Looking 4 Help

I'm at a standstill with my project due to numerous reasons, but I'm trying to meet members of this site located in the SF Bay Area willing to share their knowledge. Possibly help me with the build. I've been burned a few times by shops and am getting FED UP with them. I would also much rather gain some knowledge and hands on experience that I can use later on rather than just sit there and write a check for some work that won't get done right the first time. If it gets done at all. HELP I'm getting frustrated.

I applaud you for taking the initiative for learning how to do some of the stuff yourself. You'll have much more pride in your car at the end when you're the one with the blood and sweat in it! It feels great to say, "I did this," or "I installed that", rather than "I paid some guy $20K to build it and if something goes wrong, I have NO idea how to fix it!"

Plus, the $$ you save in labor costs can be used for other things; more mods, things for your place, keeping your significant other happy, etc.

Your right Steve, I'm a firm believer in taking pride in something you took part in. Not just paying for it and waiting for it to arrive in your driveway when its done. That doesn't work for me. Also, my better half will be glad for two reasons. One, I saved money learning how to do it myself without forking over big bucks. And two, when its done the keys get handed over to her. This will be her car. Lol.

I dont have many tools either to completely do a car at home. But I will buy them as I see fit. Hell, I've got 2 78 Malibus and a Nova Convertible to one day finish. So I can use the help. By the way, nice cars.

I'm in Berkeley area, what kind of work do you need? I just finished doing a complete front suspension including steerign box, all linkage, upper/lower tubular control arms, springs/shocks, C5 disc brake conversion, Changed out the headers to ram air manifolds, oil filter relocation kit, ajd. prop valve, master cylinder, hotchkis rear leafs, and a rear disc brake system(which took some time, it was a BOP rearend) all for under $2000 in 7 days(due to not getting parts in time) PM me and we can talk

Slow to respond but I will get to each of you SOON. Thanks for the responses by the way. Now for a little info on the car. Its a 78 Malibu w/ an LT1 & 4L60E in it. Full Hotchkis suspension w/ Edelbrock shocks & springs, Goodmark Hood, Autometer Guages and B-Body spindles w/ the 1LE brake conversion. It was a featured project for Car Craft Magazine. Some of you might have seen it. I was in the middle of aquiring parts for my blue 78 when I came acrossed it on EBay. The price was right so I drove to SoCal and picked it up. I seem to be hooked on these cars because I buy any/all articles & features on them. The most recognizable one to date that I can think of is Jason Herreras' in Texas (so if your a site member Jason, look me up I've got questions).

Now for MY issues with the car. I'm not big on claiming someone elses work as my own. Don't get me wrong, Henry Delos Santos & the guys at Car Craft did a hell of a job with it, but now I want to add to it. Baer Brakes, new rearend, different cowl hood and a few other things. I'm looking for help with the paint and fabrication among other things. And I wouldn't mind just hooking up with some people to help with ANYTHING related to OUR cars.

He hangs out alot at maliburacing dot com in the forums under the same name too....there aren't a whole lot of us over there that are into the g-machine aspect of the g-body but thats why I hang out here as well....if you need general info on the Malibu there's no place better though......I remember your car being built in the mag and also drooled over it alot while it was on ebay...only wish I wasn't 2/3's of the country away or I'd be helping too.....I've owned 5 malibus (still own #1 and #3) and 4 other g-bodies in the last 15 years. I'm a g-bodyaholic I guess

Hey there RatMalibu....I am interested in all Malibus. Not just Jasons. But most of the ones I've seen in the mags were restored to stock condition. His was the first that I saw that was modified. You've got a good looking Malibu yourself. Is that a spoiler on the trunk lid? Its intersting to see how these cars are gaining popularity. Especially since most muscle cars are skyrocketing in price. I've got 3 at the moment. Maybe I can turn to you for some help with any questions from time to time. I'm trying to get some photos up but they won't except the size of them. I'll have to work on it.

I've owned this car since 06/92....its been around the block a few times lol lots of changes and changed minds durring the process.
Yes its a spoiler on the back. It's a A&A specialties universal I got from Jegs years ago...they don't make them anymore. I'm actually considering removing it and going back to the flat decklid look with a integrated LED 3rd brake light flush mounted at the top edge of the decklid.

Your car is hot. Kinda seems silly to spend so much $$$ on 60's muscle when late model Malibus can look so good.

The paddle shifter is easy to adapt. You already have the right transmission 4L60E) and steering column. You'll need an aftermarket trans controller and an aftermarket steering wheel. Call, email or PM me if you have any questions

Thanks Steve....coming from someone like you thats a heckova compliment....and I love the 60's stuff too...just hard to find anything worth a crap around here...jeesh its hard enough to find affordable "late model" stuff thats not rotten when you're on a beer budget like me :)

I will definately get back to you about the "Shrifter" when the car is ready for it. Do you sell the complete package to slap right in and what do they go for? As far as the 60s toys. I've got mine and that was all I can afford. It looks like it will be G-Bodies from here on out for me. LOL
