      1968 Volvo project Pure Volvocity

The engine compartment is starting to come together now. The car had so me pretty substantial front end damage when I purchased it. The passenger front fender had been hit pretty hard and was pushed over about 1/2”. That was straightened out but unfortunately when the new suspension went back on the metal went back to the pre-repaired position.

It is now back where it should be. The radiator support which also functions as the good hinge mount is boxed in. We still have some holes to clean up but it is coming along.

The inner fenders are almost done. I asked the shop to uses some 1/4” round to put around the newly fabricated metal around the upper control arm opening.

The modification to the firewall are done. I fabricated a panel for the II Much bulkhead connector to mount. The next step it to start filling in holes in the floor from all the suspension modifications.

A little more progress on the kick panels and splash shields. We opened up the kick panels so that I could mount my ECU on the passenger side in it. The drivers side will have my fuse box.. the splash shields are roughed in but will receive some bead rolling and rubber seals . The hole in the floor is filled but I forgot to snap a photo of it. It should work out well.

I love the idea of mounting boxes in the kick panel. There is so much room behind the splash shields. I think I'll have to steal that idea from you

I am glad the posts are helping you with some ideas. The dash on these cars is so shallow it it hard to find room to mount electronics without them looking terrible. This was the only way I could think of to add more space. I also welded bosses on the inside of the firewall that allow me to up up sheetmetal that I can screw to. The sheetmetal plates bolt up to the bossess. It will allow for a smooth firewall, a way to hold the insulation up, a way to run wires against the firewall and a place to screw electrical items on for mounting.

Here are the bosses I used to do that.

I like the weldable boss idea.

I had the same concern about space under the dash. I plan on adding a small ac/heat unit under there too. I made my firewall flush, eliminating the battery box. I'll move the battery to the trunk.

A bit more progress on closing in holes on the car. The drivers side kick panel is complete. The area behind the back seat is done as well as pockets for the seat belt reels to fit in. The hole in the trunk is filled. One hole to fill in the passenger rear seat area and then some seat belt anchors to install. Just about ready to fling some mud and primer!

The door gaps and window mod preparation is looking pretty good. The gaps are set and the door metal modifications are just about done. I have a couple door glass tracks on the way so the we can fit in the one piece glass. No more vent windows.

The process of cleaning up the engine bay continues. The latch cover is 3 pieces and easily removable. The holes for the latch to engage will be closed off inside so you will only see a small pocket.

Thanks guys. I am tired of metal fab and am ready for it to start the next phase. The other side of the hood latch cover is done and looks really nice. We still need to mount the hood bumpers but that is pretty easy. My body guy signed the car for me.

I also switched to a Lokar hood prop. It allows the hood to have multiple positions open. It will look pretty cool and functional. Just crack it open between runs at the track to let heat escape or to give just a peek at the engine while at a show.

The last bit of metal work is to make a cold air intake that will pull air from the scoop directly into the throttle body. The final piece is mounting a tow hook to the front frame rail.

The front tow hook is now on the car. We had to add a small extension to the front of the frame rail and trim a piece of the grill. You really can’t see the grill modification unless you are really low.

We have also done some reinforcement to the hood. These cars have a huge amount of flex in the hood and now that is gone. No pictures of that, but I will show some later as the cold air intake is fabricated.

Here are the final pictures of some reinforcements we had to do to the hood. There is a tremendous amount of flea in the hood of these cars. The hood hinges get a little stiff and end up ripping the metal near by. We added quite a bit of metal to the area and extended the bracing. The end result is great. It is much stronger and can be placed in any position and doesn’t flex.

We also have the hood bumper installed. It turned out looking pretty nice. The covers by the cowl really clean up the look of the car.

The air intake work has started and has turned out to be much more complex than we planned it would be. In order to get enough filter space we had to strip up to panel filters. We just couldn’t get enough surface area with a cone filter with the space we had.

The filter setup is about 1/2 done now. This is the lower section that will hold the elements. The top portion will hold the elements down, be appealing to the eye and allow cold air to come in from the scoop. Here are a couple pictures of where we are now.

Thanks. I have a little OCD issue I think. LOL!

I am having Greening Auto Company help me out with a little engine jewelry now. I will post some pictures of that when it comes in from them. That will require a little 3D printing and chroming though.
