      69 GTO Build

      Its been a few months since I posted on the forum. Have been busy on the weekends chopping away the bad metal on the GTO and slowly getting new parts welded on. Would normally be more productive, but a broken back from a motocross crash this time last year has slowed me down. I hope to build the GTO to be competitive in Autocross and replace the thrills of Motocross, should be a bit safer with a full cage welded (or bolted) any tips would be appreciated since all the rule books are confusing with a full frame car. Will be using solid body mounts. Oh and it has a fully boxed convertible frame so it should be fairly stiff but adding the cage will help.
      So far I have replaced the upper cowl, fit the left quarter and split the new wheel house in half. Going with a 3" mini tub and coilovers with Fab 9 rear end. Again any tips there?

      Near future, 2005 LQ9 that I plan to go through and then I need to order a T56 Magnum.
      Who has the best LS conversion mounts? I guess I need to position the engine first to figure out how far back I can get it.

      Good deal bud, Im gonna keep an eye on this one. It sucks cause I wanna work on mine soo bad. As far as the engine mounts I would have given you a set of the ones I made and wound up not using. You can see them on my build page just look up VOODOO CHILD. If you are still looking when I get back ill dig em out and send em to you. Otherwise look into BRP, they have good stuff but its kinda pricey.

      T Raven, I wish I still had my 69 Custom S (wana be GTO) I had as a first car in High School, it was ugly black primer but today it would be called rat rod black.
      I bought this GTO i am finally getting around to right out of High School around 26 years ago, time flies!

      SShep71, Looks like we are thinking alike on a bunch of things suspension wise with Watts link etc. Good work on those mounts and boxing the frame, love the rendering. Its too bad about the problems with the hobby shop facilities closing. My Dad used to work on his cars in the Air Force base garages in the 50's (B-47 pilot with lots of fun stories). If they kick you out I will clear out a spot for ya! It sucks not having a spot to work, I finally am able to enjoy my garage that took me 20 years to get. Used to work outside but its not fun in New England. Thanks for the info on the mounts I will check them out, I need to save time where ever I can since I dont get much build time per week. I still put my kids first and my 11 yr old daughter doesnt help me out there in the garage much.
      Although tonight she helped me get the LQ9 out of the truck! Its a start right?

      You guys be careful over there, us GTO guys have to stick together!

      Got the firewall panel fit and ready to weld.
      Cleaned up the LQ9, right side header bolts not so good, snapped one but it was ready to fall off and the front and back ones were gone when I got it.
      After a day of fitting yesterday the drivers side quarter was ready to weld on. Used the SEM panel adhesive on the lower half, that 90 minute work time goes by fast when you work alone!

      since when did abc start making a mini tub kit for the 68-72 a bodies?

      Or does their 64-67 fit?

      Yeah they just started to make one for the 68-72. The website doesnt show it but if you look on their Facebook page they have mentioned it, he says they are in stock and ready to ship.

      Figure I better get an update in before the end of the world today.
      Placed an order for the roll cage and bent 2x3 frame rails, got the DOM 1 3/4 tubing.

      Thinking about setting the engine back more, cutting the firewall (adding lots more work)
      Trying to get all the quarter work done first, got the passenger side off.
      Need to research flush glass how to's, new window / trunk pan is next, planning on sliding it up to get rid of factory molding.
      Oh and if the world doesnt end today MERRY CHRISTMAS!

      Bought fairly good fenders and a hood from a guy in CT over the weekend, gotta love Craigslist. Will be felling better with the front sheet metal on and lined up so I can match up the gaps before I finish welding the right quarter.
      Been fixing rusted tail panel, package tray and radiator support with good metal from parts cars out back.
      Sorry for all the boring sheet metal updates! I cant wait to be finished with the body so I can move on to more exciting parts of the build.
      Roll bar and rear frame rails showed up from Autoweld. That will be next to play with.

      Haha no she is not that interested yet, I tell her maybe someday she will be driving it though. She says when I get to the interior work she will help more.

      This is my wife's favorite car. I will have to follow this one for sure! Good decision replacing the whole back 1/4s... yuck!

      I do not envy you one bit rust repair just plain sucks it is alot better after sandblasting but it still sucks. looks like you are going to put a cage in it? where did you get the cage and how does it fit? let us know when you get to it.was the firewall piece a bought piece or self fabricated?

      Yeah I wish there was an easy way to do rust repair, it does suck.
      Autoweld in PA made the cage, looks like I need to modify the bends on the a pillar to get a tighter fit.

      Hey SShep are you back home yet?
      Overall I was happy with the fit of the quarters, I only had to cut the top of the sail panel a little bit to help the curve at the top of the back window. They are Dynacorn with the weld through primer.
      Wondering if it is best to strip the primer on the outside so I have the same SPI Epoxy primer base on everything?

      Hey Eric, from the pictures it looks like you installed the quarter panel before the inner fender wells. Is that correct?

      I mini tubbed my 70 GTO by stretching the factory inner wells but I'm not to pleased with the outcome, so I am considering ordering the ABC mini tub kit. The reason I am asking about the quater panel process is because I have both left and right replacements and was wondering if I should install the quarters before the mini tub kit?
