View Full Version : Nine inch diff. For road course?
What kind off unit are you running in your ford 9inch , and how much rwhp? Im ready to swap out my spool for a unit but need something that will hold hard launches (drag slicks) for 1/4 mile drag racing . So pretty much my question what unit to run for both road race and drag race?
Thanks.

Strange s trac and their new hd aluminum case. I don't have a 9in rear or anything, but it's what I would get if had the money.

There are lots of threads on this exact subject. For some context, nuance, and various arguments do a search. My recommendation: Detroit Locker 33 or 35 spline.
Strange s trac looks good , i had a detroit locker before but hated the way it locked every time i would stop and go.

520 rwhp I'm using a C&R Racing built Strange/Ford racing case, Tru-trac, internal cooling pump, and rem finished gears. I was told to not use an aluminum case for a road course car due to the heat build up on a road course. The Strange case is cast steel and considerably lighter than the nodular iron ones.

The density of iron and steel is identical. So unless Strange heavily machined the steel carrier, I can't imagine that it would be "considerably" lighter than iron. Even if it was heavily machined, I can't imagine that the difference in weight is more than a couple of pounds. Just saying…

I have just under 550 hp using 35 spline axles and a Detroit locker.

It's thinner than the iron case. I've never weighed the two to compare but you can definitely tell the difference when you lift them, maybe I'll weigh them since you seem to be doubting the fact it's lighter.

Do you have the Ford SVT investment cast steel case? Them things are super nice... I'd say they are at least 8-10 pounds lighter than a nodular

Yes, it has the Ford racing logo on it. I was told by C&R that it's the same 3rd member that Nascar uses without the $3000 X-trac gears, I didn't see the need for those.

Yes that's what the cup cars are allowed to run they are illegal in nationwide and trucks... They are nice pieces without a doubt.. The guys at C&R are great to work with... Known them
For a few years...

I had to check this out, so I took a walk out to the shop. The Ford Motorsport case we machine for them is 20.1 Lbs. and our Nodular case is 30.5 Lbs. That is as much as they will let me share.

Thanks for the info Wil, you saved me the trouble of weighing it to share with Andrew.

Something you might want to consider is an OLD Ford 8 Inch Rear-end.
I know a lot of guys running the 8 inch rear in Shelby and Ford Mustang Full ROAD Race prepared cars running 450HP-500HP race engines with Toploader transmissions and 5 Speeds with no problems at all. Yes they are running a good center section and good axles. Certainly not the setup for drag racing however the loads on the rear-end is different road racing.
The 8 inch rear-end is MUCH lighter and has proven hard to tear up road racing. Also somewhat cheaper to build and certainly much to cheaper to buy on the front-end.
Something to consider?
Bigger, Badder, Heavier and more expensive is NOT always better or needed!
Lot if good info thanks guys . Setup I'm going with will be in the four digit rwhp . I will try the s trac that comes with lifetime warranty .

I had always been planning to run a bolt thru aluminum 3rd, 450hp and AWD so not all the power to the rear. Is there a super strong case against it that would sway me to nodular or something?
