Depends how far east you are.

I usually go through the mountains to and from Asheville NC way of Franklin NC, and hiawassee GA on 515/575. I can get you road name if you need, I run it by memory, lol.

If you are close to 85, I would say to either take highway the entire way down to 285 and back up 75 to 575 to be the fastest. Or for more scenic, you can head accross 53 by road atlanta, to hyw 369 to hyw 20 to canton. There are a few other routes through the hills, but it's been a long time and there were a few others that had little towns with bad setups if you pulling a trailer.

***EDIT*** He types faster than me! ^^^^ And has some good options too!

I think the general consensus from last year was that all the way down I-85 to I-285 then up I-75 was the best way to go.

You can cut over on Hwy 20 from Buford (exit 120 on I-85), but that's literally an hour PLUS and you're sitting at red-lights and it also gets a little tricky going through the town of Cumming (yes, that's spelled right).

I suggest that you guys just keep trucking and stay on the interstates UNLESS you just happen to be traveling at 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on that Friday afternoon. Then I just might suggest hitting Hwy 20 which will also be busier and probably add 30 minutes to your trip due to surface street traffic.

I live right there at I-85 and Hwy 20 and worked in Canton for 1.5 years so I made that trip often. It's not fun either way, it's just whether you feel like seeing the sites or just getting there.

Hey Jeff, still a "maybe", but thinking hard about it.

I just want to avoid Atlanta if possible, and looking for alt. routes. I'm thinking like Robert says about hwy 53 past RA. Scenic routes are fine, as I won't be in a big hurry. And there will definately not be a trailer involved. Thanks for the suggestions ya'll.

      It's a really nice drive across Hwy 53 ..
      Just come that way ..
It's pretty and relaxing , except in the area where you pass through the city of Gainseville ...
But , it's small town , scenic stuff.
Some red lights , but no serious traffic jams..
