the comments.
The hood is my stock 67 SS that we customized. We extended the height making it closer in dimension to a Cowl Induction hood and laid in the gauge pods along the back side using plain ol' muffler tube.
The funny thing is we have only about $25 in total materials in the custom hood but over 100 hours of work into it!!:)
The gauges are your "old standards": oil pressure; water temp; fuel pressure; oil temp; volts; and one unused boost gauge.

Maybe I missed it, but how is the body attached to the frame? Pics would be nice, :) .
Page 3 & 4 of the thread go into detail how we connected the chassis to the frame.
In a nutshell, there is a "sub-structure" frame welded to the Body that provides support and mount points.
The Chassis has gussetts in various key structural areas (rocker, axle, trunk) that bolt to the Body framework.
Also we used the first 1' of the Camaro Subframe welded to the Cup Chassis to install the Camaro Rad Support.
Here are some quick shots showing the mount points:
You can just see the Body "Frame" coming up from the rocker and around the inner wheel house:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/05/CamaroBuild71-1.jpg
You can see the Chassis mounts at the front frame rails, frame rocker area and over the rear axle area:

It is clear that you have really put some work into the hood. I like the fact that it is a fresh idea, but still looks right on the car.

I love this car. Will it be licensed?
Oh yes, street legal. We made every effort make the car legit.
We have a "street-rod" style window defroster and cable-driven wiper system purchased from "Yogis" (well known street-rod part supplier).
All the lights are functional. We could not fit the RS reverse lights in the rear valance panel due to the close proximity of the fuel cell, so we have these tiny, high-intensity LED lights that are actually the bolts for the license plate.
The doors are normal and operate just like any other Camaro.
The windows are power glass. Wanted power windows so there would be not be any thing what-so-ever protruding from the interior door panels. A safety deal to me.
We went as far as installing an aftermarket GM steering column so we have operating turn signals and hazards.
Of course passing inspection is one thing, being socially accepted by the fuzz is another. Some officers are by the book and will ticket me for the loud exhaust, some may just let it slide.
You know the saying......."I would rather beg for forgiveness than ask for permission".:)

Its amazing how your mind works going into a build......."Oh no sweat, we will be out of fab in 3 months, done with paint in 2 more, final assembly.........yeah I should be cruising in less than a year". Holy-ess, I had some serious mis-calculations on how long things would take.

FWIW anytime a cop would bring up the loud exhaust issue I would say "Loud exhaust???.....how can Harley after Harley after Harley ride aroud loud as H ell, big packs of them blowing everybodies eardrums out and nobody says anything....give me a break!" and roll your eyes....thats usaually the end of that.

Hey Scott...
Just checkin' in to see if you've made any progress on the car's final touches? :fingersx:
It's been a CRAZY busy summer this year... everything that was postponed in the oilfield last year because of the price of oil has gone gangbusters this summer playin' catch up with the needed projects! It has killed our car-building momentum...
I hope your car hasn't realized the same... it's SOOOO close!!
I hope things are going well for you and your Nascar Camaro.

