Pics of Stage 1 project car

As I bought the #s matching '70 GS Stage 1 car & parts:

Previous owner rolled the car off the trailer, and into a tree...

      Running 455:

Those pictures look very familiar, did you post them on V8 as well? As i recall, you got a pretty good deal and A LOT of extra parts.

One of my first muscle car loves, '70-'72 Buick GS and GSX's. Can't wait to see what you do with it!

Yes, the pics are on V8..., too.

I already had A LOT of extra parts, since I've collected these cars for 25 years; I just got A LOT MORE with it, for nothing extra, since the previous owner had no interest in/knowledge of Buicks, and didn't know where to start looking for parts to build/restore it.

First, I'll be disassembling the interior, to prepare for the body shell repair (roof/quarter panels/rear deck), to make it solid enough before it gets lifted from the frame, for a proper frame-off cleanup (not restoration, since I'm not bringing it back to factory original condition, but modern/improved, instead).

I'd like it to end up like this, with more of a Mad Max appearance (Trans Am fender vents; widened 1/4 panels/ground effects; custom exhaust through bumper; airplane cockpit interior/etc.):
      http://www.buickperformance.com/GSXPrototype.html

Open to most suggestions for MODERN brakes/wheels/suspension/interior/etc.; photoshop renderings welcome for inspirational concept ideas, as I prepare to get the car back on the road, to attend some shows & events, just for fun!

      Thanks for interest, guys!

i had a buddy in high school with a 71 GS350. i loved that car. it was yellow.

ive alswys wanted to take a GS of that era, strip all the parts, and stuff them in an elcamino of that era.

im looking forward to watching this.

I have lot of interest in this; I'm in the first stages of heavily modifying a 67 vert....... not sure if a Stage One car should be used, but hey it's your ride!

Hey Mike I just saw your post. Over on the V8Buick board there is someone who did just that! The result was one really cool looking ride. I'll get some pics posted.

Try this link, instead; click ENTER; scroll down page to White GSX, and click on "GSX Prototype Pics":
      http://www.buickperformance.com

Also check out the G-Rex (Skylark/GSX clone, with Chevy LS2... Eww!):
      http://www.diecastmusclecars.com/ls1gsx.htm

How do you think it's any different for you to "heavily modify a '67 vert", than it is for me to try to resurrect a nearly unrestoreable Stage 1 car?

If you had a choice, which would you prefer:
      A) Seeing the Stage 1 restored, BETTER than factory original, to be recognized/appreciated/used to motivate/encourage others to find/start/continue their own projects!

      B) Seeing the Stage 1 sold piece by piece, for highest price offers, to those who only want to resell them for a bigger profit, with no chance for those who actually need the parts to use on their project cars!
(No chance of that happening, as my other Buick buddies end up with parts before anyone else knows they were even available!)

      C) Not seeing the Stage 1, anymore, just wondering "what ever happened to that car", as the car gets lost in the dark garage, buried underneath 25 years worth of other Buick parts, not to be seen or heard about for years, as the Legend of the Lost Buick!

      D) Restoring the Stage 1 to factory original condition is NOT an option, as you see every other Skylark turned into more GSX's than Buick ever produced!!
In the meantime, I'll continue acquiring parts for the resto-mod Stage 1!

So, how do you like the White Prototype GSX, otherwise?
Front spoiler, custom fiberglass hood, 3 piece Rear Spoiler, psychedelic interior...
Can you picture Corbeau seats in those colors? Could be interesting.
      Wait & see...

I concur, If it is not a restorable car then being a Stage does not have any influence on what is done to it.

      I hope you understand, I said what I said, in jest/humor. : )

The car is not unrestoreable, only unaffordable to have a Professional shop charge for parts & labor! I already have most of the parts, and I'm even capable & confident that I can do the labor, except I'd like to get the car done a little sooner, which won't happen if I have to learn as I go. Not saying I'm not willing to try, just yet, though.

So far, I've had 3 shops not interested in the restoration, as they prefer Insurance Damage Claims, instead.

I have 4 garages with space & tools to do the work, myself, including a single car garage/paintbooth, so I may have to utilize the resources I have available to me, and just do it, myself, anyway, both to save cost, and to make sure it's done correctly, the way that I want it done, not how I tell a bodyshop (that I'm paying!) to do it, then not be satisfied with it, after!
I've been down that road before, prefer not to do it, again!

Anything I do to the car will not be irreversible, and can be taken back to original condition, if necessary, but I think most will appreciate it after they see it completed, especially ME!

Are you going to stick with the brown interior or go with the black? I have a nice brown sport wheel for sale on V8 that would look alot better than the standard wheel if you use the brown interior. Yeah, I know, it's a shameless plug, but hey, somebody needs to put this wheel to good use! Later, Randy

Update: stripped to body shell & frame, sending to CPC (Complete Powder Coating, Joliet, IL) for sandblasting/powdercoating/hydrographics, and sheetmetal replacement.

Plans for the car (narrowing down choices, but making progress):
Silver powdercoated frame, UMI Black lower control arms/UMI Red upper control arms/UMI Black front sway bar & HD sway bar mounts, 2" drop springs/spindles/Bilstein shocks, 4w disc brakes w/Hydraboost, Forgeline 18x10 rears; 17x7 fronts...

455 Stage 1 engine (mild 450+ hp, mostly street cruiser), Edelbrock B4B intake, TA Performance headers, Magnaflow 3" stainless exhaust (custom through bumper design); TCI 4L80E auto trans (comparable to TH400, for better performance & increased fuel economy) with paddle shifter; Flaming River Black tilt floor shift column with MOMO wheel...

Interior: Lamborghini/aircraft style 2 seat design (rear seat enclosed for stereo system/storage/etc.); full length console from dash; factory gauges replaced with aircraft style gauges; My own original idea: dash customized with hinged hood panel over gauges (hood up= covered gauges for daytime use, to reduce glare while viewing gauges; hood forward= gauges hidden from driver, for night driving, as gauges are reflected onto underneath dash panel surface, and reflected again onto windshield as HUD); Front & Rear mounted cameras with indash monitors (rearview mirror omitted for no windshield obstruction); Indash GPS navigation...

Body: Gray Pearl Metallic, with Carbon Fiber GSX Stripes on Hood/Fenders/Doors/Rear Spoiler, accented with Red pinstripe.
LED 3rd brakelight built in to (aftermarket) GSX rear spoiler.
Digi-Tails LED sequential taillights, and all front (bumper) & side (fender & 1/4) marker lights.
Custom ram air hood, with raised/extended scoops.
      Custom widebody/ground effects kit.

Your plans look good. Just a suggestion. I f you want to do staggered wheels, I would suggest 18's and 19's. These cars have big wheelwells, or 18's all around. I can send pics of my 70 GSX build if you'd like. 245-40ZR18 fronts and 295-35ZR19 rears. You'll like it!

I wasn't exactly sure how big of wheels/tires I could go, to fill the wheelwells, but that sounds great, I appreciate the suggestion, and would LOVE to see pics of your car!

Instead of Red pinstripe to accent the main stripes, what about a "barbed wire" pattern (vinyl decals or custom paint), or something else different/unique? Ideas/suggestions?

      nice to see progress again.

and you should think about going back brown. only use the new VW rootbeer looking color with a white tiop and interior.

I originally thought mine would look something like this (no Brown, no Chrome, all custom interior), as Mild2Wild (Tim) evidently had the same idea:
