Steering Question

so i currently have 12:1 gear box in my 66 El Camino, when i am autocrossing it on the turn arounds my arms are all crossed up:drive1: so i made a call to Lee and they can change the 12:1 to a 9:1 but...they said it will be twitchy


anybody out there running with a 9:1?

Shuffle steer......seriously.

Bryce is running 8:1 I believe with a circle track quickener. Shorter steering arms are another option.

I bet 99% of the cars at the track, not at home on jack stands, are 12:1, also depends on steering wheel size, I use a 15 wheel its larger than most but the steering input smoother has a larger area to shuffle and I steer using body and shoulders instead of the forearms and for me that reduces fatigue

I think i will stay with the 12:1 but Lee said they will match my pump to the 12:1 and it will be better

Strano is the only guy I have seen effectively rarely let go of the wheel. Watch his youtube videos.....I think his arms are made of rubber.

Right or wrong, I have stopped holding the wheel so tight. I sort of "cup it" and guide the wheel instead of trying to force my will on it. I try to drive just below 9 and 3 and for a tight turn that will require more input than usual I will slide a hand up to the top and then guide the wheel as it unwinds.

I don't think 8:1 would be "twitchy" like Bryce says it really depends on the alignment settings and steering wheel size is used I would use a 14 or 15 inch wheel that smooths out the inputs, I personally look for a ratio to response of 1-1, on steering, throttle, brakes and clutch for my car