Hey Guys – Long time no update – my bad.
Was hoping to show finished car by now, but as in life, other priorities come first.
Ray and his awesome “Satan’s Lady Bug” said I better post an update soon or I may find coal in the ole’ Christmas stocking!
So the Camaro is almost done. So, so close. The car was just delivered to the upholstery shop this week. The gentleman doing the interior is a seasoned veteran whose completed street rods consistently win awards at the top shows. I am not looking to be in any car shows and my interior is a no frills, all business approach. Simple and purposeful – no bells and whistles, just plain black all around. I am very excited to see the results. Scheduled to be done in 2-3 weeks.
Before the current position at the upholstery shop, we have been aggressively knocking off all the to-do items form the punch list. Started at over 200 items several months ago. We are now under 25. All of the interior wiring, window tracks power windows assemblies, electric door poppers & switches, interior lighting, weather stripping, re-chromed vent window frames & glass install have been complete. Once back from the upholstery shop the only thing needed to be done on the inside is the plumbing and install of the fire system and install of the safety harnesses.
The entire hood gauge wiring and plumbing is done and functional as well as the rest of the smaller electrical items on the list. One cool feature is that we fabricated electrical posts behind the license plate frame so if the batteries ever go dead we can boost the system from outside the car. We needed to do this as we have door and trunk popper systems. We went with a 1969 Camaro license plate frame that hinges down to access the posts. The carbon fiber air cleaner has been modified, cleared and installed. We had extra spoiler support braces and used them to lock down the radiator.
One very cool recent acquisition is the Goodyear Racing Tires and Aero NASCAR Wheels. Can’t wait to see how the Camaro looks with them installed.
My builder and I set a date of February 1st to knock off the remaining punch list items once the car is back from upholstery. We are going to re-do the front Lexan with a thicker and longer piece that goes deeper into the cowl and will look better. Also re-doing the hood pins so the cables come out of the hood plate rather than having all that slacked cable bouncing around the nose of the car. Still need to do the rear spoiler install, front spoiler support brackets, front anti roll bar, horn install and a host of other small tasks. After February 1st, the car needs to go back my body guy for several small touch ups and to be fully buffed and polished. Hope to be doing road tests and shake downs in early March.
Once 100% complete we are doing a video and pictorial at Charlotte Motor Speedway with the Camaro in the spring. Looking forward to getting that whole deal together.
Also shooting for the RTTS - New Jersey Pro-Touring event being hosted by our very own Bill Howell in April. Can’t wait!
Have a great Holidays everyone!

Thanks a LOT for posting an update! We were all anxious to see the progress. I know it's been a long haul for you and I can just imagine how excited you are to be able to bring the car to some events this year.
The attention to detail in this car is awesome! I look forward to seeing it with the Aero wheels and Goodyear tires... They should look right at home with the rest of the build! I'm assuming they are 15" diameter wheels... Do you have the typical smaller diameter, wider rotors on the car to fit the 15" wheels? What Nascar couldn't run in height for the rotors they made up for in width!
Happy Holidays and it should be a great NEW YEAR for us all!!

We did the exact wheel/brake set up from a Cup racer. 15" Aeros' Wheels with Alcon six pistons calipers up front with the "undersized" rotors you mentioned. And yes they are some wide suckers! I went with a treaded Goodyear "sports-car" tires that has a decent compound for asphalt and will pass the snuff test if I do a little street driving around town.
Yes Ray...you said it......its been a long haul! Never ever thought it would take this long but I always wanted to build it right the first time without cutting corners.....which means more time and $$$. Oh God.....the money.....I don't even want to think about that! I have not bought a new pair of jeans in like four years thanks to my "hobby"!

I went to the NASCAR HOF a few weeks ago. Amazing place. Lots to see. So much to read. The old race cars displayed were very cool.
My brakes are exactly what is run on the cup cars. As my chassis is all cup car, I had the Billet Wheels made custom with the 5 on 5 bolt pattern. Was one of the few sets of "new" wheels that would allow such a large center hub to go through the wheel center.
You said it - the rotors are "wide"!!

As for the Hall - I literally work 2 buildings over from it, so its not like I haven't had the opportunity to go check it out, I took my parents over to see it as there visiting from Chicago. It really is a cool place, and I spent around 3 hrs there and still didn't look at everything.

The Lower Control Arms are actually steel units that have been nickel plated. I sent a variety of parts off to Charlotte Plating to get plated. The finished color/hue varies from part to part. All of the NASCAR teams do this to key strength parts for the main reason that they can see any structural defects through the plating rather than paint that can hide a potential problem. The plating process was amazingly affordable. Example - entire rear end - $50, control arms - $25 each, etc., etc.. The plating is pretty durable but will chip if abused. Really not a big deal....if the part gets that bad after time I can always replate em'.

Thanks Wes - I am taking another NASCAR driving school at Charlotte Motor Speedway this spring. Part of the early instruction allows you on the track in your personal car with an instructor to learn the proper "line". It is way cool to be on the banking in your own car - the only bummer is its only for two or three laps and you are not permitted over 60 mph. They will not allow a banzai run on their track unless its in a pre-approved driving school race car. Friend of mine is gonna shoot video - won't be white-knuckle stuff - but should still be fun!
P.S. - Your Formula is so cool!

