      My 2 cents.

      I was going to use electric dumps. I even bought a brand new set. Then I did a bunch more research. I could not find a single reference showing any real performance gain to be had by using dumps/coutouts as opposed to good tail pipes. The exhaust gasses have cooled so much by the time they exit the tail pipes that even the diameter of the pipe is far less critical. I decided to avoid the mess and issues, and am glad I did.

      If it's purely a track car, then dumps are fine. If it's not, then I think it is a little "bush league" but that's just my opinion.

      Tailpipes will make a very large difference in sound -both in terms of volume and overall sound.

      On my car, I have the mufflers right on the headers leading into an X-pipe, then dumps out. Sounds awesome. It was going to be temporary at first, but it grew on me real quick.

      I like tail pipes on Montes.....either run the stainless steel out the back, or turn them out/down just behind the rear tire..
      Yup another that's over 40 who prefers tail pipes.
      1970 RS/SS350 139K on the clock:
      89 TPI motor w/ 1pc rear seal coupled to a Viper T56 via Mcleod's modular bellhousing w/ hydraulic T/O bearing from the Viper, 12 bolt rear w/ 3.73 gearing, SC&C upper control arms, factory lowers with Delalums, C5 brakes at all four corners, Front Wheels 17x8's with Sumi 255/40/17 and Rear Wheels 17x9's with Sumi 275/40/17.

      I hated the dumps when I had them, way too much dust and exhaust fumes in the car,and the resonance along with it. I would go with a nice 3" full system. Allot of great kits from Torque Tech and many others, a 2 1/2 system would work just as good. I love my 3" system to the rear of my el camino, Iam using Spintech 3000 series mufflers.

      Thanks for the compliment. Your El Camino looks real nice. How was the fitment of the Torque Tech setup if you don't mind me asking. If I go with tail pipes, I want them to be tucked up close to the trunk pan and turn down behind the bumper; I don't like straight out look. I've looked into Spin Techs, and I like the design and idea, I'm just not sure how they'd sound. I've never heard them in person, at least not knowingly. Sounds like you like them?

      I have the Monte angle cut tips and it is tucked up under the rear as I could get them,they do have a straight out look to them,but I could probably have them re-fitted for a better look if I wanted, but for me I kind of like the pipes shooting out the back,though they end at the rear bumper. Here is a older picture with how they look out back,those tips are the 3"Monte's angle cut ones. I originally had 40 series Flowmaster's but got tired of the sound, I've had the Spintech's for awhile now,and they sound great,Iam using Hooker Headers part number 2466-1. I wanted a decent shorty header and they fit and look great!

      Another great muffler I found on a budget that really impressed me with its mellow sound are the new Thrush Dynomax #17649 series, I have a good friend who just installed a pair on his 68 Camaro with a Big block 427 big cam,compression,and actually it sounds really good, I mean for a muffler that retails for $30.00 bucks each I was really considering trying these on my El Camino. Check out these Dynomax mufflers and do a search on youtube for some video sound demo's, hey for only a investment of $60.00 you could always change them later if you don't like them, good luck with what you get,and do you have more pictures of that great Monte of yours?

      Last year I had tailpipes. This year with the new coil over 4-link setup, I can't run the tail pipes. I can't believe how LOUD my car is now. Especially inside the car. If your young and foolish, no tailpipes. I want to find a way to get tailpipes to work. I will also be switching from Flowmasters to a turbo muffler setup. No way a straight through muffler is as quiet as a turbo muffler. I will take the 5 to 7 horsepower loss. My ears will be happier. RUN THE TAILPIPES!

      I prefer tailpipes. Dumps create dust, make the car extra loud (especially inside the car), generate heat in the car, and get the underside of your car dirty and splattered with water.

      I vote tailpipes. I'm 28 and still don't like dumps. I have put tailpipes on things that most would say no way. I just cut the sheet metal above the rearend and make room for them. Done. Patch it all back up and know one even notices.

      I've had dumps before and now prefer tailpipes with a slight turn out by the rear quarters.

      Ten years ago when I originally built my Camaro, I made my own dumps before the rearend. The reason I did that was because I wanted to do the exhaust all myself, and didn't have the ability to make my own tailpipes.

      I have a 396 with a pretty aggressive cam, Flowmaster 40's going into a set of Hookers with 3 1/2" collectors, and that stuff goes into my 3" pipes until my dumps.

      Any time I don't drive my car for a while I start to think about adding tails (usually over every winter), thinking that I need a mellower tone. Then I will get in my car and fire it up for the first time, I always say "what the hell was I thinking? these dumps are awesome!" So what if I can't hear my stereo too good because I have no rug or sound deadener on the floor.

      For those that are wondering, my car doesn't just cruise around town either. Every year I take it on trips that top 1,000 miles on the highway and enjoy the hell out of it. Did I mention that is with a geardrive and 3:73s in the rear?



      Oh yeah baby... GO LOUD OR GO HOME!!!
