Some were asking if this could be done. Well my "body-guy" & I are giving it a shot. What you have here is a new McLaughlin NASCAR rolling-road-course-chassis that I am grafting together with a 1967 Camaro body. Extensive planning, measuring & head scratching :hammer: occurred long before the torch was put to metal. We are past three quarters done on all the metal work to date. The few shots you see here are about four weeks ago. Once all metal work is done we will assemble all components for test fitting, then disassemble for paint work. Body is fully removable and bolts to frame work.

Wow! My NASCAR theme was just to have some of the components (such as: 14" mirror, Tilton pedals, window net, Basset/Aero looking wheels, quick release steering, full floater 9", Kirkey Seats, etc.) This goes way beyond, really cool!
One question: will it have roof flaps? That would be plain wicked.

I could write a book about this build. Rather than droning on for three pages I'll try and write a little about each area.

- The Body - We literally removed the entire floor and trunk area from the Camaro along with 75% of the firewall. The cowl area has an entire substructure of 1 1/2" tubing reinforcement. The body substructure continues from the firewall under the rockerpanels and up and over the rear wheel wells, then flows into the trunk where each side is tied together at the rear of the body (rear valance). This frame work bolts to gussets welded on the NASCAR chassis in several even locations. The rollcage has been narrowed to accomodate the body with its hinged doors. The entire body can safely be removed from the chassis without twisting or warping. Remember making car models and one of the last things you did after assembling the chassis was slide the body over the car? Thats basically what we have done. The benefits of doing this is a more structuraly sound body. Also after all the roll cage bars are finished we can remove the body to do all of the paint work on the cage. The enitire chassis is getting painted separate from the body. The first 12" of a Camaro subframe were welded to the front of the chassis. Camaro radiator support and fenders bolt to their stock locations. The firewall was reworked under the windshield area where NASCAR meets Camaro. Since the motor is further back than stock a cutout was designed for the distributor. The original Camaro firewall tag is intact along with the stamped VIN number below the blower motor.

A couple of questions.

-Did you leave the wheelbase at 110".
-How closely did the "greenhouse" section of the chassis match up with your camaro's body

Very cool project.

ZuperZport
10-29-2005, 06:39 AM
Tad -
Yes, the wheelbase is 110". Fortunatly the truck arm suspension has "eye hook" mounts towards the front of the arm that allows for slight adjustment fore and aft, it has allowed us to center the rear end in the wheelwell just right.

The roof section fits like a glove with the Cup car cage. We kept 80% of the cage intact. We removed the a-pillar bars, door bars & roof hoop. We then used a Competition Engineering conversion kit (3 pieces) that gave us a new a-pillar that contoured correctly with the Camaro windshield rake and also gave us a new roof hoop that tied everything in nicely.

Last update on the NASCAR/Camaro was well over a year ago.I unfortunately struggled through some tough times physically and financially in early 06'. As one could imagine hot rod projects take a back seat to getting healthy. I am happy to say I am feeling much better now and work has become something I absolutely can't wait to get to in the morning. So the NASCAR/Camaro project has been full steam for about three months now. ALL of the metal fabrication is now complete. Some serious hours were spent getting eveything sorted out. Hey everyone,

We dis-assembled the entire chassis and sent it out for media blast prior to mocking up the roll cage. There is another 90 FEET(!!) of tubing that will be installed to complete the deal. The whole cage will be certified for racing/off road use. One bonus of going at it from scratch, as we have done here, is that we can install a new firewall with no holes drilled, so we will can drill holes as we deem necessary. T Next step is complete assembly of "bolt-on" parts and test fitting of everything else. After that the real fun begins because we can send the chassis out to powder coat and start plating and coating all of the individual components. AFTER THAT it really gets interesting because we can do FINAL assembly of the chassis and actually "road-test" the Cup Chassis with or without the Camaro body.

Just curious.. was this a joke? I hope your not actually seriously teasing about this car?

It does eat "so called ""g-machines"" for dinner". because a lot of the g-machines that people are building are never driven on the track or they are rocking 20+ inch wheels that are no good for actual racing. the title simply pointed out that this camaro is a real deal g-machine.. not a fake styled up pro-touring car. i dont mind show cars but call it what it is. and bob owens runs circles around just about everything in that car. the wing is completely functional too. just fyi.