The seats, door/side panels, A-pillars and roll bar padding are going in this week. Still need to fabricate some aluminum doorsill plates and install. Next up is the fire system, seat belts and window net as well as the push-to-talk switch (for line lock & horns).
After that we still have to install the front roll bar and hardware, front and rear spoilers and braces, chassis alignment and some miscellaneous wiring. Also re-doing the Lexan windshield as the first one does not look right – needs to be “taller” and dive “deeper” into the cowl area. Still needs to go back to the body shop for two small touch ups as well as a complete buff/polish.
Looking to have all of the above done by March 1st which leaves the better part of 3 or 4 weeks to do shake-downs and work out any bugs prior to the Run To The Shore event on April 2nd.
I am jonzing so bad – can’t believe I am this close to actually being done.

I actually contacted DSE late fall to do some custom finish work on the car, spoke at length with Trent, sorry to hear he left, then some talks with Kyle who said you guys were swamped-busy which I fully understand - so our schedules could not match up. Hope to do some business with DSE on the next build.
I did buy the DSE RS headlight kit from Stacey a while back and got a great tour of your shop - professionalism and class at its best.
I live in NY and work for XV Motorsports building modern Mopars so I know what its like to have a shop beyond busy. Good way to be in this day and age. The Camaro is being built in NC as my brother works close by at HMS and I have many contacts/pals in the area helping with the build. I come down once a month or so to help turn some wrenches and soon to do some shakedown runs.
What is Kershaw? A track?
And your Bird is way cool - very nice combo of look, stance, colors, wheels, etc.!

Got a tremendous amount of work done the past few weeks.
The “punch-list” is down to a handful of small items.
Had to swap radiator due to leak found. Was able to get a good swap on a sharp C&R. Had to make a new fill tank for it but in the end worth the effort. Also in the "better-to-find-out-now category" also had to get two new batteries.
Car is now at body shop for small touch ups and full buff/polish. Also redoing the Lexan for a better fit.
From there spoilers go on, some small wiring details, 3M clear install at various locations, install of new batteries and mounts, horn install, and a small list of various other tasks.
Will be doing road tests and shake downs first week of March.
Wicked psyched for the Run to the Shore event on April 2nd.
Look forward to seeing many of you there.

You said it Ron....................literally years have gone by building my dream car.........so many ideas and plans changed along the way.......so many areas of the car started one way, then ended up another.........I soldiered on with my builder all this time as he switched shops not twice, but three times during the construction...................plus all the ups and downs of regular life..............I got real sick four years ago and the last thing on my mind was finishing the car.....thankfully fully recovered now, but health issues will put your life in perspective real fast and make you realize as much as we love our hobby, these are just cars.......and lastly the whole money thing..........never ever thought I would go as far as I did on the cost side of things.....many late nights on the computer I have debated over "Hmmmmm, buy a new pair of boots to replace the ones I have with holes in them or buy that sharp set of anodized AN fittings???? What to do???".............in the end I can say it was worth all the sacrifices and challenges..............although doubt I will build another car to this degree again......................although I did see a certain 68 Charger down the street from me with a "For Sale" sign on it.....wonder how much he wants for it??.............and the cycle begins again!!!!!! :)
Look forward to seeing you and your Stang at RTTS!!

More progress as we hit the home stretch:
Just got the wheels and tires mounted – can’t wait to get them on the car to see how they look!

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/NASCARWheelsTires1-1.jpg
The interior is almost done – some in progress shots below including the custom deal we had to do in the no-longer-a-back-seat area:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/CamaroInterior5-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/01/CamaroInterior3-1.jpg

Still feverishly working on last minute punchlist items. Wrenches are turning on the Camaro as this is being written. Spoilers go on last.

