They're out there... but some of us have yet to be done enough to make our presence known. I've been working on mine since before fancy tubular suspension and rack&pinion was even a consideration, or even a viable possibility. Mine is still rocking PST bushings, Global West negative wedge kit, Addco sway bars, etc. In the meantime it awaits my time to finish it:

I do think the Camaro is a little easier to modify though, with the bolt in subframe. So the suspension manufactures have produced some really cool stuff them, and people have just bought it up.

Yes Ron, your car is probably my favorite first gen Mustang It looks so damn nice sitting still and knowing that you saved a rusted out shell and what you accomplished with $5K and LOTS of talent was amazing. Since then you have only improved it.

Its funny, since I've started researching mustangs I've seen your car everywhere! Ive tried to find out info on LS motors into 65-66 stangs and so many of those threads devolve into Ford purists frothing at the mouth but then someone posts your car and everyone ooo's and ahhhs ha ha.

The corner carving demographic of Mustang owners were more likely to turn to pre-existing events to run their cars. The track element of pro-touring is then not as impressive to Mustang owners who are into that sort of thing.

Obviously, there are a ton of exceptions that are not described by that and both the Camaro and Mustang have been road raced since they first came out.

Here's a picture from the first real NASA trackday I attended back in '09. Even with the Camaros in AI, CMC, and CMC2, the Camaros at the event could be counted on one hand. Mustangs on the other hand were very well represented, though there were no early examples signed up to run. How does running newer Mustangs relate to fewer PT-ed older Mustangs? Well another theory, a Mustang owner might have a dedicated track car and an old Mustang just to cruise around in. I'm not sure how many people that really applies to though.

      Photo snipped

I must ask the question, why are there not more Camaros at ordinary track events? Thankfully, the good members of this site do their part to correct that, but it is odd to me that more Camaros (of any vintage) aren't raced.
You know Bret, I think your theory has a lot of merit. Since lurking around a few different Ford websites I've noticed there is a whole heck of a lot more posting about Track days and vintage racing than you ever see on this site. I think the hardcore Mustang track guys have probably been doing their thing long before Pro-Touring got momentum and are too busy racing to notice lol.

This is more hardcore than most guys on this site are with respect to track days, but wow this Mustang is awesome!!! Its apparently on oldschool vintage bias ply race tires too. Too bad the video cut off when it did and didn't last about 5 more seconds

It's coming in this next week to install AFD 4V heads and AFD intake. I am trying to talk my customer into taking it down to the new RRTC event that gonna be in August.
I like the stance on that one.
Yeah I kind of agree, when I went on the mustang cruise, this past summer, there was only me (as a vintage car) on the tour. I felt kind of like the ugly kid sister, becuase I was only in primer and guide coat, but it was a great shake down, for the 'beast. I'm not sure why there is not more touring 'stangs. When I built mine, it was made to be driven, and built to be reliable. So far so good, (since the bearing failure) but the fun, is always tinkering and messing with cars anyway. ;) If you're not breaking something, than you haven't really been having fun!

She's got a lot of good track stuff on her, but was really built as a highway cruiser. A little refined, but otherwise pretty much as evil as she looks ;)

I think it is just the ease and cost to build a 1st gen Camaro or even most any Chevy product for that matter. Vs. Everything else. pure and simple economics. I like a challenge that is why I have a Buick.

That is what I used to think too. Then I bought a Mustang. A complete set of wheel houses, quarter skins, and fenders cost around $550. Restoration parts for Mustangs seem very affordable, and I think that might account for why there are so many relatively stock looking ones at local car shows. "pro-touring" parts and mod motors are a very different story though, and I think I will soon be discovering if they are a lot more expensive. Also remember, Ford doesn't really have another hugely popular nameplate like GM, so there are probably more Mustangs being built and maintained than Camaros, and maybe the volume accounts for the lower cost of parts. I also wonder if it is because the basic little Mustang is so easy to put together, and relatively affordable to do so, that accounts for why there are both so many in general, and comparatively few done to what we would consider a high level. There are probably a lot more people that can afford to build a Mustang than a Camaro, Chevelle, 'Vette, etc.

It wasn't until after I bought my '66 that I realized how many Mustang builds there actually seem to be on here, there are quite a few, and I have feeling there will be even more in the coming months and years.

lastly, I wonder what would have happened if Mark Steilow had gotten a job for Ford instead of GM...

I am about to start on a 70 Pro-Tour Mustang.. It has kept me up late @ nites reseaching & coming out new ideas! I promise it will a very something very unique .. Got Ben hermance working on the rendering.. Got the 2011 Coyote Cobra drivetrain coming.. Ordered all DSE suspension components front & rear.. which they don't have yet but will use existing parts to come up with something cool.. some stretching & carbon fiber parts are being discussed.. & much more!!

I am very excited about this build because for a change it will not be a Camaro! Maybe some cool new billet pcs.. Maybe!

      Transporter picking it up Monday..

I'm working on one.... my 67 Fastback !!

I've had the car since I was 11 (now 24) It's my life...everything I do is revolved around my car lol

I was fortunate to have the car featured in bone stock form in Mustang and Fords in Nov 2004 and again in semi-pro touring form in Car Craft this past September. I am now in the process of completely re-doing the car in a one-off true pro touring theme, that I hope to take to Sema when completed.

Some highlights of the build are:

Rouscharged Coyote 5L (not out yet - hopefully by summer this year) at 7lbs of boost will make 600hp
Custom Roadster Shop IFS front end utilizing Corvette C6 Front suspension, shockwaves airbags and rack and pinion steering (working with Phil at Roadster shop on this as we speak)
      ridetech 4 Link Rear Suspension
ridetech Ridepro and e3 air management system utilizing internal ride height sensors
      Mini Tubbed
      Custom Dutchman Narrowed rear end
      Rushforth Wildside 18x8`s and 18x10`s with 245 and 295 BF KDW`s
Baer Brakes Pro Plus 14" 6 Piston brakes on all four corners
Tremec TKO 600 5 speed or T56 Magnum (currently have a tko600 for the car)
      Rick's Stainless steel fuel Tank
Custom one-off interior featuring handbuilt dash and Apple Ipad to run all audio/video/interior switches ie power windows etc
      BMW Heated Power Seats
      Focal Sound System
Ring Brothers Front Reactor Valance and Bumper
Flush mounted front and rear glass

It's quite an undertaking so I'm not really putting a timeline on it. When it's done, it's done... I'll be sure to post pics as I progress, but progress has been slow lately... hopefully by the summer I'll have the roadster shop front clip on it and maybe have the motor on order..

I bug Kyle about this every time I see him. Two weeks ago when I asked how things were coming along he said they were in the process of developing everything on the computer. As far as I know, they are currently only working on parts for early Mustangs, not Fox stuff. Kyle has also made sure to note that the Mustang stuff is being done first and foremost for a customer, and nothing is set in stone as to when these products might ever make it to the market. I would, however, keep an eye out for an announcement of some kind around the end of the year, or beginning of the next.