ZuperZport

The chassis has received an entirely new roll cage from bumper to bumper. This was no easy feat, it took a lot of planning, measuring and experience along with more planning, measuring and experience to get the job done. The end result is a custom engineered cage system that will provide extreme safety and look good at the same time. Most of the bars are in place, with a few more will to be added after another “body test fit session”, then final welding and reinforcing will take place.

A “new” firewall has been fabricated using steel thicker than the standard Nextel Cup car to withstand years of abuse. The pedal assemblies and steering column have been mocked up. The whole chassis is getting “pre-assembled” as any project would prior to paint. All the Cup parts are getting either plated or powder coated. The modified “stock” Camaro dashboard is being “tweaked” to fit in the chassis and will provide a cool touch to the otherwise “all business” interior.

Many more custom things are being worked on as we speak. The custom “boom tube” exhaust system with electric open header cutouts is being fabricated. The chassis to body sections are having custom made “crush panels” made to fill the gaps between the two parts. The motor has custom made adjustable motor mounts. The standard NASCAR carbon fiber air cleaner assembly will be mated to the firewall for air induction through the lower windshield cowl vents. Custom made seat brackets tie into the roll cage for maximum protection. A real deal window net will be put in. Twin battery boxes will be implemented into the trunk area. As with any Cup chassis fully adjustable jack screws and panhard bar will be in place. Six piston monster brakes will be installed. We are even doing the belt driven rear gear cooler under the chassis.

More and more cool stuff to come. Will keep everyone posted. Thanks for your continued interest.

"Well as you can see from the attached pictures the guys at Muscle Motorsports have been working overtime to get the chassis sorted out. I have to say when you have the right people working on the job things go much smoother and the end results are 10 times more satisfying. I am extremely pleased with the knowledge, experience, professionalism and technical abilities that Adam and his crew at Muscle Motorsports have exhibited during the entire build up of the NASCAR chassis."

Those guys are great. They helped me out a bunch when it came time to buy the rear end for my car. The full-floating hubs are nice, but can the Nascar size studs and bolt pattern can be hard to find wheels for. I had to go through 2 sets with Fikse before I had to go to a tapered Chrysler stud that had the same size knurl as the hub. Good Luck with the rest of your project.

Hey guys,

Just catching up on some questions that were asked:

Q. Robert/Scogin918: What rear end are you guys using?
A. Going with the Ford 9" and 3:55 gears to start.

Q.kmcanally: Are you going to run the bb as shown in the pics? If so how will it be built?
A. Yep, staying with the rat motor. Was originally dynoed at 619HP with the Weiand high rise intake and 950HP Holley, but we are now going with a "low-rise" intake to incorporate the air cleaner. Gotta imagine we will lose 100+ HP with the intake swap. The motor is built to the hilt, ported and polished heads, big valves, big cam, big compression (11:1 I think)........last of the LS7s'.

Q.boodlefoof: Any idea what the final weight on the car is going to be?
A. I believe all Cup cars weigh in the same at 3400 lbs. I gotta imagine I will be a little heavier than that considering all the beef in the Camaro body. Will do an acurrate weigh in when car is done.

Q.shortrack: what are you going to do for an e-brake??.......wiring harness??
A. For now we will be using a basic Painless Wire setup. As far as the e-brake, no intentions as of yet, might just drive around with a cinder block in the trunk (just kidding).

We are using a 3.64. We'll see how it behaves with the T-56 before bringing it up (numerically that is). As far as the E-brake you could always go with the one for the driveshaft. Are you doing a differential fluid cooler? My yoke has the groove for the belt, but I haven't decided yet.

It is so nice to see the chassis on four wheels! As you can see most of the chassis fabrication is complete and bolt on parts have been test fitted. Still a few odds and ends to complete fabrication wise like the custom exhaust, battery boxes, etc. Should be taking everything apart within the next few weeks and ship the chassis off to paint while parts get plated and powder coated. The chassis is going to look super awesome after everything is in color and assembled.

Edit: It was late when I read the thread and my brain wasn't working well... at first I thought you were asking me what I estimated the weight would be on my project (around 2000-2200 pounds).

If you're building a full-frame, you can really drop a lot of weight by cutting out much of the Camaro's uni-body structure. You don't need all of the extra beef to resist twisting since the frame will be doing that. All you need is enough support to keep the body solidly attached to the new frame. With my Z project, the only uni-body structure that will remain is support around the rear window channel. While the frame will weigh around 325 pounds, I'm probably dropping about 200 pounds in structural sheetmetal.

As far as emergency brakes go I am just gonna wing it for now. I, for obvious reasons, will be super-duper careful where and how the finished car is parked.

Im not worried about actually using the e brake to hold the car......leaving it in gear will suffice anywhere I will ever park it......... but up here I will need an e brake to certify the car for street use.......(I was thinking about a roll control/ line lock) along with fore/aft adjustment of drivers seat and a couple of other stupid things.....

For the now the Camaro will ride on these:
B.F. Goodrich G-Force KDW - 245/40/18 Front & 275/35/20 Rear
Wheel Vintiques Billet Ralley Wheels - 18"x8" Front & 20"x9.5" Rear

For track days, some car shows, and whenever I can get away with them on the street, I will be putting on a wider front and rear wheel setup using the NASCAR Aero wheels in black with wide-as-can-be Goodyear racing tires. Trying to sort out tire and wheel sizes now.

Thanks for the continued interest. I have not gone anywhere. The Camaro is still "in progress". Lost about six months due to my builder relocating to a better facility. Would love to have the car done "yesterday" but I am sure you know any car project takes time.

There has been a ton of work done on the car in the past 4-6 months. A major amount of fabrication has been completed including:

- Rocker Panels (removable for body installation)
- Many custom sheetmetal filler panels
- Fuel Filler (LeMans Style)
- Roll Cage
- Dashboard
- HVAC System
- Wiper System
- Power Window & Door Poppers
- Twin MSD setup
- Switch Panel
- Boom Tube Exhaust with electric cut-outs
- Fuel Cell
- Battery Trays
- etc., etc.

Here are a few pics of the custom exhaust system we fabricated. The exhaust has an in-line muffler (somewhat quiet - think flowmaster loud) then when the electric cut-out butterflies are opened it transforms into a full open exhaust system exiting through the NASCAR "boom-tubes" (very LOUD). The cool thing about the cut-outs is you can partially open/close them for a variety of "tones".

- The inline mufflers are motorcycle racing mufflers. They are 10" long by 3" wide and slide into the existing 3" tube. Can't recall what brand they are.....will have to get back to you on that one..

- As far as the body & frame deal - we spent countless hours developing a plan on how to do this based on the Camaro and Cup Chassis dimensions prior to any labor. In short (and I mean really ommitting about three pages of explanations) we built a "sub-frame" that goes all the way around the Camaro body. Around the firewall, down the rockers, over the rear wheels across the trunk and back. Sounds simple but the amount of labor invloved doing this was extraordinary. Not mentioned here is the ridiculous amount of time customizing wheel wells, rocker panels, firewall, valance panels, fenders, trunk, etc., etc., etc. If you look closely at the previous post's pictures of the drivers's side rocker panel you can see the seam line. The exterior rockers are "bolted-on" after we place the body on the chassis. Same deal for the real valance. When fully assembled and finished painted the seams will be covered by the correct Camaro rocker molding that goes there. Bumper will cover the rear valance seam.

While not the most detailed pictures you can see portions of the new frame and the pickup points in these pictures:

Hey Guys,

The exhaust place that offers the inline mufflers is called “Car Chemistry” out of Waxahachie, Texas, (972) 937-7735 (www.carchemistry.com).

They have a variety of trick exhaust solutions for space constricted undercarriages.

Here is the link to what we used on my custom exhaust system -

http://www.carchemistry.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=19

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/04/MufflerInsert-1.gif

Another very good source for custom exhaust system components is “Specialty Products Design” out of Rancho, California, (888) 778-3312 (www.spdexhaust.com).

SPD does not offer mufflers, but practically every other neat item needed for custom installation. Check out their website or give Chris a call at SPD, super-helpful.

First question - Where did you get your Boom Tubes??? Are they Dr. Gas or some other brand? I really like the size of them. I need to build something VERY similar for my car.

Second question - Who is the manufacturer of the electric butterfly cut-outs? Could you show us how you control them for "partial" opening???

