      Project: Ballin' on a budget

      I've never made a "project" thread really and stuck with it so here it goes. The plan is to start in the back and work forward upgrading and restoring at the same time.

      My friends, family and neighbors all think I'm crazy for cutting up such a "nice" car. Well, it looks good from the top but underneath everything hides a horribly repaired monster.

      My dad and I put new sheet metal and paint on it about 12 years ago and I threw some nice wheels on it and got it setting there, but I've never been 100% satisfied.

      First up: Mini tubs, 315's 8.8 Explorer swap and trunk restoration.

      Before:




      Started scraping off coatings and uncovering hell. I had a roll bar in the car at one time.



      275's in the stock wheel wells..... not big enough!

      It still doesn't fit perfect so time now to back half the frame and that's where I'm at now.

      No that's out of the budget. I had fairly new 4-1/2 leaf reverse eye leafs on it with the Global West Del-A-Lum bushing in them, I'll reuse those.

      No, I plan to make it so that I can put the family in it safely and cruise it in style. The roll bar was IN THE WAY big time.

      Looks Great! Very nice update to the car!

      Just a tip: I'm about to run 315's on the rear of my chevelle, I've had a few mock up tires to reference and found that the size difference, between brands, for 315's are very inconsistant... If you need a "smaller" 315, look at Nitto 555's or Nitto in general, they run narrower than most tires, but will still fill up the wheel wells...

      Oh I'm all to familiar with the size variances. On my dads Camaro the wheels came with Dunlops, fit great. He put Pirellies on it and they rubbed all the time. I'm not sure how these compare but if they are on the wide side that plays in my benifit as that's what I'm making room for.

      The Terms are just mock up and really not needed. The grill is just the stock 66 grill painted black, nothing fancy.

      I will be using 2nd Camaro spring pockets with a notched frame and standard hangers out back.

      I spent Friday night on my back with a scraper in hand taking off undercoating. Today the back section took a bath of Goo Gone and Mineral spirits to get to here. It was really slimy and gooey under here. I have since sprayed it with some rust converter.

      to be correct, i think thats actually "fools gold". lol! i feel for you brother, i'm starting the "bottom scraping" tomorrow on mine. already did the engine compatment/aprons up front, but decided to go ahead & pull the rear & do the underneath before i run the new brake/fuel lines.

      Hmm..this looks familiar!... I was able to get 315 30 18s tucked with a mini tub..trimmed frame rails..springs relocated and 1/4s trimmed.... I'm building a 68 fastback now...its getting 20x10s in back.. : )

      I'm going to make 2x3 frame rails right after the "s" bend in the rear frame.

      I was thinking about making full length subframe connectors out of some 2x3. Would this be overkill and add weight? I've had one guy try telling me to just weld tabs from my existing connectors to the floor. That just doesn't seem as effective.

      The 2x3 will be overkill and add weight, that is why for mine I sized them down to a thick walled 1x2. Youhave to remember that you will still have all of the body structure (although it is not hugely rigid) along with the floor pans adding strength. Unless you plan to run 800+ hp the current subframe connectors weled to the floors and to the front and rear rails should be sufficient.
