      New guy 1968 Charger

      Hey Everyone,
I have a 1968 Dodge Charger body grafted onto a 2007 SRT8 Magnum chassis. The car was built by myself and a few friends in the driveway and other than some small issues has been trouble free for a few thousand miles. The car was taken apart and painted last month then reassembled and driven 250 miles to the SEMA show in vegas.
I do realize the car doesn't really fit the PT definition. It is really a 2007 SRT8 with 1 substantial body mod but it has proven to be a great driver.

Thanks. The Dart was supposed to be a Charger but my budget didn't allow for a Charger; I settled for a "mini" Charger but am real glad I did. Yours is great though! Executed perfectly.

Hey John - great build, just looked at your website. Can you give me an idea about some of the challenges in your build? A popular topic here is grafting a C6 on underneath classic iron. The issues there are fab, fab, fab starting w the rack, ride height, engine placement, track width and wheelbase. Any light you can shed on these topics in the Mopar world? Who knows, Viper chassis may be the next big thing!

I measured several cars before cutting anything. The magnum had a 5" longer wheelbase so I took 2.5" out of the '07 pan just in front of the rear seat and then moved the front wheel well openings forward 2.5" to adjust for the difference. The rocker width is nearly the same and the front frame rails are the exact same width. The only other real issues are blending the firewall to the cowl and the rear inner wheelhouse. The wiper motor on the LX is under the hood and had to be relocated to behind the gauges. A custom air box had to be made for the ac along with a custom dash. I used the latches and power windows from the LX as well. The engine compartment is 4" wider on the LX so the relay module, pcm and power steering reservoir had to be moved in a little. The front structure that goes under the front fenders and carries the strut loads had to be trimmed a little. The LX radiator is mounted in front of the core support and the grill mounting structure was modified to carry the intercooler for the supercharger.

After that it is all just making patterns and fabbing fill panels. I have a hundred photos from the build and I am getting a build book together. That should make it easier for the next poor soul. Where are you in SoCal? You can come see it in person.

It is basically a supercharged 2007 SRT8 Magnum and drives as such. On the freeway at speed you get the wind noise from the '68 vent windows and drip rails but other than that it is rock solid. I have a few thousand miles on it since we made it run and I love the car. My wife has a 2007 SRT8 300 and I have driven both pretty hard. The smaller wheels and better tires on the SRT-68 makes the car feel more "nimble" and it stops better as well. I will need to get more offset on the front wheels because in hard cornering with bumps I have had some tire rub. You have to push it pretty hard and the rub is minor, but it bugs me. Where are you located? If you are nearby SoCal you are welcome to take it for a spin. You wreck it you buy it.