Thanks for your time and I hope things are going well on your project!!

The Boom Tubes and associated exhaust pieces were purchased through Hutch-Pagan Racing (704) 597-1372 - they are an all NASCAR parts supplier. Dr. Gas (https://www.drgas.net/ (https://www.drgas.net/)) has them also.

The Electric Exhaust Cut Outs were bought from DMH Performance (http://www.dmhperformance.com/). They operate using a toggle style switch that can be partialy opened or closed depending on how long the switch is activated.

Hey there guys,

The winter has been very productive and the Camaro is really taking shape. The build is on pace to be finished by May if all goes as planned.:fingersx:

The chassis is 99% complete. Actually adding final fluids this week and firing the motor. The suspenison, brakes, motor, exhaust, wiring, plumbing, cooling, plating, etc., etc., etc.,etc. and etc. is basically all done. Lots of different areas of the car start to come together and time and money is aimed in all directions. Had a number of suspension parts plated like the NASCAR racecars which came out great. Spent a small fortune on black AN fittings and Earl's black hoses....pricey but worth it. The stainless brake lines where a mission but came out great. Still a few details to sort out/finish but basically the chassis will be able to run and drive seperate from the body. We will do some preliminary shake downs with the chassis set up and motor tuning, hopefully curing any serious bugs before the body is mated to the chassis.

The body is having final test fitment of the Lexan windows but is otherwise 100% ready to be sprayed. An unGodly amount of time went into body prep.......she looks real sharp. Looking to a warm day in the next three weeks to spray the green. A week or so later after cure and wet sanding the body will have the headliner installed and then gets placed right onto the chassis.

From there my interior guy takes over. Kinda of a custom carpet deal with all the roll cage bars and no rear seat room, plus custom door panels and wrapped racing seats. Additional final body assembly is somewhat more simple but still a very long list of little details as with any car build.

Very much starting to realize this long strange trip I have been on for the last 4 1/2 years is finally reaching its destination. I am like a 5 year old jonzing for Christmas morning........I truly can't wait to be done!

We put a Lemans style fuel cap custom fabbed into drivers rear quarter panel.

Promised myself I would never struggle with the stock fuel filler area again. Every time I went to put gas in the old Camaro it would make a bloody mess......fellow Camaro owners know the deal....those new gas pump nozzles don't work well with stock Camaro fuel fillers.

I wish you were closer. I would love to take a closer look at the car. You have taken it a lot further than I did, but there are still some things that we both have that I'd like to check out.

The rear cooler vent is not shown in pics but is run through trunk area along with fuel cell venting.......kind of a custom install.

Hi Jeff -

With all the greenbacks running away from me on this project I can only dream of having extra $$$$ to get away for a road trip. I really hope I can, but still need an enclosed trailer. Not that the car will be a trailer queen but I would rather not drive it 1500 miles or so to get to/from an event. My car will be comfortable only in short bursts....not long hauls..........between the 5 mpg, loud exhaust and stiff suspension long trips would be tough.

Thought about an exotic engine, like a twin turbo or supercharged but figured I would keep it true to the NASCAR roots and run a big ol' carbureted big block motor like they did back in the day. Can always upgrade down the road, and will probaby build a high reving small block as close to what they run today.............. but way down the road when the sting of paying for this whole project cools down!!:)

quick question, since you went balls out in trying to make this as nascar possible, & since your brother works for a nascar team, have you thought about getting a professional driver to take it to the Oval and go bananas with it?

In the ol' days (read the 60s' and 70s') NASCAR used to run big C.I.D. motors - Ford used to run the 429 Cobra Jet (which became the street version Mustang Boss 429), Mopar had their HEMIs and I believe Chevy had the 454 and other motors.

As far as a pro driver..........would love to have anyone of these drivers (#24, #48, #88 or #5) take a spin around Lowes Motor Speedway with the Camaro but I doubt A) they would have the time for it and B) their contracts probably prohibit "risky" situations such as high speed driving in an unknown racecar. Would be cool though.......

Thanks CMarcus & Scott for the kind words.

Its been a mission but we are getting there!

The body assembly started a few weeks ago.

We got the headliner in, the rear power windows and tracks in, all of the interior wiring, etc. in...........very close to lifting the body onto the chassis. Have to do all of the weather stripping and "crush panels" that close the gap between the body and chassis. Fortunately all of the panels were pre-made and pre-fit prior to paint so installation should be easier.

