View Full Version : Street Outlaws on Discovery

Anyone watch Street Outlaws on the Discovery channel? I do not in any way condone street racing and in point of fact the producers do not allow the guys to actually race on the open road. That said, damn those cars are impressive!

All of the big "street races" where they have tons of lights set up are done at an airport in North Oklahoma City, but the testing runs are really done on open roads. My only problem is that they say they have the fastest "street cars" in the country but they show up to the races on a trailer. I'd be more impressed if they drove them to the races haha

The only thing impressive is the cars, the "acting " is the absolute worst horse s**t ever. I realize that the "racing" is fake and not on real roads. There are others who do/would believe this to be opposite. This is why I don't watch it and think every bit of it is crap. It still promotes illegal street racing. Giving others in the hobby and industry a bad name and image. These are things the honest people have fought for, for how long? So the long arm of the law doesn't just assume that you are a bad guy.
As of right now in Ontario if you're caught driving more then 50km (31mph) over the speed limit your car is impounded and license suspended for 7 days. Then you get to go to court and argue why you shouldn't be charged with "stunt" driving and why they shouldnt give you a 10000$ fine......all this do to street racing. So at 2 am I can't "stretch" her legs a Lil when nobody is around. For the record the highest hwy speed we have in Ontario is 100km (62) mph. So the fastest you would ever want to drive is still no more then 150 km (93) mph
The show should be canceled let's be honest education level.....0 entertainment level....3 so what good does it provide
All I can say is I want a farm truck... :-D

I've never seen a street race where you had light plants and race trailers galore but is definitely still technically street racing. That said, I love the show. The cars are top notch drag cars and stupid fast. These guys aren't actors just normal people so what do you expect. Street racing is still dangerous and shouldn't be shown on TV but heck I'll watch it if they're going to show it.

Let me correct something that I said, the "acting" isn't the people its the crap scenarios that are created to add to the DRAMA....which is where I have issues. Let's be honest you want to show crazy fast cars then cool do it but, don't tell me that farmtruck had a garage sale and made no money cause the police gave him some tickets and then someone's girlfriend took some and.............. Just show the races and maybe I'll try to watch it for the third time . Please stop lying to me that what your showing is "real" or even reinacted

I LOVE drag racing and still go till this day to nhra and psca events. That said, to be there in person and see "behind the scenes" is the best part to me. I've watched it on TV and it's completely boring. Seeing them tear apart the cars and rebuild the motors and get a look at there at ups is pretty cool.
If the show just showed the racing without the behind the scenes building, tear downs, Fake fights, comical aspects then it wouldn't be entertainment, it would just be a 1320 YouTube video that's an hour long. Boring. Its like if people just posted up a before and after picture of there builds without all the details in between there wouldn't be a need for this site and it would just be boring. The information and steps people do to get to there finished builds is the best part. It's entertainment. It's better then watching honey boo boo, Kardashians or duck dynasty, which are all fake and staged as well. If you think realty shows are realty. ... well...

They get to say street car because in TX and OK you could register your kids radio flyer wagon if you wanted.
The guys on the show are actual street racers that know which side their bread is buttered on. They get paid to do the show, paid to put high priced parts on their cars, they sell mountains of tshirts, and the ones that own shops make a bunch of money from the advertising Discovery does for them.
They also aren't the fastest, just the best marketed.

I really disliked the show the first couple episodes but it grew on me. The cars are cool and the garage friendship/banter is fun to watch. The only part I dont enjoy is the fighting. The callout are kind of hokey as well. You already know each other and have been racing one another for years. Do you really have to create drama?

I haven't been "Hooked" on the show. I've tried watching, especially since 2 of the cars have a lot of BMR parts, but I just can't get into the show. I'm not sure why!

I think the show is complete garbage and is completely staged. YES its a road, YES they race on it. . . But clearly the road is blocked off lights are rolled in and there is nothing illegal about it. PLUS Promods are not street cars, these guys are not running pump gas.
On that note, I watch every episode because its better then the other crap on TV these days
I watch the show just beacuse i love drag racing . But thats got to be the longest 1/8 mile racing i have ever seen ,also wish they would show the tire burout before each race and dont think there the fastest in the nation.

I disagree. They are the fastest in the nation.. racing by their rules, on their strip of road... that we've seen so far. ;-)

I watched a series of episodes the other night. I see they raced Jeff Lutz and beat his 57 Chevy. That thing runs in the 6s in the 1/4.
I would like to see the street outlaws race participate in drag week and see how they hold up.

They won't do drag week because they aren't the fastest on a prepped track. That's not their gimmick.
They are the opposite. Drag week drives race cars to prepped tracks to race. Street outlaws trailer race cars to streets and race.

I think a couple of them tried to run drag week one year before the tv show and didn't make it past the first race.

Please don't take this post too seriously...I am just sharing what I know with a bit of opinion. The quote "fastest street cars in America" isn't what they are claiming. It is a play on words...Listen carefully and they say "the fastest street RACED cars in the country. Hot Rod Magazine did an interview with them that is actually a pretty good read and if I remember correctly they talk about drag week and their chances.
Also, I have a friend who went on set with them to Help "Chief" tune his car (my friend is pretty good with turbo cars). The Discovery channel actually obtains approval from the State of Oklahoma to use an access road off of the interstate from exit to entrance (not sure where) to set up the "stage/track/races). They close the exits for the shoots and typically shoot until just before dawn to minimize the impact on travelers.
If you are watching this "reality" show with some illusion that the show is real then the joke is on you. It is tv entertainment with dramatized story lines. The racing is real but not taken very seriously IMO.
As far as promoting street racing they put a disclaimer up at the beginning of the show and a couple times during (I believe). Besides, if you have a license then you are old enough to know better. If you don't have the sense to make a responsible decision about weather or not that is a good idea or not then your issues go WAY deeper than being influenced by a show lit that. As a human being we all have a compass in us that tells us what is wrong and right.
I personally love anything that promotes the hot rod industry and I like the show. They have some impressive cars and some pretty good drivers to put that kind of horsepower down on a street. Love it or hate it there is some COOL CARS ON TV!! Just enjoy it for what it is...A car guys "drag racing soap opera" :D

But yes.... take it for what it is....
I must say.... getting the amount of HP they have to hook on the street, is quite impressive....

