My Camaro will be home in a few weeks and I need ti figure out what I'm going to power it with. I want to learn to build an engine for the car and want to go LS EFI based. I have a few other projects to work on in the future so this will be a valuable learning experience for my future projects.

So the question is, what is valuable learning tool to build an LS engine. From bare block to running, especially for boosted applications with a turbo.

For this project with my Camaro, I'd want to build an engine that'll make somewhere in the 500 hp range and would like to go with a manual transmission but not opposed to automatic since I haven't cut a hole in the transmission tunnel yet. The car will be street driven with a once a long time track event when an event comes to Charlotte. The only thing I have done is add a Ridetech 4 link cradle to the car and installed subframe connectors. Other than that, I have a clean slate and an open mind to put a combo together from the junkyard to a parts catalog.

I'm actually interested in getting some of this information as well! So if anyone has any info, that would be great! I'm just interested in going naturally aspirated and 400 hp range. More interested in staying in a lower budget and shooting for more reliability/drivability.

Spend time in ls1tech and here and lateral-g. Swaps are far easier these days. People used to have to piece together engine mounts, oil pans, accessory drives, headers etc from one car to the next. There is a lot more aftermarket support these days for a straight lsx swap into a first gen. A turbo setup will be more difficult. I don't know of any turnkey setups for that, but there are built examples out there to learn from.

I'm pretty sure there's a book about LS engine building.. Saw it at Barnes and Noble a few months ago.

I bought the book written by Joseph Potak from TSP. It was my bible through my engine build so I recommend it with confidence.

Chris Werner's book is an excellent guide for a step by step guide for a full rebuild. While there are forced induction books specific to the LS platform, there are many ways to set up a turbo. Start by browsing and searching LS1tech. You will quickly find that if 500hp is your goal, a turbo may not be worth the effort and cost associated with it.