Once the body is squared away and all of the mounts are secure we will be hanging the doors and all the front sheetmetal.

Still have all of the exterior hood gauges to go (6 of em'), the fire system, the window net, the carpeting, the Lexan windows, the fuel filler connection, the RS hideaway light system (have the DSE system - nice parts), the door panels and seats (seats already upholstered), the spoilers, and all of the exterior trim which is not much since there are no drip rails or door handles. Oh yeah still have to install the door and trunk poppers as well.

A little bit of a laundry list of items to go, but all manageable. Nice to know whatever part we put on it is for the "last time" and the end is near. Purposely not rushing to get it done as we do not want any errors and do not plan to drive it until the weather is better here (i.e. - spring time) but look forward to doing some shake-down runs during the winter.

So far not too many obstacles in the assembly process...............just painfully time consuming.............all the details and such...............no time to be cutting corners now so all the "little things" are getting attention now (i.e. - the vent windows looked good, but not great, sent them out to be re-chromed - stuff like that).

You guys are gonna think I am crazy but I bought one of those train horns from "Horn Blasters" and want to install it....................problem is the horns are so freaking big I have no space under the car for it!! Hopefully I will not have to mount it in the now wide open back seat area!

One of the funniest ones was where they got pulled over in the Merc Marauder by a officer and right when he walks up to the nose of the car they "blast" him. The officer was not amused.

Yeah, the video I attached is that one... When you get to the end of it the cop pulls them over because he's not using his blinkers... He asks him to operate them to verify they are in working order... when he gets to the front of the car, they BLAST him and he doesn't look too happy... I just wish the passenger would have kept the video going so we could see what happens next!! He had the camera hidden when the cop came to the driver's window. :lmao:

They also get busted for the tint on the windows! I would have hated to pay those fines!

Hey Scott,

Just checking in to see if you have any updates???

I SURE would like to see a video of your car running so I could listen to your boom tubes... You said they were loud... :seizure: I'd like to hear them...

I plan on running Spintech Mufflers with Boom Tubes on my car and I would REALLY like to hear how they sound... :headbang:

I like those horns!! can you fit them vertically behind the headlights? If you angle them, the sound bounces off the ground pretty well. I don't think you need to worry about losing any of the effect....LOL
I know they are probably 20" long, and about 12" wide (?) you could even separate them a little if it helps the packaging.
I have air horns in every car I have owned, no better satisfaction than to give an earfull to those careless drivers!
Now everybody has a damn phone in their ear.... FFUUU-WHAAAAAaaaaaa! pay attention! coming through! :1st:
Correction: those look like 9" floor tiles...them are some BIG horns. 15"x 22" (?)

Hey Guys -

We are making some progress with the Camaro. The doors are now on and all of the sheetmetal is at the shop for installation.

My body guy took a "long time" (body shop taking a long time?.....sound familiar everyone?) but for a reason. He is a paint manager for a Cup Team and has been clobbered recently working much overtime.....so my project took that much longer. I really don't care how long it takes as long as the finished product is at the level I want....which it is. I cannot be happier with the work so far and will always say that quality is much better than quantity.

Anyhow we have been busy working on any and everything else on the car. The fuel system is 100%, the headliner is in, the power windows and door poppers have been installed and we worked through some fitment issues with the body at the firewall where the cowl was interfering with the brake and clutch reservoirs. Many other areas of assembly have been tackled but more to go. You can't believe how many "little" details pop up during final assembly, but we are taking our time and doing it "right" the first time.

Killer paint. If you're familiar with the '67 camaro color "mountain mist metalic", how does it compare?

Amir, Ray, Ron, Scott, Jeff, John, Tony, Kevin, Wendell, CMarcus, MC84 - Thanks for all the kind words. Talking "shop" with fellow Pro-Touring pals makes the day much better.

Some quick answers to questions:

- Paint is 1967 Chevelle Mountain Green. Not sure how that compares to the Metallic Mountain Mist. My car looks more like a 7up can color.

- Wheels are Wheel Vintiques Billet Ralleys'. Also sizing up a set of genuine Aero NASCAR wheels and Goodyear Racing tires.
