Haven't posted any updates lately, but all of the sheet metal is finished with some body work left. Body work is done on front frame rails and IFS coyote crossmember (first coat of primer). Hydroboost and pedals mocked up! Taking a break for a few weeks, will post more when I get back to business.

My wife surprised me with this nice package sitting in the living room one day last week (ridetech 4-link, coyote control pack, pulleys, AAW wiring kit, Aeromotive stealth tank, etc..). I thought it was a "thank you" for sacrificing many parts for cash towards our summer vacation. She said its any early Anniversary gift!! What a wife....:jump:

Have you measured out hood clearance yet?

migg400
10-19-2014, 08:00 AM
Actually I haven't yet. My buddy found a set of mounts made by Prothane that sets the engine a tad lower and he used them for his build in his 98 so I was thinking of using a set. I've seen a few builds that also use OEM 4.6 mounts with minimum clearance issues, I also plan to use a Shelby style hood with a scoop. Probably wont be to that point for a few more months though!

Cool project. Are you installing minitubs? if so, did you narrow the frame rails and modify the Ridetech bracket? Does not look like the Ridetech bracket had been modified though.

I'm working on a 65 Fastback with DSE minitubs, and Ridetech rear.

Rickpaw- I did minitub it. I actually tackled that a few years before the kits were available and I was at the point of installing new quarters. I didn't modify the frame rails but I was able to add just about 2" in the center of the OE style wheel houses and moving them right up against the rails. I also cut down the rear seat to keep the factory look!

That engine is so massive...LOL

Do yourself a favor. Call Tanks, Inc. and order the cork gaskets for the filler, pump, and sender. Then use Permatex 80019 Aviation sealer. The rubber gaskets will swell like crazy.

Is it a truck engine or mustang engine? Are you using that one for clearance issues? Different crossmember but mine did not have a fit issue with the stock oil filter location. Love your car! And I can safely say, that even when only stock and no super charger, it will fly!

migg400
09-01-2015, 06:25 PM
Andrewb70 - Thanks for the tips. I actually have the Aeromotive 340 Stealth Tank which I'm hoping will survive for a while but I will keep your recommendations in mind.

Peter - It's a truck engine out of a 2012 F150. Not using it due to clearance issues. I know the truck that it came out of which only had just under 5k miles on it and I got it for a good deal plus the factory oil cooler. The compression is 10.5:1 vs 11:1 of the Mustang.

Thanks for the feedback guys!!

The pump has nothing to do with it. It is the rubber gaskets that seal the pump insert to the tank. The same gaskets are used for the sender and the filler. You can probably use the rubber gaskets, just smear the aviation sealer all over them.

I have the PS pump permanently mounted and all of the lines made and ran to the Hydroboost unit. The Radiator, and Heat exchanger are mocked up as well as all the coolant hose routing. Currently making the brackets for the coolant tanks and I need to make a few more brackets for the Heat exchanger. Hopefully I can get back to the few spots underneath that I need to weld up so that I can finish the coating and seam sealing.

123765123764Just a quick update:

Haven't been making much progress on her lately, but starting to pick back up. I was able to get the computer mounted, make the Heat Exchanger brackets, installed oil catch can, installed new rear end pinion yoke, finished mocking the Trans cross member, and my custom Aluminum driveshaft (1350's at both ends!) came in yesterday. I am also working on fabricating a heat shield/cover for the computer wire harness. Lastly, I mocked up a 18x11 rear wheel with a 295 tire to check for clearance and it looks like I have plenty of room for 315's.

Headers, Subframe connectors, Steering Column, and seat brackets are up next!!

Subscribed... quick question, is there a size difference in the Coyote motor vs the GT 500 5.8? Watching you both (you and dalpilot) I'm gonna go one or the other.. cost wise the Coyote is cheaper. Also what tranny is that? Is it from a 2003/4 cobra? I noticed it doesn't have the remote linkage like the new 5.0 trannys

Gnitro - The Coyote and the GT500 are different with respect to cubic inches and built on different platform. The Coyote is a 302cu 5.0l, and the GT500 engine is a 351 cu 5.8l. The trans that I'm running is a Tremec T45 built by Hanlon Performance. The TR3650's and T45's bolt directly to the coyote. Not sure if the T56 out of the 03/04 Cobra's directly bolt to the Coyote without an adapter plate or aftermarket bell housing.

They are Doug's Coyote swap headers. They were designed based on the TCI front IFS. I have the Rod & Customs front IFS, and thesea were definitely a challenge to make the fitment perfect. I had to modify the driver side header and shave the clutch fork.

Will the air filter impede performance?

No, It should be fine according to K&N. They did state that I may have to clean it more often (depending on drive time) versus the larger one that comes with the JLT kit. Below is a pic of the mock up plumbing that I did using a stock GT500 intake and a JLT pipe for 99-04 Mustangs. It would've worked that way, but I was afraid of all the hot air that's being pulled out of the radiator by the fan getting sucked right into the intake.