Hey Sean, Ray + PT Guys,
We made a major push to make the RTTS back in April. Countless hours were going into the Camaro right up to the night before. I had traveled to NC from NY a few days earlier with my truck/trailer and all my gear ready to have some fun at NJMP. It just was not meant to be. There were just too many areas of the car that needed attention prior to going balls-out on a road course. For safety’s sake we called it off. I was disappointed, to say the least. Had not made any PT posts lately as I was kind of embarrassed that I said “we would be there” and never made it. A bummer all the way around.
So for the past 2 months-plus we have been working through the kinks and making headway to being done and meeting my ridiculous attention to detail requirements.
Here is just a sampling of what has had to be tweaked/changed/altered/replaced or redesigned. Some of the tasks were done in an hour – some have taken weeks:
- Had to completely cut out and replace the roll bar upper tubes. Major engineering snafu – climbed into the finished car put on my racing helmet and realized the helmet hit the bar to the upper left. Major bummer. Headliner out, over-protect the rest of the interior then whiz wheel out the offending bars, weld in the redesigned tubes, paint all areas needed – was not a pretty site.
- Had to remove the seat brackets and redesign to lower seats further into car – similar issue as above – helmet hitting roof.
- “Argued” with my carburetor for way too long. Spent too many hours trying to make it idle. The carb would work great at anything over 2K RPMs. Wound up buying a new Holley 950 HP – works great now.
- “Argued” with my radiator as well. Had cooling passage issues. Wound up removing it and got a good deal on a used C&R. Had to rework stainless steel radiator hoses/lines to accommodate new rad.
- Had to make an entirely new Lexan windshield. The previous unit was an off-the-shelf Harwood unit – nothing wrong with the quality – the problem was it was not “long” enough and did not travel far enough into the cowl area. It did not look right with the windshield ending above the cowl. Had one on my pals who is a fabricator for a Cup team come over and make a new one from a new sheet of Lexan. While we were at it we installed a set of windshield braces – came out trick
- Had to replace the Vent Window Glass – bought the new pieces long time ago – defective - never realized the “bubbles” in the middle of the glass – looked awful – especially after being tinted. Got new, perfect glass thru NPD. Royal pain in the ass taking vent glass in and out.
- Paint issues – my painter did a great job all around – the problem we encountered was with the clear coat – it laid on well at first – however after we buffed it out it was way too hazy and showed surface scratches too easily. We are switching to a House of Color clear. Thousand times easier to say, than do. Car will need to be at painter for most of July. Bummed? Yes. But in the end the extra work here will be worth it.
There are a hundred other “little-things” that came up – as with any custom build – you deal with each issue and move forward. The “punch-list” items were over 100 back in March – down to a dozen or so a week before RTTS – then back over 100 after stepping back and re-evaluating all the areas. We have been doing well lately and getting stuff sorted out. Getting close mechanically, should be done by end of this month (I might hold the record for longest time to complete a project). Have put almost 100 miles road testing – car drives fantastic and is an animal in the “twisties”. Looking forward to enjoying the car later this summer.
Thanks for all of the continued interest.
- Scott

There is NO deadline (except what is self-imposed...) and NO one wants you to just show up for show up sake... Naturally, we want to see you happy and the car safe and ready to have fun with. There's no shame in doing the right thing!
Your punch list looks normal and understandable. There's not much "normal" about fitting a Camaro body to a race car... Custom everything. It should be expected to have the kind of things you have had to do and re-do. That's just part of the fun of building a one-off creation!
I'm really happy to hear you're knocking the list out and will be on the road for good very soon.

Hey guys! Camaro became closer and closer to being 100% done as the summer rolled into fall. The finish line was very much in sight until we took a step back to admire our work and decided some more improvements were needed to get it really “right”.
I spent most of this season focusing on working out any and all mechanical gremlins. Got the Camaro to the point where everything is working the way it should. After a couple hundred test miles and tuning the car runs and drives great.
Switched gears then to correct some cosmetic issues that I thought could be improved. Since I want the finished car to be just that, finished, I did not want to over look any area that at this stage of the game could be made better. With this being said I was never very happy with the final paint surface as well as the gaps and paint edges on the body. The metallic paint looked great in some areas but was a little blotchy in others. Then this blotchiness got sealed under the clear. Also we made the wrong choice in going gloss black on the hood, rockers and tail panel. The gloss black and very delicate clear allowed for too many surface scratches that were driving me crazy. Lastly, the door and fender gaps were not as good as they could be. My painter and I made the only decision we could – repaint - so back to the body shop to start the process again. With lessons learned we set out to correct our mistakes. Improved all of the gaps and edges. Used a better sealer that laid down more evenly. My painter got a new spray gun that in his words was twice as good as anything he had used in his career. We used a more forgiving clear that allowed for a better finished result. Also, switched from gloss black to a black-matte clear on the hood, tail panel, rockers and spoilers. Finally we raised the black paint line on the rockers to jell better with the Camaro’s body lines. So all in all a huge undertaking to do at this stage of the project but well worth it in the long run. Did not want to have any regrets on any aspect of the build process and found it very worth while to correct the body issues now. All said and done I am thrilled with the results. Couple of pics below:

Applying the black matte clear this week and then full throttle with all of the wet sanding and polishing. We should be all done in the next week of two. Exterior reassembly is fairly simple – bumpers, mirrors, grill, lights, etc. – not much trim to deal with and no locks or door handles. Car then goes to clear-bra specialist in Charlotte for application to lower valance, spoiler and areas behind wheels for chip protection.
The Camaro is not intended to be a trailer queen – many dates circled on the calendar for some road course thrashing – but still wanted the best finish on the car possible. Think we are getting there. Have a good friend who is a “pro-photo-video-ographer” to do a video/pic shoot as soon as we are back north with the car. Looking forward to posting some finished vids and pics then.
Thanks for all the kind words and continued interest. Day of nirvana will come soon……………..strapped in the Camaro on pit road at an open track event with all of my Pro-Touring.com pals………………..awaiting the green flag.
Can’t wait.

Hi Ron,
So looking forward to hangin' 10 at RTTS. Hope Bill and the gang schedule the event a little later in April or even May so the weather cooperates more. After we got the Camaro well sorted out we did some road testing on some very vacant roads in the hills outside of Charlotte..........no Kyle Busch antics at 140+.........but were able to "safely" push the limit slightly to feel the car at speed. Also found a big ole vacant flat asphalt lot to test hard turns, braking, etc.. Overall everything feels good. Real test will be at the open track. If all goes well I may attend the Good Guys show at the end of this month at Charlotte Motor Speedway. They have an autocross event there..........while my car is better suited for open track I am interested in seeing how it does between the cones. Looking forward to blasting around The Lightning Circuit with you and the Stang!
Not sure if you saw this small vid we made over the summer - nothing too serious - just fun:

Autoshield in SE Charlotte?
I had a customers car done there. Complete custom cut full frontal. Full fenders, hood and bumper, and mirrors. My customer was not happy at all, edges were not cut cleanly, jagged and not smooth, some bubbles, didn't pull windshield squirters but cut around them. I don't install these products, but I think wrapping that material around an edge will no doubt roll up, rather than just cut it back from an edge a 1/16".
I think these guys bank on plotter cut installs for the bulk of their business. Custom cut is another animal.

Not sure. My builder in Cornelius has the contact, and from what he tells me it is an "independent" guy who works mostly out the dealerships on Independence Blvd - I believe his quasi-headquarters are Hendrick BMW - but my builder told me he is a mobile outfit and would come to us. I have seen his work on two other projects my builder worked on - Audi R8 and Ferarri Modena - both installs looked right.
Separate note - trying hard to attend the Charlotte Good Guys show end of this month - hope to see you there. Maybe autocross the Vette???

My Camaro is finally home! Exactly 2,200 days since my first Pro-Touring Project Update Post! Yep…..you read that right……..that was Two-Thousand-Two-Hundred Days!!!! Time, money, patience and more time and money……..all part of the car building process here for me.
Spent the last week in October doing some tweaks with my builder, some test drives on some awesome North Carolina roads, brought the car by my brother’s shop at Hendrick Motorsports to show some of the friends I have made there that have helped out on the project the final product, then topped the week off by attending the 2011 Good Guys Southeastern Nationals at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Was great fun! Got an amazing spot on pit road to display the car, saw some awesome cars, got to see some heavy metal attack the autocross, met some very nice people at the show, and got to cruise the race track under the lights on Saturday night! Attached a few pics below!
My big plans for the winter are straight forward – work hard to tweak and improve all operating systems. Even though the car runs and drives great – I have a punch list of things that need to be addressed. As we all know…..they are never really done……it’s an evolution.
In the process of putting together a “thank you list” for all of the family, friends and vendors that helped make my build a reality. The list is quite long. Amazing how many relationships you make in building a car……it’s been a great experience throughout. Very much looking forward to expanding my friends base by attending as many Pro-Touring events as possible in the future. Hope to see many of you there!

