Painted windshield molding

I remember this being discussed a while back. I had just dome mine soI thought I would post my results.
I started by taking the molding and cleaning it with a red Scotch Brite pad. I was speaking with my glass installer and told him of my ideas. I was originally going to powdercoat them. He said that I should paint them. So I did!
I used Duplicolor primer and then used Duplicolor Engine Enamel Semi-gloss black. #1635
I've had nothing but compliments on the look. I have no idea how long it will last. Only time will tell!



I will ahve more pics for you of the front when I get back from Hot August Nights. I was missing a piece from the front so I wsn't able to finish the front molding.

Looks great! Ever think about Plasti Diping them? Been thinking about that for mine, if I dont like apparently its can be removed easily.

that engine enamel is tough stuff and in the semi gloss, is suoer easy to lay down out of a can. i have painted wheels black with it and it never even chipped on a wheel!

That does look great. I am glad you posted these pictures. I just sent out all of my chrome from my 66 Chevelle to get gloss black powder a few days ago and this makes me feel good about that decision.

Looks good! I powdercoated mine as well and it was great for years...until it spent a winter outside under a car cover. I went flat black, but it looks like a semi or gloss would be better.

As promised here are some more pics. She is dirty!! And for those that don't know, she was painted in my dirty two car garage! There's still some work to do to her. I still have to sand her and lay the stripe!

Thanks for all the compliments guys. The guy that installed my glass recommended the paint over the powdercoat. Some thing about being too brittle? I don't know? I didn't have time to have them powdered, so I went with the paint. I'm happy with it.

I'll probably do a test sample on something to see if I want to use it on the 83' el camaro. I'm also thinkin about using some type of filler on my front & rear window trim to flatten out the factory profile & make the trim less noticeable. Not sure if I'd be better off with a harder type filler of something like evercoats polyester filler for plastic bumpers?

You ever use "ALL Metal"? I use it when I powder coat and need to cover some stuff up

Been through several cans of USC all metal before on stuff, That's what I meant actually by a harder type filler. I think the trim that came on the 83' el camino is anodized aluminum, my aluminum bedcover which I learned to weld aluminum on has the all metal filler in the worst areas as a base filler. So it should be good on properly scuffed window trim.
Was thinkin before about spraying my window trim the gloss black body color, but after seeing this thread I think the semi-gloss black may look better than trying to paint it body color. And if I can get a good result from a spray can, the window trim project doesn't have to turn into a special occasion to get it done. I think making my trim more flat like the camaro's will make it less noticeable than the factory profiled look.

any updates?? i under up powdercoating the pot metal trim around my tailights. i did satin and came out pretty good. would be alot easier to paint because of filler where when you powdercoat it is best to get a smooth finish with metal work.

Paul, I had my bezels powdercoated black at an 80% sheen. They came out nice. I didn't do anythig to them as far as the pitting.

Those look great. I ended up doing the grill and bezels. Now it is time to finish powder coating the rest of the parts.
