OK so I have been dying to do this for a while now and today I finally got up the nerve to play around with some cardboard and shape something in place. PLEASE NOTE that I am NOT a professional (ah.. duh!!) and I still have to continue it back for an armrest and storage bin but let me know what you think of the general shape of this? The more criticism I get the more I will learn so dont be afraid to let it rip!..Once I am finished playing with the templates I will have to put it to other material so I will need some suggestions on that... Oh and yes that is CARDBOARD pizza boxes and black Duct tape!! ha ha ha...

Looks like a good start you gonna use wood, metal, fiberglass?

dont know. Thinking of using wood or PVC since I will be covering the entire piece in leather. I guess wood would be the easiest way to go?? What do you think?

Looks good, you could do it in any material you want, really depends on what you are comfortable working with. I like the design.

Good start, a little too boxy for my liking. If you could round the edges it wouldn't have that 80's console look.

Yea I hear ya on that. I am still playing around getting the angles right also want to miter the edges to get it rounded out a bit but obviously like the input so please keep it coming. This literally was put together in 10 minutes just to get an idea of some sort of flow and basic placement. I know I could just buy something out there for 3-400 and then cover it but want it to be different than the mainstream. The good thing is I own an actual leather tannery so I have access to all the leather I every could want... Now if I just knew how to sew and double needle I would be pumped!!!

I'm using a console out of a 2002 Camaro in my '67. It is too short and leaves a 6"+ gap between the dash and the end of the console, so I'm going to close the gap using fiberglass. I'll make the ribs of the structure out of MDF, then staple fleece over that, and lay fiberglass over the top so I can get the boxiness of the dash to transition to the rounded edges of the console, and cover it with black leather to match the console.

I went with wood. Now I'm planning on spending the $$$ for a fiberglass one.
And I'm not building a show car! Sheesh :)

Any reason you switched over to fiberglass? Did you have problems with the wood one or did you just want something different?

weight?

Sorry for the late response. No problems with the wood one. Weight not really an issue. I built it without really knowing the direction the car was going. Silly me! What's that thing called... a plan!? Anyway, it was an easy project. Got the hinges at home depot. I guess I could do it again and make it exactly how I want it now. The gauge pod in the front is gone so now I have a hole there! I'd probably shoot up more in the front to hit the dash. Great, now you got me thinking again! :)

Slowly but surely. I still need to trim and fix and reshape things like the console box etc.. but here is a rough wood frame... not much time to work on it so I am going very slow....

So, what kind of wood exactly? Doesn't look like plywood.

I'm liking that a lot Mark. Keep it going.
I'm going to take my old one up to the upholster that did my headliner and see how much he would charge to cover it. That will probably be my biggest decision maker. The old one cost me $200 to cover and $20 in parts! :)

Yes it is plywood but the piece I got was extremely smooth for some reason. It is not heavy at all so Im not worried about the weight. I still have to trim and adjust some things on the frame and then I will make the top pieces. I may recess the top pieces on the top curve and am thinking about putting a pull out cup holder where the armrest is and using the inside part that the cupholder takes up space as a smaller space for sunglasses, hidden switches etc.. while using the rest of the armrest as storage.. I dont know if you can picture that but I have it figured out in my head...sorta....lol

So here is a little bit more.. I actually took a industrial blue plastic barrel from work and the curve was close enough to heat it with a gun and mold it right into place. It will be covered and not blue but wanted to piece it all together. Also did some art work on the cover but the plan is to buy this piece on line and countersink it into the upholstery work. Its unique to me so I will make a second cover piece covered in the same material just in case I ever sell the car some day and the new owner doesnt like the cover... potatoe potato......
