I was just wondering if anyone on here has any experience using Lava Mat in any of their builds instead of the standard gold foil thermal insulators.

Aside from the insulating properties I think it would compliment my engine bay nicely.

So has anyone had any experience?

Haven't used it but have heard good things about it. May use it for my own trans tunnel.

I used it on a twin turbo small block 57 Chevy I worked on. Was nice stuff to work with. Haven't heard of any issues.

I have no experience with the lava product. However I believe a true gold reflective barrier is the most efficient "reflective" barrier. Insulation is another and different property, which gold is not efficient at. The outer lava dark color also seems to be a poor choice for the task at hand. My gut feeling is the "lava" term is more marketing hype, and like a number of other compounds, able to withstand high temps, but depending on the application, insulation/thermal conductivity is of greater concerned, combined with the reflective barrier chosen. I consider "gold" the highest standard. Of course there is a difference between gold and gold colored.