Do you have the entire blower kit which includes the blower itself (head unit) and the Lower intake manifold? If you only have the head unit, you can contact Roush Performance parts dept or VMP performance and they will sell you the Lower intake manifold for the blower (head unit). FYI- The TVS and Whipple (my blower) uses the same Lower manifold. As far as the Control Pack, you can use it. No need for a separate control pack, just additional wiring for the TB, and Lower manifold temp sensor (you will need to split the wiring signal from the inlet temp sensor back to the ecu. VMP sells the additional wiring.

Personally, if the disk material is organic, there is no need for break in. If you want to err on the safe side, my take is that it is abut heat cycles, so any mileage recommendation is based on city driving, where you would naturally use the clutch more.

You don't see new cars with a clutch break in warning, do you? Just my thoughts...

Andrew

Makes sense! Thanks.....

Did you ever decide on a hood solution with the blower & mass air intake? We are building a similar setup in a 67 fastback and are considering the NPD 68 Shelby style hood (regular or tall). They make a slightly taller version with approx. 3.5-4" inch of increased clearance.
Have you taken any confirming measurements on the clearance needed for your setup? The photos you posted appear to be about 3-4 inches. Keep up the great work.

I am leaning towards the Shelby Hood, but have not taken any measurements yet. I should be putting the sheet metal back on very soon, and will definitely have my mind made up by then (Hopefully!).

Thanks for the encouragement!

I've been getting quite a few things done lately, and now she's finally running!! I finished the floor out with a product called KilMat (80mil thickness) which is much like Dynamat and Xmat.

I was able to fab up my own 3" exhaust with turndowns. I wanted an H-Pipe as I love the sound that they produce. I've always ran an H-pipe on my previous Mustangs and figured if it sounds good and performs good on a pushrod, then it's got to sound good on a Coyote!

It looks like you were able to mount the engine with the stock F150 oil cooler/filter mount still in place. Also, the photos indicate that you were also able to use the stock oil pan from the F150.

Did you use a higher motor mount to make this work with the IFS & rack? Are you using the poly/prothane lower profile adjustable motor mounts that may allow you to drop the engine about an 1"?

If you are using standard motor mounts, do you have room to drop the engine with the stock F150 oil cooler and oil pan without conflicts?

This is a conflict area for most guys doing the F150-classic mustang swaps. As you know, the F150 truck coyotes have the enormous oil cooler and alternator mounting location is slightly wider.
Please elaborate with any mods or photos regarding this issue.

Also, did you have to swap out the front timing cover from your 2013 F150 Coyote engine to the newer, GenII front cover to accommodate the supercharger setup? If not, did you have to modify, drill, tap, customize the stock front cover?

Thanks again for sharing.
Looking forward to your quality build updates.

Did you use a higher motor mount to make this work with the IFS & rack? - No, the Rod & Custom IFS is a well designed and the crossmember is specific to Coyote swaps. Are you using the poly/prothane lower profile adjustable motor mounts that may allow you to drop the engine about an 1"? - I am using a set of Prothane mounts for 94-04 4.6 Mustangs. They are non-adjustable, but not sure is they are lower than the OEM rubber mounts.

If you are using standard motor mounts, do you have room to drop the engine with the stock F150 oil cooler and oil pan without conflicts? - There is a tad bit of room to go lower and clear the pan, but the will run into issues with the oil cooler rest/hitting the sway bar.

This is a conflict area for most guys doing the F150-classic mustang swaps. As you know, the F150 truck coyotes have the enormous oil cooler and alternator mounting location is slightly wider. - No issues with the Alt and the distance to frame rail ( I have just over an inch between Alt and frame rail).

I retained the 2013 F150 Timing cover, and only modified it per the Whipple instructions. Had to cut a few tabs off the cover to accommodate the blower Idler/Tensioner pulley bracket.

Hope this helps....

Started working on my console a few weeks ago, and I think I made good progress? I started with a console out of a 2016 Mustang. Ended up cutting it down four inches from the bottom, then heating/shrinking it about another seven inches to get it to work for me. I also wanted to mimic the factory part of the dash to mate to the radio bezel to look somewhat appropriate.

Since I'm gonna be working on the interior for a while and wrapping up some wiring, I figured I'd add a Push Button Start which I think adds a nice personal touch! The functionality is Awesome too!!

Great build. I have been on & off mine for the last three years and about to do a 90% mock build before final body finish and paint. I read that you narrowed your rear seat to keep a reasonably standard look. Do you have any pictures as it is one part that is slightly puzzling me. Don't want to got the full custom interior route.
Can't wait to see more progress. Inspiring.

Subscribed. I'm doing a similar build, with a 1970 Mach 1. I have the same front end setup, sub-frame connectors and an F-150 Coyote too. The only difference is, I'm building it with twin turbos and a 6R80 transmission. I'm interested in your choice of radiator. Is that just an aftermarket S197 Coyote radiator?

ngiotta - Yes, it's an Aftermarket Aluminum OEM replacement for 05-14 Mustangs. It's made by Mishimoto, and it keeps it pretty cool.