Hey Guys,
Been awhile.....figured it was time for a quick update.
Got my first ever ink from attending the Goodguys South Eastern Nationals back in October. Pretty jazzed about it considering I have been reading car mags since I was a pup and always dreamed of having my car grace some pages.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/03/CamaroGoodguys-1.jpg
Been going bumper to bumper on the Camaro since November. Every operating system on the car is in the process of getting sorted out. Yes the car was "done" (done said lightly).............however.........I want to say this in a somewhat "nice way".............lets just say the car was NOT safe and it needed a more professional touch.
Rather than open up too many areas at once I have focused on specific sections and work on each one until complete. Keeps things organized and allows for target completion dates instead of being all over the map unsure when it will be done. With that being said and considering where the progress is now and what needs to still be done I unfortunately will not make the RTTS again this year.....too many areas to button up before the date...and I want to get some seat time in the car before I thrash it on the race track.
Here is a shot of one of the many new parts going on NASCAM.........custom built radiator with built in Oil and Power Steering Cooler, Twin Fans and custom shroud:

Rad built by Wizard Cooling:

Safety concerns start with the suspension, lots of areas inbetween, and end with the brakes. If any one of these areas are not 100% perfect in design and execution the car is not safe........
I am not going to point fingers here but there was some very shoddy execution in most of the above areas.......my fault for having a car built 700 miles away........lesson learned........doing the appropriate corrections now.

Do not have any direct pics of the mounting area......but it is very basic.....solid mounted.....two angle mount tabs per side exhaust boom tube with solid aluminum spacers (1"") bolted directly to rocker frame rail and nearby chassis frame rail.

Very true about the date. A lot of the country may not realize the northern climate pulls the car off the road and winter thrashing ensues. First week of April is literally the earliest the NY cars emerge from the garage, and it allows little to no time for some shake down seat time before this track event.
I believe it was only b/c of that though that Bill was able to rent the track out in the first place, so I'm not complaining.
Scott, there is still a month. Keep thrashing. I'm in the same boat or worse- with my car in Maine and me sitting here recovering (hopefully) from eye surgery- I'm still leaving the door open for participating. Let's agree to spectate if nothing else. Better than sitting home!

I am jamming on the car every night after work........if we can get a few choice areas straightened out there is a slim possibility of making the date.......will see.

So true Ken in regards to the end of hibernation season.......but as you said Bill got a smoking deal on the track (very reasonable cost for a full day of fun) and goes to great lengths to make this date happen............major thanks to all his efforts.
Hope you are feeling better and getting back to normal.......Dirk told me of the seriousness of the procedure as well as the tough healing process.....take it slow and you will be back in the drivers seat before you know it.
Keep us posted as to Jake's progress on the Mustang.........your ride is gonna be so bitchin' when done......really like all the changes you are making!!!!
Will keep plugging along in the garage......if we both don't make it to RTTS with our preferred rides maybe we go as spectators or Dirk's support team!!!!
Catch up soon!

Thanks Sean - I want to see your car too - so effing cool yours is.......love the theme from end to end.....rockin'.
Wrenching literally every night on the car......still so much to do....if there is any chance I will be there......really wish the RTTS was in June or later!!!
Dont sweat it Scott, But if the car is cruise-able or you are able to go without it.... definitely come down... Lots of amazing cars/people and it will definitely get you inspired to get out there and beat on the car.... Hope to see you in April!

Hey Scott,
After all the time and money you put in the car, I surely don't blame you for doing everything you can to make the car perform as it should and be safe as possible at the same time. I commend you for not throwing caution to the wind in the spirit of just wanting to get out there and make some deadline or particular event. We only get one go 'round in this life and all it takes is one mistake to change your future forever!! :drive2:
AND NONE OF US WANT THAT!!
The events will still be there when you are ready!! :)
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK AND KEEP US POSTED.

Still plugging away on all of the "corrections":
The "bad":
All of the top NASCAR teams drop a piece of shrapnel inbetween the Fuel Cell Bladder and Fuel Can, right?

