View Full Version : 67' Camaro with 5th gen center console

Posted this on TeamCamaro forum, thought I would throw it up over here as well.

First off, I stole the idea from another member on here. So its definately not original. This was all done at home in the garage by me. I plan to use an e-brake handle that I aquired from a 2010 as well and remove the old pedal style ebrake.

I covered the console in vinyl to try and match the interior as much as possible. I didn't want a huge black plastic piece as a center console. I also tried to match the shape of the original gauge cluster out of a 67'. The only part I didnt do was spraying the paint. I left that up to the professional that originally painted the car. I had thoughts of going matte black instead of the car color but it just didnt look right to me. I used the traction contol button to run a b&m line lock, both aux sockets work along with the usb and aux input to the radio in the console box/storage. The shifter is the same b&m that I have in this picture, just a different knob and I used the shifter boot from the 5th gen.

Sorry about the quality of some of pictures, I tried to get the best ones. Had to adjust a few as well so you can see all of it. Let me know what y'all think.

Very nice, I have seen Jeff's (JWcarguy) console conversion and I have been trying to find one. Not many around on ebay, most of them are missing parts.

Thanks you. They do seem hard to find. I got this one off of ebay but the junkyard didnt even have a picture of it up. I had to inquire as to what all it included. I made sure it was everything that I need and bought it. It seems like the side pieces are the hardest to find.

Nice Work! I was also inspired by jwcarguy and acquired one a few months back. I'm also looking into making the 5th gen e-brake handle work if possible... keep us posted on that please.

Scott,

I have the E-brake handle assembly from mine if you need it?

It mounts off center and the first gen tunnel is much narrower, so I was going to make a "platform" that fits the side of the first gen tunnel and creates a "flat" area for the gen 5 E-brake handle assembly to mount to

then use either a Wilwood or Lokar dual e-brake cable setup that steps down to one point and mount/ connect to top of tunnel and route the cables to each side , and connect the e-brake switch to the gen 5 setup

For my, the handle was too "big and bulky" for my taste
so I made a template of the handle "hole" in the console, went to a buddy's shop and had him make a plate from 1/8" steel plate on the plasma table, filed don/ rounded the edges, welded two 8/32 studs to back and then had my upholstery guy wrap them in leather and make a "pouche" for my iphone
Only thing that I came up with, rather than just covering the whole, this way, it looks intentional and that I at least addressed the issue, rather than just covering it?
here is a pic

Sorry I have been on in a while, went on vacation.
jwcarguy; yes it was yours I was refering to. It looked like it flowed well in the car and made sense to go with a newer model like that, sort of keeping it in the family.
As far as the ebrake goes, I've put in there a couple times now and just looking at it, it seems way to big. If you google a 2010 camaro console in the car it looks like it sticks up too high and is a bit long. I think I am going to stick with the pedal for now, I think I am actually going to pull my console back out and fill in the ebrake hole and completely recover that side so its smooth. Might take a little more work but I think it would be worth it.
I ended up making some brackets to mount mine. I rested it on some peices of cardboard to figure out where I wanted it and then made some brackets that bolt to the floor and then the console screws onto the brackets. One bracket for the front where that cross piece sits under the shifter surround and one in the rear that bolts to the two bottom holes. I also made a center bracket which is just a piece of flat 1/4" aluminum that screws onto the console and then attaches to the megashifter where the old surround bolted. I got lucky with the center piece, it was all in the placement.

Awesome! Thanks for the ideas. I have time to figure something out. I did buy a brake handle separately but appreciate the offer. We need to meet up sometime, I'm in Vegas... saw your car at Super Run, and decided then on the late model console.

Mine is a combination of the factory Gen 5 Camaro "non-gauge" shifter bezel w/ tray and a Auto Meter 68-9 Camaro 2 1/16" gauge insert panel for a stock 68-9 console
a bunch of cutting, fitting and fiberglassing in
I removed the stock Gen 5 cig plug and traction control switch and filled them in and installed my two switches for the drivers and passenger seat heaters that I had installed when I had my upholstery redone

Then had a local company (Sin City Hydrograhics) do all my parts in a black "carbon fiber" hydro dip

Hope that helps Jeff

Okay, so I love this idea do much that I ran out and got a Gen5 console. Now I'm wondering how you guys made it look so good. Do you have more pics or a build thread?

The basic dimensions fit okay but the front of the console is much wider than the tunnel. Lifting the front up to tuck into the dash leaves a big gap under the console, between the console and tunnel. Did you guys modify your tunnel to fit or something?

It's looking like more than just fabbing brackets and basic trimming. There's not even really anything strong enough on the console to structurally attach brackets to. Looks like there's much more to this swap than it originally appears.

