Are there any retractable 4 point harnesses out on the market?

I like my 4 point harness now but it is really annoying having to deal with the lap belts every time I get in and out of the car. Is there a harness I can get that has a retractable lap belt?

None that I'm aware of. A 3 point harness is safer anyway, and you can get those in a retractable version.

How is a 3 point safer? I have never heard that before.

4 point harnesses will eventually not be allowed. Because they keep the upper torso farther back in a frontal collision, they tend to allow the body to slide down under the lap belt, which results in the lap belt causing severe abdominal injuries. 6 point harnesses with thigh-belts (sometimes called anti-submarine belts) that hold the lap belt in position are much better.

A 3 point harness causes the body to twist during a frontal collision (plus all modern cars have belt retractors to tighten the belts significantly during impact) and so doesn't have the "submarining" problem. In nearly all cases a 3 point system is superior in a frontal collision to a 4 point system.

If you go with a 6 point system, then you also need to use a HANS device, because they hold the upper torso so securely that your neck can't hold your head in place anymore.

      Great post John.
Most people don't realise that 4 point harnesses are not safe.
I'm looking for a good seat right now to use with a 6 point harness.

      Here ya go:

It's a Cobra Misano. It has provisions for both 6 point and 3 point harnesses. It has welded bars under the seat for the thigh belts, and it be mounted on sliders or a power seat rail and integrated with a 3 point belt. I just put one in my 07 Z06, and I have two on hand for my 69 Camaro project.