So it's been a few more months. How are things coming along on this amazing build?
Thanks for asking. Its been a real fun summer. I have been turning wrenches and tuning on the car all season all the while enjoying some behind the wheel time as I make the adjustments.
There have been three different types of driving experiences:
1) going for a test drive after making major changes (i.e. - carb, suspension, electrical) and nervously wondering if I will make it back
2) going for an early a.m. thrash session on some desolate roads north of me that allow to really test the car - scared myself a few times - however the car is so damn stable it really does not get unsettled at speed unless the road is real rough
3) the after-work-cruise - sometimes my favorite - just hopping in the Camaro and going out for an hour or so ride.
Literally had to start from scratch with the front suspension. I have replaced UCAs', Springs, Spindles, Sway bar, Sway Bar Arms, Modified LCAs', and replaced all hardware. The NASCAR Chassis' are so interchangable that it was quite tricky to find the right combination for street/track use - very much schooled myself on everything involved and now have the suspension in A+ order. Pics of front end stripped down here:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/CAM6-1.jpg
Had to re-do the LCA with new shock and anti roll bar mounts - then powder coated them gun metal:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/CAM1-1.jpg
Sorted out all of my hood gauges and installed some LED lights in green - looks real trick at night:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/CAM3-1.jpg
All the hard work under the hood has paid off - everything is nice and tidy now:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/CAM4-1.jpg
Standing tall at a car show with some pals:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/CAM2-1.jpg
There were 10,000 other areas on the car I have had to repair, replace, adjust, tune or flat out make from scratch. As we all know they are never truly done...but I feel like I am close...still a little punch list of stuff that I have to get around to doing...but nothing major.
Its been a long road, from start to finish, but at this stage every minute spent tuning or driving is now a very pleasurable experience.
Looking forward to a few open-track events before the cold weather hits – hope to make some Go-Pro videos of all the action.
Will keep you posted!
- Scott

So the original set up was that far out you had to start from scratch? it must have been really far out, what happened there? was it totally undriveable?

Oh and Im in a delima(sp?) right now.....where did you run your fuel and brake lines? did you run them under the car on the frame like a street car or through the interior like the race car had originally? I can think of reasons for doing it either way. thanks D

If you have not discovered already these racecars can be built/assembled with a wide variety of spindles, ucas', lcas', sway bars, etc.,etc.
- One major issue I had to tackle was to relocate front sway bar tabs on lca to allow for more steering radius. The spindle hockey stick arms where the tie rods connect only come in two sizes - tight and tighter. Left racecar stock I could not safely negotiate a turn at a street corner - car would not turn enough.
- Also had to clearance lower shock mount due to increased steering radius.
- Then there is ucas. Many sizes available. Needed to shorten mine up to maintain proper alignment. Very short description here of a quite time consuming tuning task.
- Sway bar arms needed modifying for increased steering radius.
- Swapped springs, front & rear, several times until I found a nice setup that works great on street and track and allowed for good ride height adjustability.
- The final deal was the alignment. There is an eccentric adjustment on the DS Front and PS Rear. Lots of tweaks needed to get right wheelbase as well as proper alignment.
In regards to your questions - I ran Tech AFX Teflon Fuel Lines down frame rails from end to end. The Teflon lines are super tough and do not allow fumes to leak through like braided lines can.
Brakes lines same deal. Spent the extra time to bend my own lines to contour to the frame rails. Attached everything nicely with these cool billet mounts. Check out "Inline Tube" - great source for brake parts.

You know my turning radius blows too, but Im not there yet. I see the Nascars on TV cranked to the lock in a spin or something and say "My car won't turn anywhere near that sharp! WTF!" lol
I was under the car tonight, Im going to go under the car too with the lines. Thanks for the tip on the Teflon fuel lines I'll check it out. D

I got a chance to see Scott's car in person yesterday, meeting up with his fried Phil and Peter (GMachineDartGT) and Dirk (VanZuuk1) for the Harbor Island Mamaroneck show. As you might guess from this thread, the attention to detail is just incredible. It's a Camaro shell on a racecar, but with fit and finish unlike any racecar that I've seen.
At one point, I pointed out to Dirk that there were no less than 8 people peering at his car at the same time. Between Scott, Phil's second gen, Dirk's tasteful '69, Peter's Mopar and my Mach 1 all next to each other, we had the pro-touring thing well represented at the show. Let's get the same crew together without the lawn chairs and put some miles on the cars!

First off this build is amazing!!
After seeing your car and shortrack's chevelle I did some searching and found this 55.
So of course now I want to go down this path as well.....
I did notice that in one of your posts (which shortrack commented on as well) that you mentioned modifications to allow a more streetable turning radius...
Were you able to solve this issue sufficiently with your relocation of the shock and sway bar mounts?
Thanks for the great thread!!