I finally watched a 1/2 hour of this reality show with the story line reminding me of the movie "Dumb and Dumber"!
Having said that I do not care for reality TV in general. I've got my own life to live so why waste my time watching somebody else's screwed up life and the drama that goes with it whether real or acted. That has absolutely no interest what so ever to me.
I found none of the racer's/actor's (I guess that's what you call them) engaging in any way that made me want to watch them again. While drag racing is OK the drama, story line and the fact that nobody on the show is particularly interesting made for little to NO entertainment value from my perspective. Another one of those "Let's try this concept & throw it out and see if it sticks" type of reality shows.
The few "reality" TV shows "I" do enjoy tend to be more educational in some form or fashion where I have the opportunity to learn something & they have engaging/interesting host.
Street Outlaws misses the bulls eye BIG TIME in both of those areas!

I enjoy Street Outlaws. I used to flat out refuse to watch it, but then after you get past the fact that some of the drama between races and such is fake, but the actual races down the street are real, then it became decent for me. Sure it's not real "street racing", but the cars running is real, the potential for accidents is real, the close finishes are real, that's all stuff you can't fake. I like a lot of the vehicles like Big Chief, Murder Nova, and Farmtruck. No, it's not riveting educational TV, but it keeps me entertained for the better part of an hour, so I'd consider myself a fan.
As far as the whole NHRA thing, I think they've shot themselves in the foot big time. They've gotten a bad reputation for big money lately, and trying to shut Street Outlaws down is not helping them. Myself, I've wanted to race them, but after looking at the costs and the NHRA rulebook I changed my mind. I've raced PSCA and enjoyed that greatly. The irony is that NHRA was created to combat street racing, but none of these cars that are out street racing, would be allowed to run at an NHRA event (nor could they afford it).

I know our local NHRA track in Indy has a test and tune night aimed at getting cars off the street. But, your lucky to get 2-3 passes in and that's if your 1st in line when the gates open. It was better a few years ago when they had a street tire night on Tuesday night and Slick tire night on Thursdays. My buddies and I could get 10+ passes in on our bikes on the slick tire night.
I won't even go now with the combined nights. I would rather drive the 1.5 hours to another track or just run in one of the industrial complexes.
NHRA just wants your $.

I'm with you. I've been following him since the mid 90s. They used to publish some of his street stories in MM&FF and I always liked him. Couldn't wait to see La Fawnduh hurt some feelings but guess that will never happen.
I really like the show. I understand, nor do I care, that the show is staged on a closed road. I would be highly surprised and disappointed if wasn't. The show to me is enjoyable and a whole lot better to watch than Dancing with the Stars or The Bachelor.

I know when they came out to SoCal and filmed that one episode that they pretty much cherry picked who they raced -- They didn't even come close to calling out any of the big boys and hid when a couple of the Boys went looking for them....
I've been a fan of what Farm Truck has been doing for years, but all that goofy chit they end doing on the show for filler has pretty much pushed me away. I haven't watched a episode since season 1.
That said, I've got a brother-in-law that basically let a '70 4-speed T/A Challenger rot away in his garage from non-use, he lives and dies with that show...... Go figure

I think the show is great for a dying sport and hobbie. As far as it being real its not. Youre an idiot if you take it serious lol. Like a female watching the Kardashians. I do believe the races among the 10 list might be fake to make some drama sometimes. I believe the races outside the top 10 list or other states is real. And if they beat weak cars "lil boys" from other states then the lil boys should have not even shown up or been talking ****. The street outlaws always meet in person, or discuss over the telephone about the race for planning. The "Big Boys" should have shown up to play and called them out. I think people are haters.
Regardless they do have fast cars but they also have sponsers and $$$. I know it bothers some people. Who cares, everyone one of us would take advantage of a sponsor if we were able too. Most of us would be taking advantage and milking that cow if we had the chance. I see a lot of rich guys or people that work with sonsors that have hook ups on parts. Good for them. Why hate. But they are not Street Cars people. They are Street Racers! The show is awesome and good for cars and car guys.

As a friend of Jeff Lutz, the racing is real on closed streets. Test runs are real at their own risk. I help with Jeff's Pro Mod '69 Camaro, we did Drag Week last year with both '57s. They bout ran in the 6's, the Evil Twin ran 6.69 @ 225 and the we had to drive 300 miles each day to the next track. We didn't get to our hotel room till after 3 am most nights and back to the track by 8:30. Blew a couple head gaskets, broken rocker arms, flat tire. Wore out a set of slicks in 4 days, we didn't change to street tires. Yes Tina was there all week, and most of the others from the show were there on and off most of the week. Completely different setups for street and strip. I enjoy the show understanding what it is. It gets people off their butts and turning wrenches on their own cars. They are getting ready to start filming for season 5, wish them all the best of luck.

I think RU Faster was an interesting concept to see what the PT cars could do compared to modern sports cars. But I also think RU Faster was way too much Redneck and way too little Faster. I would have liked to see a lot more on track footage which I'm sure they shot.
