What do you know about overdrives!!!!

What can anybody tell me about overdrives. I'm puttin a pretty healthy 454 in my 62 chevy II and was going to run a 400 turbo but decided I was tired of drivin 65 MPH every where I go. So the question is whats better 700r4 or 200r4? Whats the biggest stall I can get in a lock up? I have a pretty good size cam, so I think a 2500 stall would be the least I could run, I was wanting 2800-3200 but somebody told me they dont have those in a lock up. I plan on racing the car now and then so I want something strong. The cars got 9" ford with 3.55 gears and probably gonna have a 26"-28" tire.

Heres some pics of the Chevy II so far....

      Ever heard of Gear Vendors?

You can run a T400 with a stout Big Block and then split each gear, thereby making it a 6speed auto.
      Check them out:

You may want to check out ShayC5's 69 Camaro:

It is running a Pro-Charged Big Block and T400/GV overdrive unit.

      I'm sorry

Hey I was wondering what that overdrive really does. When you say it splits each gear does that mean it's just adding a gear in between gears and after the last real gear? (Most Likely) Or is it adding 3 gears after the 3 already in a TH350 or 400? (Unlikely)

What does it translate to MPH and RPM? Someone sent me a link to a tranny calculator before where you fill in the max rpm, rear gear, and the gears of your tranny and it told you the MPH and the RPM it took to be there. So with a last gear of 1.00 on a TH350 and that overdrive, how much improvement would you see if the prior setup without the overdrive unit was about 4,000 RPM @ 70 MPH?

Also would it be cheaper to get a stout 700R4 or 200R4 than an overdrive unit from Gearvendors? ...going on a ~400ft/lbs car?

From what I've checked so far it would be cheaper to go with the 200 or 700, plus clearances could be an issue also with gear vendors unit.

I have a 500+ ftlb Chevy II and I plan on thrashin' on her now and then....you got to, thats what it's for!!....The gear vendor unit is by far the strongest but the most $$$ from what I've seen.

The 700 would be the way to go on the big block but I would have to agree with the poster that put up gear vendors. I have played with all of them and even a well built 700 will have issues with a high horsepower engine. But a 400 with a gear vendors unit is near bullet proof.

I've even heard of guys using a tranny brake with a TH400 and the Gear Vendors overdrive! Wouldn't that be fun on the street?

If there is a hard way to do something, I'll find it!
