275/45/17 on back of 80 Malibu?

I have new wheels for my 1980 Malibu. I know my front setup. I was going to run 255/50/17 on the rear, on 17" x 8" 4.25" bs wheels because I know they fit on a stock width axle & no other mods. Anyone know if I can run 275/45/17 in the same application?

I don't know if you can put them on an 8" wide wheel, seems a little narrow. I have them on a 9.5" wide wheel in the back of an 86 Monte SS.

They will mount ok but the problem is the sidewall will have pronounced bulge.

Duh. I never even considered minimum rim width for a 275...

on the 2 cars we are building we are using 9.5" width rear wheels with a 275/40r17 tire. I dont believe that a 275/45r17 is being made by anyone.

Yeah, I'm finding that out. I'm most likely going with the original idea of 255/50. A 275/40 is too short for my application. I want a 27" tire.

      Thanks anyway!
