So I'm looking to buy what the guy claims to be a 5.3 from a 2002 tahoo the car was wrecked the the motor is out now I know the 4.8 was also used in some cars and the blocks are the same so how can I make sure it's a true 5.3? Also and tips from veteran used motor buyers to make sure the motor isn't trash I'm driving an hour to look at it so I don't want to go buy trash thanks!

My 6.2l has it stamped on the back of the block. I may be wrong, but did tahoes even come with the 4.8l?

On the back of the block 4.8/5.3 or stamped so the stamping is the same for both :/ and yes I believe so

take off a head and see the tops of the pistons..
if I remember correctly the 5.3 has dished piston tops and the 4.8s have flat tops..

This is the only way to tell the difference in the 2. Otherwise you have to pull the oil pan off and find the crank shaft casting number.
Pull a plug and shine a light thru the hole to see the piston , look for a dish piston. For a 5.3
