Illuminating the gauge "labels" on Dakota Gauges

After bench testing the Dakota digital gauges in my 69 Camaro, I noticed that I can't see the gauge labels in the dark. By labels I mean "RPM", "MPH", "WATER", etc. I was thinking of using the factory gauge lamps and adjusting the brightness but I'm not sure if it would drown out the displays. I also thought about using a narrow angle, (spot) LED to illuminate each label individually.

could do like modern gms and doo the mood lights thats how everything is lit in the cabins of them. its just two leds that spread a very dim light through the cabin.