I got mine on ebay, they are hard to find complete. I looked for about 2 months before I found one, a lot of them are missing the side panels or other parts. I got lucky and ended up getting an complete auto console with gauges for $240 and sold the gauges for $200. It seemed like they vary in price from $150-300. Good luck with your search.

I purchased a manual insert for $40 and $50 for the shifter boot. I just had it recovered locally to match the original medium blue madrid vinyl and had a matching shifter boot (post above) for about $300, it would have been easier if my interior was black LOL Another cool feature is besides the 2 12v cig lighters, there is also a USB port that can be hooked up to your radio (if it has those capabilities).

A couple of installation notes- I ended up trimming the pass side panel (was originally the same length of the drivers side) because of my vintage air. I will end up make some brackets to attach it. Here is a picture of it completed.

I have this new 2 gauge insert available if anyone is interested
this is a brand new console gauge pod for a stock non gauge/ tray console car in silver finish
fits 2010-2014 Camaro

It fits two 2 1/16" aftermarket gauges (ie Auto Meter, etc) that are angled for better viewing, much better than the other brand offered that positions the gauges straight

easily attaches with 3M double sided tape (included)
has one slight smudge in back of one pod , hard to see, even when installed

Asking $60 shipped

also plan well with its relationship with other parts (ie shifter, ac vents, seats, etc. etc.)

Jeff, did you make the shifter handle? It really looks good. I had drawn up some ideas of slapper bar traction bars made out of solid 1.5" x 2.5" solid aluminum, that I think would look pretty cool, just haven't researched it enough to make them. I'm wondering if the aluminum would hold up to bending.

Everything works, lights for the shift positions, handbrake, cigarette lighters all work. Pertty cool :-)

medbali76 I need the details on your install! Did you make a hole the size of the shifter gasket? I have the same set up to go in my 69 Camaro with a 4l85. I already bought the Hurst set up. It looks great in there.

It was installed by the shop who made the engine swap.
There are pics but those do not show everything.
Right now I am working abroad. As soon as I get home and pick up the car I will get the details.

Thank you.
Actually there are plenty of small things that still needs to be done to look perfect. The interior panels and seats were grabbed from different cars so there are a lot of colors now inside.
It looks better on pics.

Medbali76 Thank you ! I was wondering if the hole in the floor needs to be as big as the 5th gen uses, I think its to accommodate the T56 and the auto in the same package. What are the seats out of ?

I am pretty sure that they did not cut that big. And they actually made a modification for the shifting mechanism. They connected the transmission and the shifter with cable.
They had to do this to be able to move the consol to the best position. They also prepared strong brackets that holding the shifter and the whole center consol.
This is a 6l90e tranny so they had to enlarge the transmission tunel too. I will send pics to your email address.
The seats are from a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo lX.

great pics and install guys.

I have a 5th gen console I have for my 72' Camaro with a T-56 and trying to get ideas on how to mount it.

where on the center console did you mount it?

is their bracket spots on the console that you used or made your own mounting points on the console?

Well, now back to the drawing board... Just converted my Camaro to a T-56 6 speed. Now the 5th gen console is back on the table of "I wants".

Nova dash and consol looks killer!
definitely a to do on next build. Currently have this set up, like the slap shifter with brass knuckles set up but had to mod the tunnel to accept ratchet assembly mechanism. The wifey bought me the center consol a few Christmass ago finally got around to installing.

What seats are you guys using. I have the Procar Elite seats in mine and they are a little too wide. They push in on the sides of the panels.

Jeff, Does this look like the one https://www.jegs.com/i/Wilwood/950/330-9371/10002/-1 or is there one with shorter cables?

That one would likely work, I used the Lokar version (https://www.jegs.com/i/Lokar/625/EC-80FU/10002/-1)

Well, it fits the 72 Nova perfectly. No trimming at all. The 4 pod gauge was removed and used the basic cover with the tray.
Everything works, lights for the shift positions, handbrake, cigarette lighters all work. Pertty cool :-)

Picked up a nice 5th gen console for our build, curious what seats people are using for this in a first Gen to avoid rubbing, looks like factory seats are too wide.

send me a text, I can reply with a few pics and dimensionsSent a message for some pictures and dimensions too.

Probably not for everyone but I used a 2" stroke linear actuator for parking brake, works good

Find the brake lever in a car that's being parted out and get it and cut out the floorboard section it bolts too and it will be easier to mount it. Also make sure you get the full cable and tube with the ball end and the part that hooks it to the 2 brake cables going back. Then use the willwood cable set or the one from Lokar mentioned above.
