I have a pair on the GM progressive bump stops on the front of my 79 Malibu. Now that the springs have settled, the bump stops are just touching the frame. I thought I read somewhere that you should not trim those type of stops, correct? How much room is needed between the bump stop and the frame? I there a different one that is recommended for lowered cars?

Thanks Jason

On stock control arms? I know a couple aftermarket arms use them, but the mount is likely relocated. Perhaps they're just too tall for your application?

When I had them they sat about an inch from the frame. I lowered the truck more at some point and they were basically touching at ride height so I took them off and cut them down about 1/2". I just tried to keep the same basic cone shape when I trimmed them to keep them progressive - it seemed to work ok but it was hard to tell.

Are these the one's you're referring to?

Yes claytonidbob, they are stock arms. Maybe they are just to tall for my current set up.

Rentedmule, yes they are the same as yours pictured, just orange in color. Is 1/2" a a rule of thumb on clearance? Did trimming them make them feel harsher?

Thanks for the replys.

I'm not sure what the rule of thumb is, I just trimmed them until I felt like they weren't limiting my suspension travel during normal driving on decent roads. I think it felt better with them trimmed, maybe the springs/shocks were then taking care of controlling the suspension rather than the bump stops. Sorry I'm not much help, I sort of just tinkered until it felt right. They're not that pricey and they're quick to install so if you cut them too much you can always try again without taking too much of a hit.

The best solution would be to relocate them lower on the arm or to a spot where there is more distance to the frame, but that would likely require welding.
