Vented hood?

Can someone school me or link me to information about properly venting the hood on a 99 Camaro?



I can get a hood for free to play with and I would like to fab a vented hood to drop to drop the pressure and keep the front of the car planted at speed. Maybe I am using the wrong word combinations but I haven't really found much useful information online.

I will be doing the work in my garage so it won't be anything too fancy. Just need basic info about placement and sizing.

There is an aerodynamics thread that tels you completely how to test for it and everything you need to know. I will be venting my hood as well. But it needs to run to test it. That and I have yet to find the perfect vents. Also not that keen on cutting into my rare aluminum hood until I can find a spare just incase I screw up.

Yeah, I wouldn't chop up an aluminum hood either. The advantage of having late model junk, you can find about any panel you need for free or damn close.

One option for hood vents is to have louvers punched into flat panels and then graft them to the hood, or check out a marine supply store like West Marine, they sell stainless louvers for venting engine compartments on boats, they look good, too.

Another option is to use a fiberglass hood and find a production vehicle whose scoop/vents you like and have that molded to the glass hood. If the scoop/vents are not 'glass themselves, use a steel hood and weld them in. That's what I'm doing. Took a 'glass Dart hood and am having a viper scoop/vents molded to it.

Awesome to see someone grafting the Viper Louvers into a hood...I am planning on doing this to my 68 some day.

The Viper louvers are hot and they can work with many different scoops, I think.

Yes he is going to pull a mold from it. If I'm not mistaken, he is doing B & E bodies as well, not sure which ones though. If interested, send me a PM and I'll get you his number.

Anyone have sources for a production vent? I know the jeep guys have some, but they are rather crude looking. Ive also seen some local import guys following the the cut outs under the hood(if you open your hood, the pockets that not part of the support layer), then using mesh to fill it in. hmmm

Check out Anvil Auto hood vents. They may make something to fit your car. The ones with the screen vents look especially cool!

Matt, Factory 94-97 Pontiac GTP vents w/drip trays and 91-94 Chevy lumina Z34 vents w/ drip trays are common swaps and look pretty good. VIS Universal scoops.

Tim, Don't know if you knew, but they make CF hoods for the 4th gens. The AMS is a really good deal.

To be truthful it should be tested. Check out the links I posted in post #3. It is possible you can make things worse with an ill placed vent.

Indeed, I highly doubt the fenders are ever tested for aerodynamics. Their all just copy and paste designs of existing aftermarket import fenders or Lorinser fenders. Mainly posted the vents due to speculative weight savings for the track/strip camaro and the "looks cool" factor

We've run the 90's Pontiac GP vents on our hood for 14 years now and they work excellent. I used a Dremel sanding drum to remove the casting flash in the openings and open them up for more flow, but you can't really tell from the outside.

Here are some pictures of the top and underside of our GP vents:




You can literaly see the heat coming out of them. We run a ZZ502 and have covered over the top grill opening for aerodynamics, but the motor stays @ 160 under the worst conditions and there is zero rise of the car nose at speed.

For location on the hood, you want the place with the highest velocity air flowing over it and the largest plenum of air under it. Air slows down at the center of the hood as you go towards the windshield, but has to speed up to break over the fenders or around the sides of the windshield... so middle, forward of the motor is good, as is the sides of the motor as you go back. A vent right above a shock tower, AC box or inner fender won't be as effective as one above the headers where there is less resistance to air movement under the hood.

The articals in the links were great for forward airscoop stuff. Im thinking Ive seen alot of GT cars with vents in the fender sides, plus some had the radiator vented on its own. I believe that was the chevys L88 original hood design.

and this is how I did mine. my SN95 has a 5.4 out of a GT500 complete with the supercharger and all. the engine bay is almost too small for this engine and has created a high pressure spot behind the radiator and in front of the motor. only ran hot with the hood on! now with the vents in place it runs cool and clean. I added gurney flaps to the leading edges of the openings to create even more low pressure at the vents.
