View Full Version : Hooker Headers 2473-HKR Install

I just received a new set of Hooker LS Swap headers (2473-1HKR) so I thought I would post a few pics of how they fit. Hooker markets these headers to be used with their engine mounts, transmission mount, and oil pan. I am using my existing DSE engine mounts, along with a home made transmission crossmember and the older style Holley oil pan, so they ARE compatible with other manufacturers mounts.

The fit of these headers is excellent. The clearance around the factory steering box is great, I can put my hand between the box and the header tubes. The headers also easily clear the Ridetech Tru Turn system since they are swept back more than typical full length headers. After talking with Todd O'Neil from Holley, I determined that the new Hooker engine mounts position the engine in just about the same location as the DSE "stock location" mounts. As a point of reference, the machined surface on the front of the block is flush with the front surface of the factory crossmember.

Engine: 6.0 LY6 LS
Engine Mounts: DSE 060401 "stock location" engine mounts\
Transmission Crossmember: Home Made
Oil Pan: Holley 302-1 Older Style Pan (This required a slight notch in the factory subframe)
Suspension: Ridetech Full Suspension with Tru Turn
Steering Box: 3rd Gen Camaro Factory IROC Box

The notch in the drivers side engine mount was from the previous set of Dynatech headers and is not required for the new Hooker Headers.

Old but I have to ask.....did you have to cut the crossmember down to clear the 301 pan? You used DSE stock position mounts.....what engine stands are those? How were driveline angles?

I did have to notch the stock crossmember approx 1/2" deep for clearance on the Holley 302-1 pan. The DSE mounts are part number 060401 and are their "stock location" mounts. My angles at the driveshaft are 3.5 degrees. The car has the full Ridetech suspension front rear and sits pretty low.

I have the LS 302-1 Pan, going to return it to Summit, I also have the Dirty Dingo Mounts, I wanted to slide the engine back, using the vintage A/C unit. How well do the headers fit??

so these are the Mids.....wondering if the long tubes would have fit. Debating exhause myself currently and it turns out my front machined face of block is also flush with the crossmember.

I recommend the Hooker / Holley as well. Went with all of their equipment on my 69 build and have to say the fitment and ground clearance is great. I went with 1-3/4" long tubes for my LS3 / 4L65E combo along with the 302-2 oil pan.

Hello hotrodneb,I can tell you if you are using swap plates with the factory frame stands the Hooker long-tube headers won't be compatible for your set-up. They were designed around the unique engine height and fore/aft placement that comes from using the Hooker engine brackets and transmission crossmembers for this application. The frame stand/swap plate method of engine mounting raises the engine up from this position considerable and will cause interference between the floor and the header collectors. To give you an indication as to the difference in height between the two mounting methods, the Holley 302-1 oil pan used by regal454 above can be installed on your car using swap plates on the frame stands but cannot be using the Hooker engine brackets without cutting a 3/4" notch out of the engine crossmember to provide the needed clearance; the Holley 302-2 pan was designed to specifically address this application. Also the machined face of the engine block resides 1/2" behind the front face of the crossmember with the Hooker mounting components, so there is another deviation from your engine position that is likely to cause interference between the headers and components on your car. I have tons of photos that depict the fitment/installation of the Hooker components on a 1st-gen F-body, so if you want to see them to have a greater understanding of what I'm talking about, send me a PM and I'll gladly forward them to you.

Yes...finally. two kids later and my car is finally back together. Hit the Charlotte Goodguys show this weekend and had a blast.

Do you have a side shot of the car, showing the ground clearance? Did you use 45* bend exhaust tubing to tie into the exhaust? Where did you locate the O2 sensor bungs?

Sorry for all the questions. I have the same Dynatech headers, and been thinking about swapping to the same Hooker midlength to gain some ground clearance.

Hey rickpaw, the Hooker adapter tubes that are designed to connect these headers to the Hooker system have the bends and O2 bungs in them.

Do you have the part number by chance? All I could find on Holley's website is the adapter tube for 3" pipe.

The 2473HKR headers have 2.5" collectors and use the 42108HKR adapter tubes to connect them to the 2.5" Hooker exhaust system. The 2474HKR version of the same headers (1-7/8" primaries) have 3" collectors and use the 42109HKR adapters to connect them to the 3" Hooker exhaust system.
