      Dumps or Tail Pipes?

I'm planning to redo the exhaust system on my '72 Monte from the headers to the exit, and I'm looking for opinions/experiences with dumps before the rear end and tail pipes. I'm currently running 1-5/8 Hooker Comps feeding into a 2-1/2" system (non-mandrel bends) with an H-pipe and Flowmaster 40s that dump before the rear end. I think it sounds good now (I know, I know, lots of you guys don't like Flowmaster and I can understand why), but the headers suck when it comes to spark plug clearance. I'm looking to try the Dynatech Musclemaxx stepped header design to get the benefits of a slightly larger primary, plus they seem to be a quality product. I can only hope that they help on the spark plug issue.

Since my existing system will have to be modified to match the collector position, I'm looking to do a complete overhaul. I plan to ditch the H-pipe in favor of an X-pipe and replace the mufflers with something else. I'm also looking forward to mandrel bent tubing. My question to the masses is do I go with tail pipes this time, or do I stick with the dumps? How much of an effect will tail pipes have on the sound? Are dumps considered to be bush league when compared to a complete system?

My local rear end shop who also runs the salt flats says my exhaust dumps are cooking the fluid in my rear.

That's interesting.. how close are they to the diff? Got a pic? I love dumps that sounds like a not very good scenario.

I personally would never own a car without tailpipes. The resonance & fumes will make you sick... and annoy the crap out of you. Unless its primarily a race car, I'd run tailpipes. Just my experience. Scott

If it is for the street you may not be able to dump.

Thanks for the replys everyone. Fumes haven't been an issue to date, but it's not like I drive the car on a routine basis. The same goes for interior resonance. I just don't drive it enough for it to bother me, but I am factoring both of these into my decision. Now, the gear oil temperature issue is an interesting one. I hadn't given that any thought before, but that alone may be reason to go with tail pipes.

When I was young I loved the dumps. I smelled the exhaust all the time, the interior was loud, and I had to shut off the engine to order my double double. Now I love the tail pipes, no exhaust smells inside the car, and I can hear myself think.

      I vote for tail pipes.

Dumps can also warm up the fuel tank as well. Not good in hot weather, could lead to vapor lock or other issues.

I always here the pro-tailpipe guys say the gas fumes are so bad with dumps... I have not experienced this. In fact, I don't smell gas inside the car, but maybe my nose is shot along with my hearing.

It seems if you are under a certain age, it's about dumps. Once you get older, you go tailpipes.

So... how old are you? LOL

I have dumps and don't have the fumes, resonance, or any problems from rear end or tank heating. Sometimes tailpipes don't fit.

My 95 DD mustang has dumps. Its loud and I like it. My 65 falcon has dumps they point to the front of the tire contact patch. Its louder.....I like it. It kicks up dust and blows it out the side towards other cars. I have not had an issue with heat. I was worried about it so I would check after drives.

tailpipes and flowmasters are the only way for me. and there is always a way to fit tailpipes, well almost always. it might be a pain in the ass, but you can make them fit. bad penny has tailpipes and i made tailpipes work on my chevelle. both have watts links which one could argue as the most difficult to get past.

I say dumps if the sound don't bother you. I run dumps without an h or x-pipe. Also I drive my car daily and sometimes drive for 3hrs and I never smell any fumes either.

Dumps to tail pipes is a BIIIIIIG difference.

The tail pipes quiet it down quite a bit. If the dumps dont bother you now (especially with flowmaster 40s) keep the dumps.

I normally add pipes when i want to get rid of resonance.
